Photoelectrochemical characterization of photocatalysts

2021

Abstract This chapter aims to provide an overview of the photoelectrochemical characterization of semiconducting photocatalysts and, in particular, present Photocurrent Spectroscopy (PCS) as a useful tool in determining the band structure of semiconducting/insulating materials. Some fundamentals on PCS will be provided looking at the experimental setup and underlying its advantages and disadvantages. Then, the photoelectrochemical behavior of a semiconductor/electrolyte junction under irradiation will be presented, also taking into account its crystalline or amorphous nature, highlighting how it is possible to get information on the energetics of the junction. This will be exploited to show…

Photocurrent spectroscopy of thin passive films

2002

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews theoretical background on the photoelectrochemistry of metal and semiconductor electrodes on which photocurrent spectroscopy (PCS) relies, by focusing particularly on new features that are typical of the photoelectrochemical behavior of thin passive films and usually absent in the behavior of bulk crystalline semiconductors. The chapter also highlights the advantages of PCS in getting in situ information on the structure of the metal-passive-film-electrolyte systems and shows a more recent quantitative use of this technique in characterizing the composition of passive films. The formation of a protective film on a metallic surface is a key step in esta…

Characterization of Thin Film Cig(S,Se)2 Submodules Using Solar Simulator and Laser Beam Induced Current Techniques

2015

In this work, the electrical and optical characterization of CIG(S,Se)2 sub-modules using both a solar simulator equipment and the Laser Beam Induced Current (LBIC) technique is presented. By using the solar simulator and a proper set-up, the electrical parameters of the modules at varying irradiance and temperatures are determined. In addition, the LBIC measurements are carried out to analyze the 2D photocurrent uniformity of the modules at two different wavelengths. Dispersion values of extracted parameters can be very useful for practically tuning the modelling stage at device/module level.

Photoelectrochemical evidence of Nitrogen Incorporation during Anodizing of Sputtering-Deposited Al-Ta alloys

2016

Anodic films were grown to 20 V on sputtering-deposited Al–Ta alloys in ammonium biborate and borate buffer solutions. According to glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy, anodizing in ammonium containing solution leads to the formation of N containing anodic layers. Impedance measurements did not evidence significant differences between the dielectric properties of the anodic films as a function of the anodizing electrolyte. Photoelectrochemical investigation allowed evidencing that N incorporation induces a red-shift in the light absorption threshold of the films due to the formation of allowed localized states inside their mobility gap. The estimated Fowler threshold for the intern…

Photoelectrochemical evidence of Nitrogen Incorporation during Anodizing of valve metals alloys

2015

Amorphous and/or nanocrystalline oxide films can be easily prepared electrochemically by anodizing. The anodizing allows to grow oxides with structural and compositional features easily and strictly controlled by the process parameters.

Extended liquid-crystalline oligofluorenes with photo- and electroluminescence

2010

In this paper we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of low-molecular weight light-emitting molecules based on short oligofluorene cores, from one to three 9,9-dioctylfluorene units, elongated at the 2- and 7-positions by means of promesogenic units. The effect of this structural modification on the mesomorphic properties, as well as on the optical and electrochemical properties, is studied. The possibility of using these molecules as emitters in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and polarized photoluminescent layers has been explored.

Assembly-Induced Bright-Light Emission from Solution-Processed Platinum(II) Inorganic Polymers

2019

Synthesis, processing, and characterization are reported for a series of tetracyanoplatinate Magnus' salt (TCN-MS) derivatives-soluble derivatives of the generally intractable Magnus' green salt-that feature the general structure [Pt(NH2R)(4)] [Pt(CN)(4)] where R is a branched alkyl group or a w-phenylalkyl group. In solutions, these coordination compounds generally dissolve on the level of individual ion pairs as shown by X-ray diffraction analysis. To enable the formation of quasi-one-dimensional linear stacks of Pt(II) atoms in thin films, the matrix-assisted assembly is employed, whereby the compounds are codissolved with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), followed by film casting, thermally a…

Application of Room Temperature Photoluminescence From ZnO Nanorods for Salmonella Detection

2014

ZnO nanorods grown by gaseous-disperse synthesis are confirmed by XRD analysis to have the wurtzite crystal structure. The obtained crystallites, as found from SEM studies, are 57 +/- 9 nm in diameter and 470 +/- 30 nm long on the average. Two emission bands of photoluminescence from ZnO nanorods observed at room temperature are centered at 376 and 520 nm. A biosensitive layer is prepared by immobilization of anti-Salmonella antibodies from liquid solutions on the ZnO surface. Immobilization of the biosensitive layer onto ZnO nanorods is found to increase the intensity of PL. After further reaction with Salmonella antigens (Ags), the PL intensity is found to decrease proportional to Ag conc…

Photoabsorption and MXCD in Photoemission Microscopy for Characterization of Advanced Materials

1999

We used imaging spectromicroscopy to characterise micro-patterned thin films of magnetic materials like FeNi alloys on Silicon. To investigate devices built from complex materials we applied element-sensitive photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM). Information about the chemical composition of the imaged sample can be obtained by PEEM via tuning the photon energy to X-ray absorption edges. One aim of our work was to observe oxygen related defects and changes in the composition effecting the physical properties of the materials. The use of circularly polarised photons allows us to image magnetic domains by making use of the magnetic circular dichroism (MXCD).

The experimental setup of the Interaction in Crystals for Emission of RADiation collaboration at Mainzer Mikrotron: Design, commissioning, and tests

2015

Silicon/germanium flat/bent crystals are thin devices able to efficiently deflect charged particle GeV-energy beams up to a few hundreds of μrad; moreover, high intensity photons can be efficiently produced in the so-called Multi-Volume Reflection (MVR) and Multiple Volume Reflections in One Crystal (MVROC) conditions. In the last years, the research interest in this field has moved to the dynamic studies of light negative leptons in the low energy range: the possibility to deflect negative particles and to produce high intensity γ sources via the coherent interactions with crystals in the sub-GeV energy range has been proved by the ICE-RAD (Interaction in Crystals for Emission of RADiation…
