A review on LiNixCo1−2xMnxO2 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.33) cathode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries

Abstract Electrochemical and physical properties of LiNixCo1−2xMnxO2 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.33) electrode materials prepared by self-combustion were investigated. Pure LiNixCo1−2xMnxO2 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.33) materials with single phase and R-3 m layered structure were obtained as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy are commonly used to determine the chemical composition and the distribution of particle size of the three samples. The electrochemical performances of the samples were measured at different current rates in the 3–4.5 V potential range. The studied materials exhibit good discharge capacity. Hole localization in thermoelectric half-Heusler (Zr0.5Hf0.5)Co(Sb1−xSn ) thin films

Abstract The (Ti, Zr, Hf)Co(Sb 1 − x Snx) material class has recently come into focus as an attractive p-type high-temperature thermoelectric material. This study experimentally demonstrates that homogeneous, highly textured (Zr0.5Hf0.5)Co(Sb 1 − x Snx) thin films can be grown on single crystalline MgO. By varying the sputter power, samples with both positive and negative Seebeck coefficient can be grown. The underlying reason for the sign change is the segregation of Sn nano-inclusions, which lower the effective doping of the half-Heusler matrix. Magnetization reversal of the domain structure in the anti-perovskite nitride Co3FeN investigated by high-resolution X-ray microscopy

We performed X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) photoemission electron microscopy imaging to reveal the magnetic domain structure of anti-perovskite nitride Co3FeN exhibiting a negative spin polarization. In square and disc patterns, we systematically and quantitatively determined the statistics of the stable states as a function of geometry. By direct imaging during the application of a magnetic field, we revealed the magnetic reversal process in a spatially resolved manner. Unusual domain-wall motion in ferromagnetic semiconductor films with tetragonal anisotropy

International audience; Magnetic field-driven domain-wall propagation in the flow regime is investigated in (Ga, Mn) As ferromagnetic semiconductor layers. Square-shape magnetic domains with an unexpected orientation of their edges, at pi/8 with respect to the anisotropy axes, are found. This is shown to arise from the effect of tetragonal magnetic anisotropy on domain-wall dynamics. Using a one-dimensional model for domain-wall motion and modeling domain growth by contour dynamics the shape and orientation of domains and their field range for existence are well reproduced. High sensitivity characterization of the nonlinear electric susceptibility of a glass ceramic in the microwave range

The nonlinear electric susceptibility of a glass ceramic is characterized in the microwave range by measuring intermodulation of two high-power signals. To achieve the necessary sensitivity for dielectric nonlinearities, the setup ensures that the measured intermodulation can be ascribed to the material under test while all other intermodulation sources are suppressed. This is achieved by coupling three dielectric resonators in a cut-off waveguide. The third order nonlinearity of the glass ceramic is found to be χ3/er = (1.6 ± 0.8) × 10−15 m2/V2 at 950 MHz. MD Simulation Investigation on the Binding Process of Smoke-Derived Germination Stimulants to Its Receptor

Karrikins (KARs) are a class of smoke-derived seed germination stimulants with great significance in both agriculture and plant biology. By means of direct binding to the receptor protein KAI2, the compounds can initiate the KAR signal transduction pathway, hence triggering germination of the dormant seeds in the soil. In the research, several molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques were properly integrated to investigate the binding process of KAR1 to KAI2 and reveal the details of the whole binding event. The sensing behaviour toward metal cations and biothiols of two 2,4,5-triarylimidazole probes (3a and 3b) is tested in acetonitrile and in acetonitrile-water. In acetonitrile the two probes present charge-transfer absorption bands in the 320-350 nm interval. Among all cations tested only Cu(11) is able to induce bathochromic shifts of the absorption band in the two probes, which is reflected in marked colour changes. Colour modulations are ascribed to the formation of 1:1 Cu(II)-probe complexes in which the cation interacts with the imidazole acceptor heterocycle. Heavy enzymes and the rational redesign of protein catalysts

Abstract An unsolved mystery in biology concerns the link between enzyme catalysis and protein motions. Comparison between isotopically labelled “heavy” dihydrofolate reductases and their natural‐abundance counterparts has suggested that the coupling of protein motions to the chemistry of the catalysed reaction is minimised in the case of hydride transfer. In alcohol dehydrogenases, unnatural, bulky substrates that induce additional electrostatic rearrangements of the active site enhance coupled motions.
