Mn(IV) and Co(III)-complexes of –OH-rich ligands possessing O2N, O3N and O4N cores: syntheses, characterization and crystal structures

2003

Mn(IV) and Co(III) complexes of tridentate –OH–rich ligands possessing O2N, O3N and O4N donor sets were synthesized, characterized and their structures were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction, where the binding core is O4N2. In the structurally characterized complexes, the coordination geometry about the metal ion was found to be distorted octahedral.

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of soil organic matter extracted from a Brazilian mangrove and Spanish salt marshes

2009

The soil organic matter (SOM) extracted under different vegetation types from a Brazilian mangrove (Pai Matos Island, São Paulo State) and from three Spanish salt marshes (Betanzos Ría and Corrubedo Natural Parks, Galícia, and the Albufera Natural Park, Valencia) was investigated by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The chemical variation was larger in SOM from the Spanish marshes than in the SOM of the Brazilian mangroves, possibly because the marshes included sites with both tidal and nontidal variation, whereas the mangrove forest underwent just tidal variation. Thus, plant-derived organic matter was better preserved under permanently anoxic environments. Moreove…

Physico-Chemical Characterization of Anodic Oxides on Hf as a Function of the Anodizing Conditions

2016

Anodic films were grown to 5 V (Ag/AgCl) on mechanically polished Hf in 0.1 M ammonium biborate and 0.1 M NaOH. Independent of the anodizing conditions, the photoelectrochemical characterization allowed the observation of optical transitions at 3.25 eV, i.e. at photon energy lower than the bandgap of HfO2. They are attributed to localized states inside the gap of the oxide induced by the presence of oxygen vacancies. From the cathodic photocurrent spectra, it was possible to estimate an energy threshold of ∼2.15 eV for internal electron photoemission phenomena. The impedance measurements proved the formation of insulating oxides with ϵ =19. The anodizing occurs under a high field regime wit…

Structural performances of pultruded GFRP emergency structures – Part 1: Experimental characterization of materials and substructure

2019

Abstract This paper presents an experimental study in the field of structures made of pultruded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) elements to be used for emergency purposes. A preliminary design of a 3D pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer structure is presented with the mechanical characterization of the constituting elements. The axial and flexural properties of laminate and I-shaped GRFP profiles are discussed considering the short term creep. In a companion paper, the benefits, the limits and the reliability of the structure analyzed for emergency applications are discussed. In details, the numerical structural analysis of the full-scale 3D model is described followed by the experimen…

Porous Materials Based on 3-Dimensional Td-Directing Functionalized Adamantane Scaffolds and Applied as Recyclable Catalysts

2018

Porous materials have been of high scientific and technological interest owing to their unique performances in many topical applications related to multiphasic functional systems: gas separation and storage, heterogeneous catalysis, energy conversion, etc. We review herein the synthetic strategies applied for using functionalized adamantane derivatives as polyhedral (mainly tetrahedral, Td-directing) building units of three-dimensional (3-D) porous supramolecular structures and nanomaterials, either purely organic or within metal hybrid frameworks. The resulting materials are currently used in varied heterogeneous (or supported) transition metal catalysis and organocatalysis, including rece…

Measurement of UV-induced absorption and scattering losses in photosensitive fibers

2018

UV-assisted fabrication of gratings using photosensitive fibers is a well-established technique, based on the UV-induced permanent modification of the refractive index of the fiber material. As a result, the absorption coefficient is also changed. Here, we exploit the thermal sensitivity of whispering gallery mode resonances of the fiber itself to measure the profile of the heating along an irradiated fiber versus the input power and for different UV radiation intensities. Our technique allows discriminating between the absorption and scattering contributions to the overall losses, by comparing the results obtained with our technique with direct transmission measurements. Different photosen…

Photocatalytic H2 production over inverse opal TiO2 catalysts

2019

Abstract The influence of BiVO4 and CuO on the chemico-physical properties of TiO2-based systems is reported. The performances of these systems were investigated in the photocatalytic H2 production both under UV and solar light irradiation. The characterization data pointed out that the obtained TiO2 samples have highly porous inverse opal structures with interconnected macropores. Inverse opal TiO2 exhibited higher activity in the H2 production than the commercial TiO2 due to the peculiar porosity that allows photons to enter inside the photocatalyst. A further improvement in terms of photoactivity was verified by addition of increasing amounts of BiVO4. On the contrary a small CuO content…

Adhesion Strength Test Comparison for HVOF Nickel-Based Superalloy Powders on Steel Substrates and Layer Characterization

2018

Thermal sprayed nickel chrome powders are known as the best materials for combined wear and corrosion applications and represent a good alternative to hard chrome plating. The coating from these materials are resistant to wear abrasion, contact with hard surfaces, particle erosion, fretting and have excellent submerged saltwater corrosion resistance. The work in this paper is focused on determining the adhesion strength for nickel powders and structural characterization of the deposited layers using metallographic analysis. The adhesion strength testing was carried out in accordance with ASTM C633 procedure. During the experimental program, an investigation was also carried out for studying…
