Treatment of chronic hepatitis C

1991

alpha-Interferon given subcutaneously at doses between 1-3 million units leads to responses in about 50% of patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C. A 24-week treatment is frequently (approx. 50%) followed by relapses reducing the percentage of lasting responders to approx. 20%. The patients who relapse are sensitive to retreatment with interferon-alpha. A better understanding of HCV replication and of the interferon action in this viral disease might help to further improve treatment schedules. Side effects of interferon were frequently mild and readily reversible after cessation of treatment. At present interferon treatment should not be recommended in asymptomatic patients or individ…

High prevalence and little awareness in patients with chronic inflammatory skin diseases and genital involvement.

2020

Background Genital involvement in patients with chronic inflammatory skin diseases is frequent, yet insufficiently acknowledged. Objective To evaluate the prevalence of genital symptoms in psoriasis and chronic urticaria patients, effects on quality of life, physician-patient relations and disease management. Patients and methods 100 patients with psoriasis and 100 with chronic urticaria from our outpatient clinic, as well as 50 healthy controls were included. Data was collected using questionnaires developed by dermatological experts. Results Out of 250 subjects, 74 % had already experienced genital symptoms - 70 % of psoriasis patients and 58 % of urticaria patients. Seven out of ten even…

Informed consent in high-risk renal transplant recipients.

2009

Abstract Before performing a clinical, diagnostic, and/or therapeutic action, the doctor is required to provide the patient with a bulk of information defined as informed consent. This expression was used for the first time in 1957 during a court case in California and the two words— informed and consent —are used together to underline the fact that the patient cannot give his or her true consent without first receiving correct information concerning the medical act in question. With regard to the medicolegal aspects governing organ transplants, despite the bulk of detailed work performed by health service workers involved in this surgical field with the aim of preparing adequate informed c…

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension from the perspective of patients with pulmonary embolism

2018

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare but feared long-term complication of acute pulmonary embolism (PE), although CTEPH may occur in patients with no history of symptomatic venous thromboembolism. It represents the most severe presentation of the so-called 'post-PE syndrome', a phenomenon of permanent functional limitations after PE caused by deconditioning after PE or ventilatory or circulatory impairment as a result of unresolved pulmonary artery thrombi. Because the post-PE syndrome may occur in up to 50% of PE survivors, and CTEPH tends to have an insidious and non-specific clinical presentation, CTEPH is often not diagnosed or diagnosed after a very long dela…

Does adiponectin play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic spontaneous urticaria?

2020

Introduction Chronic spontaneous urticaria constitutes an interdisciplinary problem and its pathogenesis is still a subject of debate. Overweight and hyperlipidemia are supposed to be related to chronic spontaneous urticaria. Fatty tissue can be the source of adipokines. Aim of the study To assess the potential role of adiponectin in chronic spontaneous urticaria pathogenesis. Material and methods The study included 52 chronic spontaneous urticaria patients and 43 healthy controls. The patients were divided into two subgroups: patients with wheals only, and patients with urticaria and an accompanying angioedema. The adiponectin concentration was measured in all studied subjects. Results No …

Temporal trends in chronic total occlusion interventions in Europe: 17626 procedures from the European Registry of Chronic total occlusion

2018

Background: The study focuses on the evolution of practice, procedural outcomes, and in-hospital complications of chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention in Europe. Methods and Results: Data from 17 626 procedures enrolled in European Registry of Chronic Total Occlusion between January 2008 and June 2015 were assessed. The mean patient age was 63.9±10.9 years; 85% were men. Procedural success increased from 79.7% to 89.3% through the study period. Patients enrolled during the years had increasing comorbidities and lesion complexity (J-CTO score [Multicenter CTO Registry of Japan] increased from 1.76±1.03 in 2008 to 2.17±0.91 in 2015; P for trend, <0.001). Construct validity and reliability of Finnish version of Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Screening Questionnaire

2016

Abstract Introduction Chronic pain causes suffering for affected individuals and incurs costs to society through work disability. Interventions based on early screening of psychological risk factors for chronic pain using screening tools such as the Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Screening Questionnaire (ÖMPSQ) have been found to reduce work absenteeism and health care visits and increase perceived health. The aim of the current study was to translate the ÖMPSQ into Finnish and test its validity and reliability in a patient sample. Methods The ÖMPSQ was forward–backward translated and cross-culturally adapted, and applied to our study population (n = 69), the members of which had been referred…

The Therapeutic Effects of Whole-Body Vibration in Patients With Fibromyalgia. A Randomized Controlled Trial

2021

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disease with few effective therapeutic options. We evaluated the efficacy of a 12-weeks therapy program that involves the use of whole body vibration in patients with fibromyalgia. The experimental group (N = 20 patients) participated in a neuromuscular training with a rotational whole body vibration platform for 12 weeks. The control group (N = 20 patients) received no physiotherapy treatment. The following variables were assessed before, after and 3 months after the therapy program: Fibromyalgia impact questionnaire, pain intensity, quality of life, sensitivity measurements (pressure pain thresholds, vibration thresholds), motor function tasks (Berg scale, 6…

Lactitol in treatment of chronic hepatic encephalopathy. A meta-analysis.

1993

The efficacy and side effects of lactitol in the treatment of chronic hepatic encephalopathy was compared to that of other disaccharides in a meta-analysis of published randomized clinical trials (RCTs). The outcomes assessed were: (1) the rate of patients free from episodes of clinically detectable encephalopathy, and (2) the rate of patients free from one or more side effects in the different treatment groups. Four RCTs were eligible for analysis; in three lactitol was compared to lactulose, in one the alternative treatment was lactose in lactase-deficient patients. The methodological quality of these studies was high. Meta-analysis showed that lactitol was as effective as other disacchar…
