Choroidal thickness is associated with renal hemodynamics in essential hypertension

2020

The choroid is the most vascularized structure of the eye and plays a central role in the development of the retinal vascular changes that occur in arterial hypertension. Changes of choroidal thickness (ChT) assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology could reflect the vascular complications of hypertension. Also, intrarenal hemodynamic damage, associated with endothelial dysfunction, demonstrated to be a good indicator of systemic morphofunctional arterial impairment. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between ChT and renal hemodynamics in subjects with essential hypertension. Routine laboratory tests, clinical history, and physical examination, including blo…

Clinical history of thrombosis before diagnosis of overt myeloproliferative neoplasms in triple negative patients

2017

Thromboses are the most important preventable risk factors for morbidity and mortality in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). We here performed a retrospective cross sectional study of patients with a diagnosis of Philadelphia negative MPN and a prior history of thrombosis, analyzed from electronic charts. Among a cohort of 260 patients with MPNs (78PV, 102ET, 80 MF), forty four were found triple negative for JAK-2, calreticulin and MPL gene mutations. Sixty-nine (26.54%) patients (29F, 40M) had a personal past clinical history of arterial or venous thrombosis. Among patients with thrombosis, 13(18.8%) cases (11ET, 2MF) were triple negative (median age:60 years). Most events, in particular …

An overview of randomized controlled trials on endovascular treatment for chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency in multiple sclerosis patients

2021

About ten years ago it was hoped that venous angioplasty for abnormal veins, primarily the internal jugular veins, will be a much awaited treatment for multiple sclerosis. Yet, a majority of randomized clinical trials on endovascular treatment for chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency did not reveal clinical efficacy of these procedures in multiple sclerosis patients. Still, a detailed analysis of these trials suggests that they were poorly designed, underpowered and endovascular techniques used were often far from being optimal. Nonetheless, even considering weak points of these trials, it can be concluded that venous angioplasty should not be used as a routine treatment modality in m…

Risk stratification tools to predict future hospital admissions in elderly people. Application, development and implementation in the Valencian Healt…

2017

DYSPHORIC-LIKE BEHAVIOUR DURING ETHANOL WITHDRAWAL IN FEMALE RATS. EFFECT OF CONTINUOUS VS INTERMITTENT ACCESS PARADIGM.

2014

Women show higher vulnerability for neuroadaptation to alcohol, which may contribute to negative emotional state during withdrawal (Sharrett-Field et al., 2013; Koob and Le Moal, 1997). This study aimed at exploring the effects of different patterns of voluntary ethanol consumption on female rat"s affective behaviour during withdrawal. Female rats underwent 12-week-, 2-bottle choice- continuous or intermittent (3 days/week ) access to 20% ethanol and were respectively named CARs and IARs. They were tested for alcohol preference; dysphoric-like state during withdrawal (24-48h); depressive- and anhedonic-like behaviours explored by forced swim- and saccharin preference tests; anxiety-like beh…
