Observation of s-Channel Production of Single Top Quarks at the Tevatron

2014

We report the first observation of single-top-quark production in the s channel through the combination of the CDF and D0 measurements of the cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to total integrated luminosities of up to 9.7fb-1 per experiment. The measured cross section is σs=1.29-0.24+0.26pb. The probability of observing a statistical fluctuation of the background to a cross section of the observed size or larger is 1.8×10-10, corresponding to a significance of 6.3 standard deviations for the presence of an s-channel contribution to the production of single-top quarks. © 2014 American Physical Society.

General Flavor Blind MSSM and CP Violation

2001

We study the implications on flavor changing neutral current and CP violating processes in the context of supersymmetric theories without a new flavor structure (flavor blind supersymmetry). The low energy parameters are determined by the running of the soft breaking terms from the grand unified scale with SUSY phases consistent with the EDM constraints. We find that the CP asymmetry in b --> s gamma can reach large values potentially measurable at B factories, especially in the low BR(b --> s gamma) region. We perform a fit of the unitarity triangle including all the relevant observables. In this case, no sizeable deviations from the SM expectations are found. Finally we analyze the …

Long-term follow-up and novel genotype-phenotype analysis of monozygotic twins with ATP1A3 mutation in Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood-2

2020

Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) is a rare disorder characterized by frequent, transient attacks of hemiplegia involving either side of the body or both in association to several other disturbances including dystonic spells, abnormal ocular movements, autonomic manifestations, epileptic seizures and cognitive impairment. The clinical manifestations usually start before the age of 18 months. Two forms of the disorder known as AHC-1 (MIM#104290) and AHC-2 (MIM#614820) depends on mutations in ATP1A2 and ATP1A3 genes respectively, with over 75% of AHC caused by a mutation in the ATP1A3 gene. Herewith, we report serial clinical follow-up data of monozygotic (MZ) twin sisters, who presen…

Intestinal transport in constipation and diarrhoea.

1988

Approximatively 10 liters of fluid enter the gastrointestinal tract with food and endogenous secretions, and only less than 100 ml or 1% leave it with the faeces. Minor changes of this equilibrium in the intestinal transport may cause diarrhoea or constipation. Functions of small and large intestine differ markedly in transport of electrolytes and water. The relatively leaky epithelium of the small intestine allows for rapid equilibrium of osmolality in both directions while the tight epithelium of the colon preserves electrolytes and water once they have been absorbed. It may compensate secretory diarrhoea of the small intestine for instance caused by bacterial toxins to a certain degree u…

Tunable Optical Antennas Using Vanadium Dioxide Metal-Insulator Phase Transitions

2019

Here, we investigate the possibility of exploiting the insulator-to-metal transition in vanadium dioxide (VO2) to tune and optically control the resonances of dipole nanoantennas in the visible near-infrared region. We compare the results obtained in the case of antennas completely made by VO2 with those of previous works and highlight the key role of the substrate to perform dynamical tuning. We also present a highly efficient configuration composed of dipole gold antenna loaded with VO2 and give some general guidelines to optimally exploit phase transitions to tune nanodevices.

Prevention of the acute neurotoxic effects of phenytoin on rat peripheral nerve by H7, an inhibitor of protein kinase C.

1992

Abstract The neurotoxic effects of a single dose of phenytoin (150 mg/kg body weight) alone or 30 min after H7 (a protein kinase C inhibitor) injection (20 mg/kg body weight) were investigated in terms of peripheral neuromuscular function and Na + ,K + -ATPase activity of the sciatic nerve. This intraperitoneal injection of phenytoin induced complete blockade of muscle action potentials in the dorsal segmental muscles of the rat tail evoked by electric stimulation of the caudal nerve and a 40% decrease in the Na + ,K + -ATPase activity of the rat sciatic nerve when compared with control values, measured as the difference between total and ouabain-insensitive ATPase activity. Prior administr…

Updated Search for the Flavor-Changing Neutral-Current Decay D^0 \to {\mu} + {\mu}-

2010

We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay D0 \to {\mu}+ {\mu}- in pp collisions at \surd s = 1.96 TeV using 360 pb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A displaced vertex trigger selects long-lived D0 candidates in the {\mu}+ {\mu}-, {\pi}+{\pi}-, and K-{\pi}+ decay modes. We use the Cabibbo-favored D0 \to K-{\pi}+ channel to optimize the selection criteria in an unbiased manner, and the kinematically similar D0 \to{\pi}+ {\pi}- channel for normalization. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction (D0 --> {\mu}+ {\mu}-) < 2.1 E-7 (3.0 E-7) at the 90% (95%) confidence level.

Search for the rare decay Bs 0→μ+μ-

2010

We present the results of a search for the flavor changing neutral current decay B-s(0) -> mu(+)mu(-) using 6.1 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The observed number of B-s(0) candidates is consistent with background expectations. The resulting upper limit on the branching fraction is B(B-s(0) -> mu(+)mu(-)) < 5.1 x 10(-8) at the 95% C.L. This limit is a factor of 2.4 better than that of the previous DO analysis and the best limit to date. Published by Elsevier B.V.

General flavor blind minimal supersymmetric standard model andCPviolation

Restricted flavor structure of soft SUSY breaking trilinear couplings

2000

We analyze the flavor structure of the trilinear couplings in the different theoretical models of SUSY breaking. We generically obtain A_{ij}= A^L_i + A^R_j in all the models examined. In fact, this is the rigorous form when SUSY breaking effects appear through the Kahler metric of chiral fields or through wave-function renormalization. Indeed, the low-energy phenomenological requirements from the absence of charge and color breaking minima and the measurements in flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) observables strongly favor this restricted form of the trilinear matrices. As a straightforward consequence, the number of unknown parameters associated with the trilinear couplings is decrea…
