Chronic pain affects the whole person--a phenomenological study.
2014
The aim of this qualitative study was to explore participants' perspectives on the effects of chronic pain on the psychophysical unity.Thirty-four chronic pain outpatients were interviewed, and the transcribed interviews were analysed with Giorgi's four-phase phenomenological method. The mean age of the participants was 48 years, and 19 of them were women. For 21 of the participants, the pain duration was more than 5 years, and most had degenerative spinal pain. The results of this whole research project indicated that the phenomenon chronic pain consisted of four essential themes: Pain affects the whole person, invisibility, negativity, and dominance of pain. This study concentrates only on…

Symptoms and signs of chronic venous disorders: can we put an end to the controversy
2015
Controversies surrounding symptoms and signs of chronic venous disorders
2016
Association of so-called venous symptoms (aching, itching, tingling, burning sensation, swelling, easily fatigued legs, leg heaviness, and leg restlessness) with chronic venous disease (CVD) still remains a controversial issue. Although these symptoms and a decreased quality of life are common in patients with venous incompetence, and are even more frequent in those with a history of venous thrombosis and/or recurrent and bilateral varicose veins, research has actually revealed that these complaints are poorly correlated with objective signs of venous insufficiency. A venous source for these complaints is obvious in patients with advanced CVD, but a substantial part of venous symptoms, espe…
Dotyczyło to zarówno braci, ojców, wyższych funkcyjnych klasztornych, a nawet samych opatów.
Between looking back and moving ahead : an exploration of the role of the body and its movement in a music therapy case study
2017
We exist in this world through our bodies. Every single experience is stored in it, it helps us to communicate with others, relate and build meaningful relationships. However, when the connection to our experiences or the control over our body is disrupted by a traumatic experience or disease, we become disconnected from our genuine self and the world around us. Music therapy provides us with a space for integration – of painful or joyful memories, emotions, and our bodies. Especially in Western cultures this physical relationship to music is often neglected, even though music and dance probably developed simultaneously and are still very much the same in some African cultures. When we are …
Retinal abnormalities in multiple sclerosis patients with associated chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency
2012
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive method for the assessment of optic nerve fibers and retinal ganglion cells. This study was aimed at the assessment of retinal abnormalities in multiple sclerosis patients in the context of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency using OCT of the retina and the optic nerve. We examined 239 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, including 220 patients with associated chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency and 19 MS patients without venous pathology. The following OCT parameters were assessed: average ganglion cell complex thickness, global loss volume, focal loss volume and average retinal nerve fibre layer thickness. Abnormalities in the…
Interconnections among inflammation, chronic liver disease and HIV: understanding the hepatoprotective effects of the antiretroviral drug rilpivirine
2022
Risk stratification at primary care centres in Valencia (Spain) to activate integrated care pathways for elderly patients with chronic conditions
2017
Introduction: The activation of integrated care pathways is not always easy and is time-consuming, so the standardized use of stratification tools (ST) can support health care professionals in decision-making processes. Several ST –developed and validated in the United States– have been implemented in the Valencia Region (Spain) at primary care (PC) centres to identify elders with multimorbidity at risk of suffering future hospital admissions (FHA). In spite of the usefulness of these instruments, it would be recommended to apply STs which have been specifically designed on the basis of the Spanish healthcare system and the characteristics of its population. Thus, the objective of this stud…
Safety and immunogenicity of the therapeutic vaccine TG1050 in chronic hepatitis B patients: a phase 1b placebo-controlled trial
2020
Funding: Transgène; International audience; Treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) typically requires life-long administration of drugs. Cohort and pre-clinical studies have established the link between a functional T-cell-mounted immunity and resolution of infection. TG1050 is an adenovirus 5-based vaccine that expresses HBV polymerase and domains of core and surface antigen and has shown immunogenicity and antiviral effects in mice. We performed a phase 1 clinical trial to assess safety and explore immunogenicity and early efficacy of TG1050 in CHB patients. This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study included two sequential phases: one single dose cohort (SD, n = 12) and one …
