Against all odds : Problem-solving as a skill critical to virtual exchange

2021

Virtual Exchange (VE) brings together groups of learners from different geographical locations and cultural backgrounds to engage them in online intercultural collaboration and interaction. Although VE projects are designed and implemented by educators as part of the students’ educational programmes, they often go beyond the setting of traditional courses offered by higher education institutions. Because of their innovative nature, VEs require the students to leave their comfort zone and think outside the box to develop new creative strategies of communication and collaboration in order to find solutions to problems that crop up in this new learning environment. This presentation showcases …

Modelling the removal and reversible immobilization of murine noroviruses in a Phaeozem under various contamination and rinsing conditions

2018

International audience; Enteric viruses entering the soil with contaminated irrigation water can reach groundwater or be internalized in plants through their roots without being inactivated. Their fate in the soil depends on the virus, the soil and the soil solution. In order to write a mathematical model suitable for a Calcaric Phaeozem, we investigated the removal of murine norovirus and reversible immobilization in aggregate columns according to a saturation procedure, conditions between contamination and rinsing time, temperature and soil solution. Viruses were quantified before and after 0.45‐μm filtration with an RT‐qPCR (real‐time polymerase chain reaction). Experimental results supp…

Virskorekcijas pielietojamība tuvredzības progresijas novērtēšanā ortokeratoloģijas pacientiem

2022

Pētījumā iekļauti 192 Eiropeīdās rases subjekti vecumā no 6 līdz 56 gadiem (vidēji 19,61±10,30). Izmantojot retrospektīvu analīzi, no objektīva BOZR kontaktlēcas parametra tiek iegūta virskorekcija (ORX). Jaunākiem cilvēkiem ir lielākas ORX vērtības, bet pieaugušajiem nav atšķirības (p<0,05). Vidēji tuvredzība progresēja par –0,18±0,44 D…

Cluster visual field progression and its relationship with optic disc changes

2015

Purpose Glaucoma diagnosis and follow up of progression is often based on structural and functional assessments. This study aimed to assess clustered progression and evaluate its correlation with the corresponding disc changes (RA sectors) obtained from HRT examinations. Methods 51 eyes from OHT and glaucoma patients with a minimum of 5 reliable visual ᴀ밄eld tests (HFA II i 24-2) and HRT with a follow-up >4 years were analyzed retrospectively. Linear regression of clusters deᴀ밄ned by the Glaucoma Hemiᴀ밄eld Test (GHT) was performed based on the mean threshold in each cluster. Global and sectoral rates of change in RAs were assessed and correlated with functional clustered measures. Cluste…

Explicit behavioral detection of visual changes develops without their implicit neurophysiological detectability

2011

Change blindness is a failure of reporting major changes across consecutive images if separated, e.g., by a brief blank interval. Successful change detection across interrupts requires focal attention to the changes. However, findings of implicit detection of visual changes during change blindness have raised the question of whether the implicit mode is necessary for development of the explicit mode. To this end, we recorded the visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) of the event-related potentials (ERPs) of the brain, an index of implicit pre-attentive visual change detection, in adult humans performing an oddball-variant of change blindness flicker task. Images of 500 ms in duration were prese…

Regional Farmers’ Perception and Societal Issues in Vineyards Affected by High Erosion Rates

2021

We explore the current situation in a viticultural region in Eastern Spain from a holistic and multifaceted research approach, which allowed us to understand the biophysical conditions, economic cost, social impact, and perception of the farmers’ community to the use of catch crops. A survey of the perception of the farmers, and an assessment of the biophysical impact of catch crops (CC) and tillage (C = Control plot) on soil organic matter, bulk density, infiltration capacity (single ring infiltrometer), and runoff generation and soil erosion (rainfall simulation experiments) was carried out. Two representative fields as study sites were selected in Les Alcusses valley, within Els Alforins…

Highly sensitive olfactory biosensors for the detection of volatile organic compounds by surface plasmon resonance imaging

2018

International audience; Nowadays, monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is very important in various domains. In this work, we aimed to develop sensitive olfactory biosensors using odorant binding proteins (OBPs) as sensing materials. Three rat OBP3 derivatives with customized binding properties were designed and immobilized on the same chip for the detection of VOCs in solution by surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi). We demonstrated that the proteins kept their binding properties after the immobilization under optimized conditions. The obtained olfactory biosensors exhibited very low limits of detection in both concentration (200pM of beta-ionone) and in molecular weight of …

Waste heat recovery from a marine waste incinerator using a thermoelectric generator

2012

Published version of an article published in the journal: Journal of Electronic Materials. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11664-012-2009-6 A marine waste incinerator has been evaluated for waste heat harvesting using thermoelectric generators (TEG). The application has been evaluated using mathematical modeling to optimize the heat exchanger and some vital design parameters of the TEG. The calculation shows that it is possible to extract 58 kW el at a price of 6.6 US$/W from an 850-kW th incinerator when optimizing for maximum power. However, minimizing the cost, it is possible to get 25 kW el at a price of 2.5 US$/W. A trade-off between the two targets lea…
