Chitosan-Coating Deposition via Galvanic Coupling

2019

A galvanic method to deposit chitosan coatings on stainless steel substrate is reported. Deposition of suitable coatings is desired to improve biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of metallic medical devices to be implanted in human body. In the present work, a thin hydrogel layer of chitosan was deposited on 304SS by a galvanic displacement reaction, which is advantageous first as it does not require external power supply. 304SS was immersed into an aqueous solution of chitosan/lactic acid and electrochemically coupled with magnesium acting as a sacrificial anode. SEM images showed the formation of a uniform layer of chitosan with a thickness controlled by deposition time. Corrosion t…

Biopolymer-Targeted Adsorption onto Halloysite Nanotubes in Aqueous Media.

2017

Studies on the adsorption of biopolymers onto halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) in water were conducted. Three polymers with different charges-anionic (pectin), neutral (hydroxypropyl cellulose), and cationic (chitosan)-were chosen. The thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of polymers onto the HNT surface were determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The experimental data were interpreted based on a Langmuir adsorption model. The standard variations in free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of the process were obtained and discussed. Turbidimetry was used to evaluate the stability of functionalized nanoparticles in water. The ζ-potential clarified the surface charge properties of …

Characterization and osteogenic activity of a silicatein/biosilica-coated chitosan-graft-polycaprolactone.

2014

Several attempts have been made in the past to fabricate hybrid materials that display the complementary properties of the polyester polycaprolactone (PCL) and the polysaccharide chitosan (CHS) for application in the field of bone regeneration and tissue engineering. However, such composites generally have no osteogenic activity per se. Here we report the synthesis of a chitosan-graft-polycaprolactone (CHS-g-PCL) and its subsequent characterization, including crystallinity, chemical structure and thermal stability. Upon surface-functionalization of CHS-g-PCL with osteogenic biosilica via the surface-immobilized enzyme silicatein, protein adsorption, surface morphology and wettability were a…

Functionalized silver doped hydroxyapatite scaffolds for controlled simultaneous silver ion and drug delivery

2017

Abstract Bacterial infections are a major problem in bone tissue regeneration, thus it is essential to incorporate antibacterial properties within the bone scaffolds. Silver compounds are frequently used as antibacterial agents to prevent bacterial infections and numerous studies have shown that silver ions can be incorporated within the biocompatible and osteoconductive biomaterial hydroxyapatite (HAp) structure, but, so far, no study has thoroughly evaluated silver ion release rates in long term. Therefore, we have established a novel carrier system for local drug delivery based on functionalized silver doped hydroxyapatite with determined long term silver ion release rates. Silver ions f…

Fibrin-chitosan composite substrate for in vitro culture of chondrocytes

2013

The aim of this study was to develop a biocompatible monolayer substrate based on fibrin and chitosan for in vitro culture of chondrocytes. Fibrin-chitosan composite substrates combined the proved cell adhesion properties of fibrin with the hydrophilicity and poor adhesion capacity of chitosan. Chitosan microspheres were produced by coacervation method, agglomerated within a fibrin network and subsequently crosslinked with genipin. The composite substrate was stable for 28 days of culture due to the high crosslinking density. Human chondrocytes cultured on the composite substrate were viable during the culture period. At the end of culture time (28 days) the composite substrate showed low c…

Improvement in the performance of low temperature H2-O2 fuel cell with chitosanephosphotungstic acid composite membranes

2016

Abstract Free-standing chitosan/phosphotungstic acid polyelectrolyte membranes, prepared by ionotropic gelation on alumina porous supports, were employed as proton conductor in low temperature H 2 –O 2 fuel cell. A drying step on glass substrate was introduced in the fabrication procedure to reduce shrinkage and consequent corrugation. Membranes were tested with electrodes prepared according to different procedures and with two different Pt loadings, namely 0.5 and 1 mg cm −2 . Both the investigated kinds of electrodes allowed to get very promising power peaks of 550 mW cm −2 in spite of the different Pt content. The polarization curves and the electrochemical impedance spectra suggest that…

Performance of H2-fed fuel cell with chitosan/silicotungstic acid membrane as proton conductor

2020

Composite organic–inorganic proton exchange membranes for H2–O2 fuel cells were fabricated by ionotropic gelation process combining a biopolymer (chitosan) with a heteropolyacid (silicotungstic acid). According to scanning electron microscopy analysis, compact, homogeneous and free-standing thin layers were synthesized. X-ray diffraction proved the crystallinity of the fabricated membranes and showed the presence of Chitosan Form I polymorph soon after the reticulation step and of the Form II polymorph after the functionalization step. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the Keggin structure of the heteropolyacid is maintained inside the membrane even after the fabrica…

Phosphomolybdic acid and mixed phosphotungstic/phosphomolybdic acid chitosan membranes as polymer electrolyte for H2/O2 fuel cells

2017

Abstract Flat, free-standing phosphomolybdic acid and mixed phosphotungstic/phosphomolybdic acid chitosan membranes were prepared by in-situ ionotropic gelation process at room temperature on porous alumina support firstly impregnated by heteropolyacid. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of compact and homogenous polymeric membranes, whose thickness resulted to be dependent on reticulation time, and almost independent on the employed heteropolyacid nature and concentration. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy evidenced the formation of crystalline membranes without appreciable concentration of unprotonated NH 2 groups and heteropolyacid ions with p…

Investigation of Acetone Vapour Sensing Properties of a Ternary Composite of Doped Polyaniline, Reduced Graphene Oxide and Chitosan Using Surface Pla…

2020

This work reports the use of a ternary composite that integrates p-Toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI), chitosan, and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as the active sensing layer of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The SPR sensor is intended for application in the non-invasive monitoring and screening of diabetes through the detection of low concentrations of acetone vapour of less than or equal to 5 ppm, which falls within the range of breath acetone concentration in diabetic patients. The ternary composite film was spin-coated on a 50-nm-thick gold layer at 6000 rpm for 30 s. The structure, morphology and chemical composition of the ternary composite samples were character…

Carvacrol affects interfacial, structural and transfer properties of chitosan coatings applied onto polyethylene

2012

Different chitosan coating solutions were tested with the aim of investigating their adhesion and wettability onto polyethylene film to improve packaging performance and provide antimicrobial properties. Surface wetting kinetics was monitored by contact angle measurements. Addition of ethanol and carvacrol improved wettability and adhesion of the thin chitosan layer. Structure, water vapour, O2, CO2 and air permeabilities of self supported chitosan films and coated polyethylene were determined. The formation of a thin chitosan layer on polyethylene improved gas barrier properties decreasing the Permeability Coefficient for oxygen and carbon dioxide ( [Formula: see text] , [Formula: see text…
