Chronic pain management in non-oncologic patients: multicentric study on adult patients referring to the centers for pain management in the Lazio Reg…

2013

Introduction Chronic pain is a complex phenomenon usually associated with psychological stress, which implies falling back on the National Health Service and reducing work capacities, indeed affecting Activities of Daily Living. Studies based on efficacy have identified the multidisciplinary approach as the most effective means to obtain therapeutic results. These programs can be provided by the Centers for Pain Management (CPMs), where multidisciplinary teams are likely to provide the necessary expertise to outline the best treatments for the diagnosis and management of chronic pain. To date, very little information is available on the kind of assistance and support these centers can provi…

An appraisal of the fit of a cognitive behavioural model of headache in University students

2018

The aim of this study was to evaluate the fit of a cognitive behavioural model of headache in the population of University students, from Córdoba,Argentina. The direct and indirect contributions to pain intensity of control beliefs, beliefs and thoughts about pain and coping strategies weredetermined, as were the direct contributions of pain behaviours and disability. The sample was comprised of 382 students of both genders fromseveral Universities. Multiple instruments were administered to measure the variables proposed in the cognitive behavioural model of headachefollowed by a descriptive and exploratory analysis of the data. Structural equation modelling was used and revealed an accepta…

Accessory submaxillary gland : two new case reports and a literature review

2020

Background The accessory submaxillary gland is a very uncommon anatomical variant, and incidence in the general population has not yet been quantified. The presence of pathology in these glands is rarer still, thus often going unnoticed. Material and methods We describe two accessory submaxillary gland cases, one asymptomatic and the other with chronic sialadenitis in the main and accessory gland caused by sialolithiasis. Although our diagnosis was by computerized tomography, magnetic resonance sialography is helpful to understand and describe this entity with greater precision. Results The first case report is an incidental finding and no intervention was required. However, case report num…

Cardiovascular diseases and HCV infection: a simple association or more?

2013

HCV infection, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular alterations, considered alone or in combination, are common conditions in a large proportion of the general population. Consequently, determining whether the association of HCV infection with cardiometabolic disorders is simply coincidental or, conversely, caused by pathogenetic mechanisms (in)directly linking chronic HCV infection to these disorders, would be of extreme relevance. Several clinical studies have shown that metabolic disorders—namely, type 2 diabetes,1 insulin resistance (IR)2 and hepatic steatosis3—are highly prevalent in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) compared with non-infected patients. Experimental and clinica…

SAT0390 Microrna Expression Profile in Fibromyalgia Patients: A Pilot Matched Case Control Study

2013

Background Fibromyalgia (FM) is a clinical syndrome characterized by musculoskeletal pain and tenderness. Diagnosis is mainly based on exclusion of other resembling diseases since validated biological tests are still lacking. Identification of disease-related markers will enable clinicians to effectively diagnose FM, follow the progress of the disease, monitor the effects of therapeutic approaches and probably develop preventive programs. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are pieces of 18-25 nucleotides capable of regulating gene expression. Changes in their expression levels have been linked to environmental responses as well as to pathological processes. Their recent association to some other chronic di…

CD49d Expression Identifies a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Subset with High Levels of Circulating CD34 +Cells Co-Expressing Endothelial Cell Ma…

2009

Abstract Abstract 2329 Poster Board II-306 Introduction: In chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), CD49d, often in association with CD38, has been shown to mark a disease subset with poor prognosis. Functionally, both molecules act as counter-receptors for surface structures (i.e. VCAM-1/CD106 and CD31) usually expressed by the endothelial/stromal component of tumor micro-environment. We have recently identified a micro-environmental circuitry which involves CD38 triggering, and eventually determines an enrichment of the VCAM-1/CD106-expressing endothelial component detected in the context of CLL infiltrates found in bone marrow biopsies. Data was also provided that CD49d/VCAM-1 interactions a…

Bioassays for TSH Receptor Antibodies: Quo Vadis?

2015

Autoantibodies (Ab) to the TSH receptor (TSHR) are responsible for many of the clinical manifestations of Graves' disease (GD) and are specific biomarkers of this autoimmune thyroid disorder (AITD) [1,2,3]. These Ab can be measured either via competitive-binding immunoassays or with bioassays [4]. Antibody-binding assays only report the presence or absence of TSHR-Ab and their concentrations, but do not indicate their functional activity. Bioassays, in contrast, indicate whether TSHR-Ab have stimulatory or blocking activity [5]. Historically, bioassays for TSHR-Ab were research tools used to study the pathophysiology of GD. Recently, however, there are increasing data that demonstrate the c…
