Identification of Vibrio spp. (other than V. vulnificus) recovered on CPC agar from marine natural samples

2000

Two hundred and eighty four presumptive but not confirmed Vibrio vulnificus isolates grown on cellobiose-polymixin B-colistin agar (CPC) at 40°C, recovered from sea water samples from Valencia, Spain, during a microbiological survey for V. vulnificus, were phenotypically identified. Most of the isolates (91%) corresponded to Vibrio species. V. harveyi (24%) and V. splendidus(19%) were the most abundant species identified, followed by V. navarrensis (13%), V. alginolyticus (8%) and V. parahaemolyticus (5%). The ability to grow on CPC agar and ferment cellobiose of several V. vulnificus strains from different origins and serovars, including reference strains, was tested. Most serovar E isolat…

Optical characterization of nanowires for optoelectronic devices and energy harvesting

2019

This thesis presents a detailed investigation of the optical properties of Bi2Te3, GaN, InN, InP and GaN/AlN nanowires grown by different techniques for their application on future optoelectronic and thermoelectric devices. The thesis also includes a prototype of hybrid solar cell. The outline of the thesis is organized as follows: Chapter 1 presents a bird's eye view of the content of the thesis. Chapter 2 reviews basic notions of epitaxial growth, fundamentals in the synthesis of the nanowires and experimental techniques used for characterization and their underlying theory. Although several characterization techniques are employed in this work, Raman spectroscopy is applied as the major …

Physico-Chemical Characterization of an Exocellular Sugars Tolerant Β-Glucosidase from Grape Metschnikowia pulcherrima Isolates

2023

A broad variety of microorganisms with useful characteristics in the field of biotechnology live on the surface of grapes; one of these microorganisms is Metschnikowia pulcherrima. This yeast secretes a β-glucosidase that can be used in fermentative processes to liberate aromatic compounds. In this work, the synthesis of an exocellular β-glucosidase has been demonstrated and the optimal conditions to maximize the enzyme’s effectiveness were determined. There was a maximum enzymatic activity at 28 °C and pH 4.5. Furthermore, the enzyme presents a great glucose and fructose tolerance, and to a lesser extent, ethanol tolerance. In addition, its activity was stimulated by ca…

Characterization of triphenylamino-based polymethine dyes

2013

In this high-technology application, age functional dyes especially polymethine dyes have captured much attention of the researchers due to their immense potential for high-tech uses. Polymethine dyes show promising absorption spectra in the visible range, which can be easily exploited for the use of written text copying, photographic imaging, or photothermographic recording materials. Keeping this in mind, our research is composed of an investigation of two triphenylamino-based polymethine dyes, a known polymethine dye 3 and a new one polymethine dye 5, which have been synthesized by the reaction of 4-(diphenylamino) benzaldehyde 2 and 4,4′-(phenylazanediyl) dibenzaldehyde 4 with 4,4′-viny…

Structural, magnetic and electronic characterization of an isostructural series of dinuclear complexes of 3d metal ions bridged by tpbd

2013

Abstract Dinuclear complexes of the type [{M(H2O)(phen)}2(μ-tpbd)](ClO4)4 with N,N,N′,N′-Tetrakis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-benzene-1,4-diamine (tpbd) as bridging ligand and M = Mn(II) (1), Fe(II) (2), Co(II) (3), Ni(II) (4), Cu(II) (5), Zn(II) (6) were synthesized, structurally analyzed and their magnetic as well as their electrochemical properties are determined. A ligand-centered one-electron oxidation leads to radical complexes for which the lifetimes are strongly dependent on the coordinated metal ion as followed from time-resolved UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. In addition to the six homometallic dinuclear complexes, one analog heterometallic Mn(II)/Ni(II) compound (7) of the same constituti…

Acoustic characterization of the ancient theatre at Syracuse

2008

The ancient theatre at Syracuse, the largest open air theatre in Sicily, experienced many structural changes along its history. Today its very renowned drama festival attracts visitors from all the world that fill the entire cavea: customized seats accomodation and a prominent stage play an important role in the theatre acoustics. Because no data were available in literature on its acoustical perfomance a measurement session was carried out by our team in the framework of a wide research project on ancient theatres acoustics in the modern use. From data recorded "room criteria" parameters have been evaluated together with spectral analysis in order to gain a deeper information on the acoust…

Review of Advanced Acoustical Imaging Techniques for Nondestructive Evaluation of Art Objects

2006

Proper preventative diagnosis of different art objects, including wooden, bronze and marble sculptures, frescoes, and paintings (on canvas, wood, metal, and glass), is very important for conservation purposes. Various advanced ultrasonic imaging methods for analysis and assessment of art objects can bring about drastic changes in the regular evaluation and inventory carried out by museums and can bring advanced, powerful, and new techniques for objective assessment of physical conditions of museum resplendence. Using these methods, it will be possible to plan ad hoc repair works on art objects, and, as a result, we will preserve our heritage. The goal of this review is to introduce recent a…

Preparation and characterization of octadecyl acrylate monoliths for capillary electrochromatography by photochemical, thermal, and chemical initiati…

2013

Monolithic stationary phases based on octadecyl acrylate for CEC using different initiating systems (UV irradiation, thermal, and chemical initiation) in the presence of lauroyl peroxide as initiator were synthesized. For each initiation mode, the influence of the porogenic solvent composition on both the morphological and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting monoliths was investigated. Under optimal conditions, excellent efficiencies for the photochemically and chemically polymerized monoliths (minimum plate heights of 6.9–10.7 and 6.5–12.6 μm, respectively) were achieved. Thermally initiated columns gave lower efficiency values, permeabilities, and longer analysis times comp…

Tissue characterization of benign brain tumors: Use of NMR-tissue parameters

1988

Abstract To evaluate the potentials of NMR tissue parameters for tissue characterization we investigated 68 patients with benign brain tumors. Tissue parameters were accurately measured by a recently developed interlaced triple sequence. Each individual tumor was characterized by a set of three numbers (relaxation times T 1 and T 2 and proton density Rho). Different tumors exhibited significant overlaps of the three tissue parameters. Therefore a reliable prediction of the histological diagnosis based on the quantitative analysis of tissue parameters alone was not possible. T 2 -prolongation correlated well with water content and “regressive changes” in meningiomas and neuromas.
