‘Dry’ electrochemistry: A non-invasive approach to the characterization of archaeological iron objects

2021

A methodology for monitoring the corrosion state of archaeological iron objects using ‘dry’ open circuit potential (OCP) measurements is described. Application of this technique to a set of objects from La Bastida de les Alcusses archaeological site (Moixent, València, Spain), dating back to the 4th century BCE, reveals significant differences depending on the conservation state. The transient OCP responses (which last between a few seconds and 10–15 min) were superimposed with much shorter (less than one second) intense features. Fil: Doménech Carbó, Antonio. Application of Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry for Ultratrace Analysis of Technetium

2017

This work shows the ability of resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) to determine 99gTc at the ultratrace level. The characterization of the prepared samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and optimization of the RIMS setup for this purpose, as well as the application of the RIMS method to a soil sample, are presented in this article. 97Tc was used as a tracer isotope to determine the amount of 99gTc in a soil sample with RIMS. With 8.8 × 1010 atoms of 97Tc as the tracer, the concentration of 99gTc was found to be 1.5 × 109 atoms per gram of dried sample material, demonstrating the sensitivity of the method. Furthermore, it could be shown that the 97Tc solution contained …

Assessment of Polarity in GaN Self-Assembled Nanowires by Electrical Force Microscopy

2015

In this work, we demonstrate the capabilities of atomic force microscopies (AFMs) for the nondestructive determination of the polarity of GaN nanowires (NWs). Three complementary AFMs are analyzed here: Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), light-assisted KPFM, and piezo-force microscopy (PFM). These techniques allow us to assess the polarity of individual NWs over an area of tens of μm(2) and provide statistics on the polarity of the ensemble with an accuracy hardly reachable by other methods. The precise quantitative analysis of the tip-sample interaction by multidimensional spectroscopic measurements, combined with advanced data analysis, has allowed the separate characterization of elec…

Characterization of PP-cLT Waveguides for Second-Harmonic-Generation and Wavelength-Conversion in the C + L Band of Optical Communications

2010

We report the characterization of single-mode optical waveguides at telecom wavelength, realized in congruent lithium-tantalate. We demonstrate that waveguides realized by proton-exchange show a nonlinear coefficient matching that expected in a bulk crystal.

Sensitive magnetometry reveals inhomogeneities in charge storage and weak transient internal currents in Li-ion cells

2020

The ever-increasing demand for high-capacity rechargeable batteries highlights the need for sensitive and accurate diagnostic technology for determining the state of a cell, for identifying and localizing defects, and for sensing capacity loss mechanisms. Here, we leverage atomic magnetometry to map the weak induced magnetic fields around Li-ion battery cells in a magnetically shielded environment. The ability to rapidly measure cells nondestructively allows testing even commercial cells in their actual operating conditions, as a function of state of charge. These measurements provide maps of the magnetic susceptibility of the cell, which follow trends characteristic for the battery materia…

Durability of calcarenitic hypogea in the underground cultural heritage of Palermo (Sicily)

2011

The paper deals with the stability conditions of hypogea, several hundred m 2 wide, dating from the Punic period to the XIX century, dug out of the calcarenitic table that makes up the bedrock of the Plain of Palermo in the Fossa della Garofala. This work concerns the influence that the shape of the hypogea and the characteristics of the lithotypes wields on the instability and decay phenomena taking place, by mean of laboratory tests on the calcarenite and parametric numerical models. The comparison between the numerical models and the actual instability phenomena validated the use of the empirical formula of Hoeck to the mechanical characterization of complex structured rock-mass in soft …

Preliminary characterization of wild lactic acid bacteria and their abilities to produce flavour compounds in ripened model cheese system.

2007

Aims:  The aim of this work was to preliminary characterize wild lactic acid bacteria (LAB), previously isolated during artisanal Pecorino Siciliano (PS) cheese-making for technological and flavour formation abilities in a model cheese system. Methods and Results:  Twelve LAB were studied for the ability to grow at 10 and 45°C, to coagulate and acidify both reconstituted skim milk and ewe's milk. Moreover, the capacity of the strains to generate aroma compounds was evaluated in a model cheese system at 30- and 60-day ripening. Flavour compounds were screened by sensory analysis and throughout gas chromatography (GC)–mass spectrometry (MS). Most of the strains were able to grow both at 10 an…

La1-xSrxCo1-yFeyO3-delta perovskites: Preparation, characterization and solar photocatalytic activity

2015

Abstract LaCoO3 perovskites substituted by Sr at the A site and/or by Fe at the B site have been prepared by the citrate method. Characterizations by several techniques, such as specific surface area (BET method), XRD, TPR, SEM, UV–vis in DRS mode, XPS and TGA analyses, have been performed. The so prepared La1−xSrxCo1−yFeyO3−δ perovskites are semiconductor materials showing band gap energy values from 1.9 to 3.2 eV. They displayed solar photocatalytic activity for the 2-propanol degradation in gas–solid regime. The photocatalytic results suggest that the perovskites containing Fe are less active and the activity decreases by increasing the Fe content, however the presence of iron avoids the…
