The morphology, fine structure, and degree of colocalization with GABA, somatostatin, and neuropeptide Y of parvalbumin-containing cells were studied with immunocytochemistry in the cerebral cortex of the lizard Podarcis hispanica. Parvalbumin-containing cells make up a morphologically heterogeneous population of spine-free neurons, displaying the morphological features of nonprincipal cells previously described in Golgi studies. Electron microscopically, parvalbumin-immunoreactive cell bodies are similar in all cortical areas and layers. Mechanics of invagination and folding: Hybridized instabilities when one soft tissue grows on another

We address the folding induced by differential growth in soft layered solids via an elementary model that consists of a soft growing neo-Hookean elastic layer adhered to a deep elastic substrate. As the layer/substrate modulus ratio is varied from above unity towards zero we find a first transition from supercritical smooth folding followed by cusping of the valleys to direct subcritical cusped folding, then another to supercritical cusped folding. Beyond threshold the high amplitude fold spacing converges to about four layer thicknesses for many modulus ratios. Distribution and Function of Gap Junction Coupling in Cortical GABAergic Neurons.

Although gap junctions have been observed in GABAergic interneurons of several brain regions, this chapter focuses on the distribution and functions of gap junctions and connexins in inhibitory interneurons of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Evidence for interconnections mediated by electrical synapses is reported for at least eight cerebral cortex interneuron types, classified on the basis of morphology, electrophysiology and molecular markers. Efferent projections of the medial cortex of the lizards Podarcis hispanica and Gallotia stehlinii were studied by examining the transport of horseradish peroxidase; results were correlated with those from Timm-stained sections. Two efferent systems were found. The first reaches the distal part of the outer plexiform layer in the medial, dorsomedial, and dorsal cortices, i.e., zones that are negative to Timm staining, and possibly originates from horizontal fusiform neurons. Spoken-Word Segmentation and Dyslexia

We used magnetoencephalography to elucidate the cortical activation associated with the segmentation of spoken words in nonreading-impaired and dyslexic adults. The subjects listened to binaurally presented sentences where the sentence-ending words were either semantically appropriate or inappropriate to the preceding sentence context. Half of the inappropriate final words shared two or three initial phonemes with the highly expected semantically appropriate words.
