Physical pre-treatment of plums (Prunus domestica). Part 2. Effect on the quality characteristics of different prune cultivars

2002

The effects of an alternative physical pre-treatment for enhancing the drying rate of different plums (Stanley, Angeleno(R), and Empress), are evaluated by means of the principal chemical parameters and by skin colour. The pre-treatment consists of the superficial abrasion of the plums' peels using an inert abrasive material to remove the cuticular waxy layer, the limiting factor for moisture loss. The drying process was carried out at 60 C to reduce the plums' quality loss, the latter being assessed by analysing the changes in skin colour, sugars by HPLC, total phenols, total anthocyanins, and reactive substances to the vanillin-HCl reagent. The proposed physical pre-treatment, without sig…

Prevalence and characteristics of prisoners requiring end-of-life care: A prospective national survey

2017

Background: Ensuring adequate end-of-life care for prisoners is a critical issue. In France, data investigating the impact of laws allowing release of seriously ill prisoners are lacking. Aim: To assess the number and characteristics of prisoners requiring palliative care in French prisons. Design: A prospective, national survey collecting data over a 3-month period. Setting/participants: All healthcare units ( n = 190) providing care for prisoners in France. The prison population was 66,698 during the study period. Data collection concerned prisoners requiring end-of-life care, that is, with serious, advanced, progressive, or terminal illness and life expectancy <1 year. Results: Estima…

Technological Transformation in the Global Pulp and Paper Industry : Concluding Remarks

2018

The volume has provided us with illustrative, well-documented case studies of technological transformation in the global pulp and paper industry. The research has focused on the roles played by the availability of technology, knowledge, investments, and raw materials on the one hand and demand characteristics on the other, within local, regional, national and transnational organisational frameworks. It has dealt with the relationships between technology transfer, technology leadership, raw material dependence, and product variety on a global scale. The investigation has followed the tradition of in-depth and rich historical descriptions based on primary sources and secondary literature. The…

Pilot study on university students' opinion about STEM studies at higher education

2020

The percentages of women enrolled in higher education in the STEM sector are significantly lower than those of men. Overall, gender representation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees in Europe is not balanced. The Leaky Pipeline phenomenon, marked by gender stereotypes, makes the latent gender gap a relevant topic of study. Studies exist on academic performance, self-perception, self-efficacy, outcome expectations; however, studying gender stereotypes linked to STEM studies is also essential. It is necessary to know the social and family context in which young people have grown up, as well as their perception of such studies. To study gender stereotypes of university…

Outcome of patients with elevated LDH treated with first-line targeted therapy (TT) or PD-1 based immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)

2019

Abstract Background Elevated LDH is a known predictive and prognostic factor correlating with poor response rates and survival in patients (pts) with metastatic melanoma (MM) treated with targeted therapy (BRAF plus MEK inhibitors, TT) or immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). Whether TT or ICI in this subgroup of pts is more beneficial is unknown. Methods Pts with MM and elevated LDH who started first-line therapy between March 2016 and June 2017 were retrospectively identified from 25 melanoma centers. The cohort was divided into 2 groups: pts receiving TT first-line (TT group) and ICI first-line (ICI group). Primary endpoints were overall response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS)…

Individual participant data systematic reviews with meta-analyses of psychotherapies for borderline personality disorder: A protocol

2020

AbstractIntroductionThe heterogeneity in people with BPD and the range of specialised psychotherapies means that people with certain BPD characteristics might benefit more or less from different types of psychotherapy. Identifying moderating characteristics of individuals is a key to refine and tailor standard treatments so they match the specificities of the individual patient. The objective of this is to improve the quality of care and the individual outcomes. Thus, the aim of the current reviews is to investigate potential predictors and moderating patient characteristics on treatment outcomes for patients with BPD.Methods and analysisOur primary meta-analytic method will be the one-stag…

The Relationship among Paternal and Maternal Psychological Control, Self-Esteem, and Indecisiveness across Adolescent Genders

2015

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among adolescents’ indecisiveness, adolescents’ self-esteem, and maternal and paternal psychological control by focusing on the differences in the relationship among these variables across adolescent genders. A total of 381 Italian adolescents (215 boys and 166 girls), aged from 13 to 17 years, completed self-report measures of parental psychological control, self-esteem and indecisiveness. Since previous studies have highlighted indirect relations between family characteristics and indecisiveness, structural equation modeling (SEM) methods were used for testing self-esteem as a possible mediator. In particular, a multiple group anal…

AS14-02 - Common and distinct treatment elements in psychotherapies for borderline personality disorder

2012

Introduction Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is defined as “a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, affects, and marked impulsivity” (DSM-IV-TR; APA, 2000). These very characteristics make it difficult to establish firm therapeutic relationships and keep patients in treatment. In recent decades, a number of new psychotherapeutic approaches have been developed in order to meet these specific challenges and demands. To date, there is evidence of efficacy for various treatments, as data of a recent systematic review and meta-analysis of our working group indicate. Objectives To give an overview of all psychotherapeutic treatments investigated in ran…

Nuevas perspectivas sobre la detección de pediculosis activa en escolares del sur de Brasil

2021

The present study aims to analyze the prevalence and risk factors of active pediculosis and to compare the efficacy and sensitivity of the vacuum method with the comb method and the visual inspection with a magnifying glass in order to determine the best methodology to detect active pediculosis among schoolchildren from Paraná state. Each child was examined by the three methods in sequence and a playful activity was introduced to increase the children likelihood to participate in the study. Additionally, hair characteristics and other risk factors as sex, age, and area of living were take into consideration to measure epidemiological aspects. From a total of 358 schoolchildren from southern…

Asthma exacerbations and socio-economic status in French adults with persistent asthma: A prospective cohort study.

2017

Adults disadvantaged by poor socio-economic status (SES) are more severely affected by asthma compared to those with better SES. We aimed to determine whether the frequency of asthma exacerbations (AEx), as well as aspects related to AEx management, differed based on SES in patients treated with daily treatments. This study, part of the prospective observational cohort ASTRO-LAB, included French adult patients with persistent asthma. Patients were considered as low SES if they benefited from publicly funded special health insurance and/or were perceived as low SES by their general practitioner. AEx was defined as at least one of the following: asthma-related oral corticosteroid course, medic…
