Covering by discrete and closed discrete sets.

2008

Say that a cardinal number $\kappa$ is \emph{small} relative to the space $X$ if $\kappa <\Delta(X)$, where $\Delta(X)$ is the least cardinality of a non-empty open set in $X$. We prove that no Baire metric space can be covered by a small number of discrete sets, and give some generalizations. We show a ZFC example of a regular Baire $\sigma$-space and a consistent example of a normal Baire Moore space which can be covered by a small number of discrete sets. We finish with some remarks on linearly ordered spaces.

Characterization of multifunction meters based on integrated devices in the presence of harmonic distortion

2008

This paper is focused on the problem of the metrological characterization of multifunction static meters based on integrated devices, in both reference and actual operating conditions. The influence of the measurement transducers on the performance of such meters is also discussed. The analysis is supported by some experimental tests, which were carried out on a meter based on a commercial integrated device, both in the absence and in the presence of the measurement transducers.

Spaces of Operator-valued Functions Measurable with Respect to the Strong Operator Topology

2009

Let X and Y be Banach spaces and (Ω, Σ, μ) a finite measure space. In this note we introduce the space L p /μ; ℒ(X, Y)] consisting of all (equivalence classes of) functions Φ:Ω↦ℒ(X, Y) such that ω↦Φ(ω)x is strongly μ-measurable for all x∈X and ω↦Φ(ω)f(ω) belongs to L 1(μ; Y) for all f∈L p′ (μ; X), 1/p+1/p′=1. We show that functions in L p /μ; ℒ(X, Y)] define operator-valued measures with bounded p-variation and use these spaces to obtain an isometric characterization of the space of all ℒ(X, Y)-valued multipliers acting boundedly from L p (μ; X) into L q (μ; Y), 1≤q<p<∞.

Fiber-based measurement of temporal intensity and phase profiles of an optical telecommunication pulse through self-phase modulation

2018

International audience; We propose and experimentally validate an all-fiber based approach to characterize the phase and intensity profiles of optical pulses. Based on three optical spectra affected by different levels of self-phase modulation, we were able to reconstruct the temporal details of pulses typical of optical telecommunications.

Far-Field Optical Control of a Movable Subdiffraction Light Grid

2012

International audience; We demonstrate experimentally a subdiffraction light pattern, with a period down to 150 nm, at the surface of an optimized silicon nanostructured thin film. We show, using near-field and far-field characterization, that this subdiffraction pattern can be translated and rotated just by changing the illumination angle. The movable high frequency light pattern paves the way for subdiffraction resolution surface imaging microscopy without scanning near-field probes.

Performance improvement of a novel combined water turbine

2020

Abstract Nowadays, industrials and researchers are looking for renewable energy resources due to the increase of energy demand. Recently, the ability of combined turbines in harnessing energy from water current has increased their renewed interest. However, there still exist a big knowledge gap to select the optimal design of these turbines. In this paper, systematic studies of stand-alone helical Savonius and delta bladed Darrieus turbines were carried out using experimental methods as a precursor to analyze their roles in hybrid configuration. By varying the attachment angle, two hybrid configurations were tested experimentally. Using the optimal attachment angle, six hybrid configuration…

Synthesis, characterization and thermal degradation of 8-hydroxyquinoline–guanidine–formaldehyde terpolymer

2007

Abstract Terpolymer (8-HQGF) has been synthesized using the monomers 8-hydroxyquinoline, guanidine, formaldehyde in 1:1:2 molar proportions. The structure of 8-HQGF terpolymer has been elucidated on the basis of elemental analysis and various physicochemical techniques, i.e. UV–Visible, FTIR–ATR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Detailed thermal degradation study of the new terpolymer has been carried out to ascertain its thermal stability. Thermal degradation curve is discussed which shows two decomposition steps (265–475 °C and 540–715 °C). Sharp–Wentworth and Freeman–Carroll methods have been used to calculate activation energies and thermal stability. The activation energy ( E a ) calculated by…

Electrochemical fabrication of metal/oxide/conducting polymer junction

2011

After discovery of conducting polymers and the possibility to modify their electrical properties from insulating to metallic like behavior by doping and a careful choice of the processing conditions, a large amount of research effort has been devoted to the theoretical understanding of their solid state properties as well as to exploit the possible application of conducting polymers in many technological fields including large area organic electronics, polymer photovoltaic cell, and sensors. 1-4 Organic thin film transistors appear very promising devices for the development of low cost, flexible, and disposable plastic electronics. In order to reduce the operating voltage it has been sugges…

: National contexts, organisation of educational systems and inequalities between pupils : the PISA enquiry contribution

2003

This paper, after having described both mean scores and dispersion of the different countries integrated in PISA last study, put together those "products" with economic and cultural characteristics of the countries considered. It explores also the relationship between the pupils'scores and some institutional characteristicis of the educational systems. Results show that pupils'scores follow some geographical patterns, and also that some relations exist between scores and some institutional or pedagogical practices such as repeating or tracking.
