Measurement of the azimuthal ordering of charged hadrons with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a study of the possible ordering of charged hadrons in the azimuthal angle relative to the beam axis in high-energy proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A spectral analysis of correlations between longitudinal and transverse components of the momentum of the charged hadrons, driven by the search for phenomena related to the structure of the QCD field, is performed. Data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at center-of-mass energies of √s=900 GeV and √s=7 TeV. Measurement of hard double-parton interactions inW(???) + 2-jet events at $\sqrt{s}\,=7$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The production of W bosons in association with two jets in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=7 TeV has been analysed for the presence of double-parton interactions using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb[superscript −1], collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The fraction of events arising from double-parton interactions, f[superscript (D) over subscript DP], has been measured through the p[subscript T] balance between the two jets and amounts to f[superscript (D) over subscript DP] = 0.08 ± 0.01 (stat.) ± 0.02 (sys.) for jets with transverse momentum p[subscript T] > 20 GeV and rapidity |y| < 2.8. Psycholinguistic variables in visual word recognition and pronunciation of European Portuguese words: a mega-study approach

An increasing number of psycholinguistic studies have adopted a megastudy approach to explore the role that different variables play in the speed and/or accuracy with which words are recognised and/or pronounced in different languages. However, despite evidence for deep and shallow orthographies, little is known about the role that several orthographic, phonological and semantic variables play in visual word recognition and word production of words from intermediate-depth languages, as European Portuguese (EP). The present paper describes the Spanish Ambiguous Words (SAW) database, which comprises 210 words (133 polysemous and 77 homographs). Three-hundred and fifteen Spanish university students took part in the study on which SAW is based. First, subjective word meanings and senses were collected by means of a meaning retrieval task. Two judges then assigned participants’ responses to different categories of meaning according to lexicographical and statistical criteria. Income inequality, fiscal stimuli and political (in)stability

Using data for a large panel of countries, this paper investigates the role played by income inequality and fiscal stimuli episodes in shaping the likelihood of political stability. By means of Tobit estimations, we show that a rise in inequality increases the probability of government crises. However, such adverse distributional effect is reduced when expansionary or increasingly expansionary fiscal stimuli episodes or successful fiscal stimuli programs are put in place.
Can re-regulation of the financial sector strike back public debt?

This paper analyzes the impact of financial sector policy changes on the dynamics of public debt. Using a panel of 89 countries from 1973 to 2005, we find that while the implementation of (large) financial liberalisation policies significantly raises the public debt growth rate, the adoption of financial re-regulation measures leads to a mild reduction of public debt. Looking at the different typologies of financial sector policy changes, we show that stricter banking supervision, privatisations and restrictions to international capital flows contribute to a fast decline of the growth rate of public debt.
