Education of children of pre-scholl age in the face of modern challenges

2014

The article touches upon the problems of modern pre-school education. The occurring civilization, cultural and economic changes require a different attitude towards the process of development and education of children of pre-school age. Basing on international research, a child is shown as a developing, active and thinking entity that requires innovative organization of pre-school education.

A study on the assessment of the production costs curves in micro-grids

2013

In micro-grids, due to their small scale, there is commonly only one power supplier. A competitive wholesale market hardly exists, so the question about how to consider market issues for small producers within micro-grids arises. On the other hand, the specific features of micro-grids where load and generated power hardly find a balance, require that customers take part to regulation issues, also using demand-response (DR) programs. In this paper, price responsive (PR) policies and their programs are discussed to answer this question. A case study of a micro-grid with one micro-turbine and two photovoltaic (PV) generators is analyzed to assess the overall production cost in order to build a…

Investigating protein structure and dynamics through wide-angle X-ray solution scattering

2016

Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) is a powerful tool that can be used to gain information on the structure and dynamics of proteins and other biomolecules in solution. Improved methods for the calculation of WAXS patterns from available or putative protein models allow to better exploit the structural information contained in the experimental data. These methods, together with recent applications of static and time-resolved WAXS, are briefly reviewed.

Lifestyle and Empowerment Techniques in Survivorship of Gynaecologic Oncology (LETSGO study): A study protocol for a multicentre longitudinal interve…

2021

IntroductionThe number of gynaecological cancer survivors is increasing and there is a need for a more sustainable model of follow-up care. Today’s follow-up model is time-consuming and patients have reported unmet needs regarding information about their cancer and strategies for managing the consequences of treatment. The main aim of this study is to assess health-related empowerment—in terms of patient education, psychosocial support, and promotion of physical activity—in a new follow-up model by comparing it to standard follow-up in a quasi-randomised study involving intervention hospitals and control hospitals. Methods and analysisAt the intervention hospitals, patients will be stratifie…

Manufacturing export performance and public capital: an analysis by country technology position

2021

The objective of this paper is to examine the relationship between public capital and manufacturing export performance. It also aims at investigating whether this relationship depends on the proximity of a country's technology frontier. To achieve this, we adopted a methodology that estimates the elasticities of public capital as a non-rival factor in a model that considers factor intensity as a mechanism of industrial development. We use an interaction model with panel data from 1999 to 2014 across 35 advanced and less advanced countries. Our results show that in countries far from the technology frontier, public capital accumulation is an element of industrial development as opposed to co…

Optimizing management to enhance multifunctionality in a boreal forest landscape

2017

The boreal biome, representing approximately one-third of remaining global forests, provides a number of crucial ecosystem services. A particular challenge in forest ecosystems is to reconcile demand for an increased timber production with provisioning of other ecosystem services and biodiversity. However, there is still little knowledge about how forest management could help solve this challenge. Hence, studies that investigate how to manage forests to reduce trade-offs between ecosystem services and biodiversity are urgently needed to help forest owners and policy makers take informed decisions. We applied seven alternative forest management regimes using a forest growth simulator in a la…

Redox reaction between amino‐(3,4‐dihydroxyphenyl)methyl phosphonic acid and dopaquinone is responsible for the apparent inhibitory effect on tyrosin…

2002

Amino‐(3,4‐dihydroxyphenyl)methyl phosphonic acid, the phosphonic analog of 3,4‐dihydroxyphenylglycine, had been previously reported as a potent inhibitor of tyrosinase. The mechanism of the apparent enzyme inhibition by this compound has now been established. Amino‐(3,4‐dihydroxyphenyl)methyl phosphonic acid turned out to be a substrate and was oxidized to o‐quinone, which evolved to a final product identified as 3,4‐dihydroxybenzaldehyde, the same as for 3,4‐dihydroxyphenylglycine. Monohydroxylated compounds (amino‐(3‐hydroxyphenyl)methyl phosphonic acid and amino‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)methyl phosphonic acid) were not oxidized, neither was 4‐hydroxy‐l‐phenylglycine. However, the relatively hig…

Tiam1 as a Signaling Mediator of Nerve Growth Factor-Dependent Neurite Outgrowth

2010

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)-induced neuronal differentiation requires the activation of members of the Rho family of small GTPases. However, the molecular mechanisms through which NGF regulates cytoskeletal changes and neurite outgrowth are not totally understood. In this work, we identify the Rac1-specific guanine exchange factor (GEF) Tiam1 as a novel mediator of NGF/TrkA-dependent neurite elongation. In particular, we report that knockdown of Tiam1 causes a significant reduction in Rac1 activity and neurite outgrowth induced by NGF. Physical interaction between Tiam1 and active Ras (Ras- GTP), but not tyrosine phosphorylation of Tiam1, plays a central role in Rac1 activation by NGF. In add…

The emissions reduction potential of substituting short-haul flights with non-high-speed rail (NHSR) : The case of Finland

2021

Replacing short-haul flights with high-speed rail (HSR) has been widely discussed as one solution to mitigate the climate change impacts of aviation. However, although HSR can provide travel times similar to those provided by short-haul flights, and at lower emission levels, it also requires considerable investments in time and infrastructure to build. Instead, this study considers the feasibility of replacing short-haul flights with existing non-high-speed rail (NHSR). Our study is based in Finland, a country that has an extensive route network of short-haul flights but does not possess any HSR. We compared all 16 city pairs for which short-haul flights are offered with existing NHSR based…
