Purpose Migraine is an exclusively human chronic disorder with ictal manifestations characterized by a multifaceted clinical complexity pointing to a cerebral cortical involvement. The present review is aimed to cover the clinical, neuroimaging, and neurophysiological literature on the role of the cerebral cortex in migraine pathophysiology. Jacob et al. (2011) previously reported on intimate picture stimuli for emotion research in females in Psychiatry Research. Difficulties to engage in intimate relations constitute problems of many mental disorders, and intimacy must be differentiated from pure sex drive. Functional neuroimaging is an important tool to understand the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. We now studied cerebral activation in response to intimate stimuli in 35 healthy women. 4-Aminopyridine (4AP) Enhances Acetylcholine Output from the Rat Cerebral Cortex in vivo

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a study to analyze the effect of 4-aminopyridine (4AP) administration on cortical acetylcholine (ACh) output. The study was done on adult male Wistar rats under urethane or pentobarbital anesthesia. A small Perspex cylinder filled with eserinized Ringer solution was applied on the exposed cerebral cortex. The solution in the collecting cylinder was removed every 10 min and its ACh content was determined by bioassay on the dorsal muscle of the leech. In urethane anaesthetized rats, the control ACh output was 0.98 ± 0.16 ng/min/cm2 and the administration of 4AP (3 mg/kg i.p.) was followed by a rapid increase in ACh output lasting at least 40 min. We consider a set of data where the membrane potential in a pyramidal neuron is measured almost continuously in time, under varying experimental conditions. We use nonparametric estimates for the diffusion coefficient and the drift in view to contribute to the discussion which type of diffusion process is suitable to model the membrane potential in a neuron (more exactly: in a particular type of neuron under particular experimental conditions).

α-Adrenoceptor Interaction of Tetrandrine and Isotetrandrine in the Rat: Functional and Binding Assays

Abstract The action of 1S,1′S-tetrandrine, a bisbenzyltetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid, on α1-adrenoceptors has been compared with that of its isomer 1R,1′S-isotetrandrine. The work includes binding assays to analyse the affinity of these products for the [3H]prazosin binding site of rat cerebral cortical membranes and functional studies on rat isolated aorta to examine the effects of both alkaloids on intracellular calcium processes related or not to α-adrenoceptor activation. A radioligand receptor-binding study showed that both compounds interacted with the α1-adrenoceptors displacing [3H]prazosin from the specific binding site. Abstract Converging evidence indicates that repeated exposure to motor stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamine produces marked alterations in network responsiveness of striatal neurons to subsequent challenge with the same stimulant drug. Such alterations, which correlate with persistent patterns of repetitive behavior, associate with distinct compartmental changes in the neostriatum. The zona incerta system: Involvement in attention and movement

The zona incerta (ZI) is a large structure made of four neurochemically defined regions (at least, in rodents). It is globally involved in complex connections with telencephalic and brainstem centers. In this work, we focus on some of the anatomical links this structure develops with the cerebral cortex and the tectum. We also point to its integration within a larger basal ganglia network. The functions of this region are still mysterious, even if recent works suggest its participation in behavioral expression. Triiodothyronine accelerates the synthesis of synapsin I in developing neurons from fetal rat brain cultured in a synthetic medium.

The effect of Triiodothyronine (T3) on Synapsin I appearance in rat cortical neurons has been investigated in vitro. Neuronal cultures from 16-day-old fetal rat brain grown in the absence of T3, express immunohystochemically detectable Synapsin I at the 14th day in vitro. The addition of the hormone to the culture medium determines an early (at the 7th day in vitro) appearance of fluorescent dots specific for Synapsin I. © 1990 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
