Tetrathiafulvalene-Polychlorotriphenylmethyl Dyads: Influence of Bridge and Open-Shell Characteristics on Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties

Three conjugated donor-π-acceptor radical systems (1 a–1 c) were prepared by bridging a tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) electron-donor unit to a polychlorotriphenylmethyl (PTM) electron-acceptor radical through vinylene units of different lengths. The dependence of the intramolecular charge transfer on the length of the conjugated bridge has been analyzed by different electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. Linear optical properties and the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response of these derivatives have been computed by comparing systems 1 a–1 c with the non-radical analogues (2 a–2 c). Topological insulators in filled skutterudites

We propose new topological insulators in cerium filled skutterudite (FS) compounds based on ab initio calculations. We find that two compounds CeOs4As12 and CeOs4Sb12 are zero gap materials with band inversion between Os-d and Ce-f orbitals, which are thus parent compounds of two and three-dimensional topological insulators just like bulk HgTe. At low temperature, both compounds become topological Kondo insulators, which are Kondo insulators in the bulk, but have robust Dirac surface states on the boundary. Visible Light Induced Oxidation of Ferulic Acid by TiO2 Photocatalysis

Oxidation of ferulic acid (C10H10O4) in aqueous medium occurs by using both commercial and home prepared TiO2 samples under visible light irradiation. Among the oxidation products vanillin was found with a selectivity ranging from 1 to 2% with respect to the converted substrate. By considering that TiO2 is unable to absorb visible light and ferulic acid does not react in the absence of TiO2, the observed photoactivity may be explained by the formation of a charge-transfer complex between ferulic acid and TiO2, being the complex able to absorb visible light. The origin of slow electron recombination processes in dye-sensitized solar cells with alumina barrier coatings

We investigate the effect of a thin alumina coating of nanocrystalline TiO2 films on recombination dynamics of dye-sensitized solar cells. Both coated and uncoated cells were measured by a combination of techniques: transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and open-circuit voltage decay. It is found that the alumina barrier reduces the recombination of photoinjected electrons to both dye cations and the oxidized redox couple. The alteration of copper pigments in art samples was studied by linear scan and cyclic voltammetry using sample-modified Elvacite 2044 film electrodes on the basis of two-dimensional diagrams of charge transfer coefficients calculated from Tafel plots of reductive dissolution processes vs. peak potential. Characteristic voltammetric peaks were obtained for pigments used in the baroque vault frescoes of the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados painted by Antonio Palomino. Description of Solid-to-Solid Redox Processes Based on the Voltammetry of Immobilized Particles Methodology: A Logistic Approximation

A semiempirical model to describe the voltammetry of nontopotactic solid-to-solid redox processes occurring in the voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) electrochemistry is described. It is applied to the reduction of solid metal compounds to the corresponding metal in contact with suitable electrolytes. The model is based on the assumption that the transferred charge is a logistic function of the applied potential, a situation that applies for reversible redox processes involving strongly adsorbed reactants. Photoinduced charge separation in functional carbon-silver nanohybrids

In recent times, nanoscience is devoting growing interest to the easy assembly of well-established nanomaterials into hybrid nanostructures displaying new emerging features. Here, we study the photophysicochemical response of binary nanohybrids obtained by the spontaneous coupling of luminescent carbon dots to silver nanoparticles with controlled surface charge. Evidence of the successful coupling is obtained by steady-state and time resolved optical measurements and further confirmed by direct imaging.
