Oxidative stress induces myeloperoxidase expression in endocardial endothelial cells from patients with chronic heart failure.

2009

Increased oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of cardiovascular diseases. Recent findings suggest that myeloperoxidase (MPO) may play a key role in the initiation and maintenance of chronic heart failure (CHF) by contributing to the depletion of the intracellular reservoir of nitric oxide (NO). NO consumption through MPO activity may lead to protein chlorination or nitration, leading to tissue damage. Primary cultures of human endocardial endothelial cells (EEC) obtained at heart transplantation of patients with CHF and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were subjected to oxidative stress by incubation with hydrogen peroxide at non lethal (60 mic…

Association of chronic periodontitis with white blood cell and platelet count: a Case Control Study

2013

Objectives:The objective of the study was to determine whether plasma levels of white blood corpuscles (WBCs) and platelets were altered in patients with chronic periodontitis compared to healthy controls. Study Design:A total of 120 subjects, 60 with chronic periodontitis and 60 with healthy periodontium of age group 30-50 years were selected for the study. Oral hygiene status and pocket probing depth were measured. During clinical evaluation, venous blood samples were taken to analyze the WBC and platelet counts. Statistical analysis was utilized to compare differences across various groups. Results:The WBC count was higher in patients with chronic periodontitis when compared with control…

Patient perspectives in the management of asthma: improving patient outcomes through critical selection of treatment options

2010

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that requires long-term treatment, the goal of which is to control clinical symptoms for extended periods with the least possible amount of drugs. International guidelines recommend the addition of an inhaled long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) to a low- to medium-dose inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) when low doses of ICS fail to control asthma symptoms. The fixed combined administration of ICS/LABA improves patient compliance, reducing the risk of therapy discontinuation. The relative deposition pattern of the inhaled drug to the target site is the result of a complex interaction between the device used, the aerosol formulation and the pat…

Osteoporosis in men: a case report

2010

Osteoporosis in men is frequently not considered, underdiagnosed and often undertreated. In contrast with osteoporosis occurring in women, the genesis is frequently secondary (30-60%) with a complex diagnostic approach. A careful anamnesis and physical examination associated with laboratory and instrumental evaluation are necessary for an accurate diagnosis. The clinical case presented concerns a 70-year-old man with negative family history for osteoporosis and a personal history of depression, HBV carrier, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a heavy ex-smoker with history of alcoholism. The comprehensive geriatric evaluation allowed us to diagnose a multifactorially seconda…

How to manage aspergillosis in non-neutropenic intensive care unit patients.

2014

Invasive aspergillosis has been mainly reported among immunocompromised patients during prolonged periods of neutropenia. Recently, however, non-neutropenic patients in the ICU population have shown an increasing risk profile for aspergillosis. Associations with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and corticosteroid therapy have been frequently documented in this cohort. Difficulties in achieving a timely diagnosis of aspergillosis in non-neutropenic patients is related to the non-specificity of symptoms and to lower yields with microbiological tests compared to neutropenic patients. Since high mortality rates are typical of invasive aspergillosis in critically ill patients, a high level …

The role of stress in the onset of depressive disorders

2002

Background: We conducted the present study to evaluate the impact of stressful events on the onset of depressive disorders in a Spanish clinical sample, compared to a control group matched for age, sex, civil status and social class. We compared our results with those of other studies carried out with samples that were both clinically and culturally similar to ours. Method: Fifty depressed patients that were diagnosed with a depressive episode in the 6 months prior to the interview and 50 healthy controls were included in the study. Both groups were compared on the “Life Events and Difficulties Schedule” (LEDS). Results: Of the depressive patients, 68 % compared to only 18 % of the control …

The dilemma for patients with chronic hepatitis C: treat now or warehouse?

2013

Dual therapy with peginterferon and ribavirin, the only treatent for chronic hepatitis C available In Italy and in many other ountries worldwide up to 2013, obtains satisfactory response ates in infections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2, but far rom optimal for other genotypes [1,2]. Eradication requires 6–12 onths of therapy, with significant inconvenience for patients: dverse reactions force premature termination in about 20% of atients and reduced the quality of life for almost all who persist n treatment. In view of the important and prolonged side effects, nterferon-based treatment is perceived as a nightmare by many symptomatic,well-being, socially activepatients (the largema…

The new frontier of bone formation: a breakthrough in postmenopausal osteoporosis?

2009

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease that accelerates after menopause in many women. Most of the pharmacologic attempts to control the disease, such as hormone therapy, have emphasized the constraint of bone resorption. Since recent years have witnessed important advances in the field of bone formation, this review aims to update the present knowledge on the mechanisms affecting osteoblastogenesis and on the therapeutic results achieved by recently approved drugs. We sought peer-reviewed, full-length basic and clinical articles published between 1995 and May 2008 using a PubMed search strategy, with the terms osteoporosis and osteoblast, osteoporosis and strontium ranelate, and osteoporosis and…
