Seagrass ecosystem response to long-term high CO2 in a Mediterranean volcanic vent

We examined the long-term effect of naturally acidified water on a Cymodocea nodosa meadow growing at a shallow volcanic CO2 vent in Vulcano Island (Italy). Seagrass and adjacent unvegetated habitats growing at a low pH station (pH = 7.65 ± 0.02) were compared with corresponding habitats at a control station (pH = 8.01 ± 0.01). Density and biomass showed a clear decreasing trend at the low pH station and the below- to above-ground biomass ratio was more than 10 times lower compared to the control. Effect of storage on quality parameters and phenolic content of Italian extra-virgin olive oils

The quality of extra virgin olive oils is affected mainly by hydrolytic and oxidative reactions. The present paper investigated the changes of major and minor components and oxidation indices of three monovarietal extra virgin olive oils after 18 months of storage at room temperature and in dark glass bottles conditions. After storage, the basic quality parameters such as free acidity, peroxide values, extinction coefficients, fatty acids composition, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, did not exceed the upper limits set by European Community Regulations for extra-virgin olive oils. Differences in ozone sensitivity in three varieties of cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) in the rural Mediterranean area

Summary The effects of air quality with three levels of ozone (O 3 ) were studied on three cabbage varieties during a one month exposure period in the Valencia area by means of modulated chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, lipid peroxidation and solute leakage. Increasing O 3 exposure reduced the maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (F v /F m ) in line with a reduction in non-cyclic electron flow (ϕ PSII ), lower capacity to reduce the quinone pool (q P ) and a decrease in the potential phothosynthetic quantum conversion, Rfd ratio. Recombinant water-soluble chlorophyll protein from Brassica oleracea var. Botrys binds various chlorophyll derivatives.

A gene coding for water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein (WSCP) from Brassica oleracea var. Botrys has been used to express the protein, extended by a hexahistidyl tag, in Escherichia coli. The protein has been refolded in vitro to study its pigment binding behavior. Recombinant WSCP was found to bind two chlorophylls (Chls) per tetrameric protein complex but no carotenoids in accordance with previous observations with the native protein [Satoh, H., Nakayama, K., Okada, M. (1998) J. Biol. Chem. 273, 30568-30575]. The Existence of Chlorophyll c in the Chl b‐Containing, Light‐Harvesting Complex of the Green Alga Mantoniella squamata (Prasinophyceae)

The prasinophycean alga Mantoniella contains, in addition to Chl a and b, at least a third green pigment which is functionally active in the light-harvesting antenna. This third Chl was isolated in order to elucidate its chemical structure. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured not only from the purified pigment but also from its pheophytin and its methylpheophorbide. The spectra were compared with those of authentic Chl c-1 and c-2, which were isolated from the diatom Nitzschia sp. and with Mg-DVPP (purified from Rhodobacter). Fluorescence induction kinetics as a tool to detect a chlororespiratory activity in the prasinophycean alga, Mantoniella squamata

Abstract Pulse-modulated fluorescence measuring systems were used to study the fluorescence induction kinetics of the primitive prasinophycean alga, Mantoniella squamata . DCMU-treated cells show a very strong non-photochemical quenching which is insensitive to uncouplers and can not be attributed to state transitions or photoinhibition. In order to analyze the origin for this quenching, different inhibitors of the photosynthetic electron flow were applied. Studies on the mechanism of photosystem II photoinhibition I. A two-step degradation of D1-protein

The role of D1-protein in photoinhibition was examined. Photoinhibition of spinach thylakoids at 20°C caused considerable degradation of D1-protein and a parallel loss of variable fluorescence, QB-independent electron flow and QB-dependent electron flow. The breakdown of D1-protein as well as the loss of variable fluorescence and QB-independent electron flow were largely prevented when thylakoids were photoinhibited at 0°C. The QB-dependent electron flow markedly decreased under the same conditions.
