The effect of a circular hole on the tensile strength of neat and filled rigid PUR foams

2015

Abstract In order to elucidate the effect of stress concentration on the tensile strength of rigid polyurethane (PUR) foams, specimens with open circular holes and different ratios of hole diameter to specimen width were tested in tension. The reduction in the net-section strength of the specimens with a center hole ranged from 1% to 18% for neat foams and from 18% to 28% for foams produced from a nanoclay-filled PUR. The finite fracture mechanics approach, based on simultaneous application of the strength and fracture mechanics criteria of failure, yielded a reasonably accurate prediction of foam strength in the presence of stress concentration.

Modulational instability processes in optical isotropic fibers under dual-frequency pumping

2001

Experiments are presented showing that under dual-frequency, circular polarization pumping, a host modulational instability processes can be generated in a single isotropic fiber, by carefully tuning the frequency spacing between the pumps.

Time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy

2009

The excellent time structure of Synchrotron radiation and short-pulse lasers has opened the door to a novel way of time-resolved imaging using PEEM. Periodic or repetitive processes can be studied by stroboscopic illumination with the pulsed photon beam. Since the first experiments in 2003, two fields of applications have been established in several groups. One concerns the investigation of fast magnetisation processes like precessional switching, Gigahertz-eigenmodes of ferromagnetic nanostructures or travelling spin waves in thin films. More recently, femtosecond lasers have been used for imaging of localised surface plasmons in nanoparticles and their temporal behaviour in the femtosecon…

Improved active fiber-based retroreflector with intensity stabilization and a polarization monitor for the near UV.

2021

We present an improved active fiber-based retroreflector (AFR) providing high-quality wavefront-retracing anti-parallel laser beams in the near UV. We use our improved AFR for first-order Doppler-shift suppression in precision spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen, but our setup can be adapted to other applications where wavefront-retracing beams with defined laser polarization are important. We demonstrate how weak aberrations produced by the fiber collimator may remain unobserved in the intensity of the collimated beam but limit the performance of the AFR. Our general results on characterizing these aberrations with a caustic measurement can be applied to any system where a collimated high-qual…

Multimodal nonlinear imaging of suspended carbon nanotubes using circular polarizations

2013

In this work, multimodal nonlinear microscopy of suspended CNTs using circular polarizations (CP) was reported. Significant variations in the SHG and THG signals of the CNTs between left hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right hand circular polarization (RHCP) were observed. The variations in the nonlinear signals can be associated to the unique properties of the CNTs such as chirality.

Polarization backward-wave four-wave mixing in BaTiO_3:Fe using the photovoltaic effect

1997

We report the first study to our knowledge of polarization backward-wave four-wave mixing in a BaTiO3:Fe crystal and compare the results of our measurements with the calculations performed within the model of photovoltaic charge transport. Two identically polarized pump waves and one orthogonally polarized signal wave are sent to a sample in a plane normal to the crystal’s C axis; a phase-conjugate wave with polarization identical to that of the signal wave is generated. With a 2-mm-thick sample a phase-conjugate reflectivity Rpc≈0.01 is reached; for a 1-cm-thick sample, amplified reflection should be possible.

Symmetry reduction of a model in spherical symmetry for benign tumor

2004

A PDEs system, describing the expansive growth of a benign tumor and the phe- nomenon of encapsulation, is studied via a group analysis approach. A weak equiv- alence classi¯cation is obtained and the original PDEs system is reduced to an ODEs system. Numerical simulations are performed both for ODEs and PDEs, which turn out to be in perfect agreement between each other, showing a realistic enough description of the biological process.

Study of the implementation of SPIF as a Reshaping strategy in terms of formability and accuracy performance

2022

The adaption of circular economy strategies has become increasingly necessary in current times. Researches need to be addressed on finding alternative processes or the modification of the existing processes in order to reprocess End-of-Life (EoL) components and consequently recover both materials and their functions. This research paper focuses on the use of single point incremental forming (SPIF) process for the Reshaping of sheet metal EoL components. Uniaxial and biaxial pre-straining was performed on AA5754 sheets to imitate an end-of-life component, and SPIF operations were carried out so as to obtain reshaped components. In previous works, the authors have proven the technical feasibi…

Biowaste in a circular bioeconomy in Mediterranean area: A case study of compost and vermicompost as growing substrates alternative to peat

2020

European policies are advocating a transition toward circular bio-economy, an economy aiming at reducing the dependence from fossil-based resources, limiting greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts. The aim of this paper is to assess the potential for circularity for bio-waste and related by-products, to highlight the role of compost and vermicompost in the circular bioeconomy and their use in the agricultural sector. Three different substrates were tested in the soilless cultivation of Salvia officinalis, a Mediterranean nutraceutical and healthy plant: vermicompost (40%), compost (40%) and peat (100%). The average values of the main biometric parameters were calculated and comp…

Evaluation of the Purity of Magnesium Hydroxide Recovered from Saltwork Bitterns

2022

Magnesium has been listed among the 30 critical raw materials by the European Union. In recent years, many green and sustainable alternative Mg2+ sources have been sought to satisfy the EU’s demand and to avoid mineral ore consumption. In this context, saltwork bitterns, the by-products of solar sea salt production, have attracted much attention thanks to their high Mg2+ concentrations (up to 80 g/L) and low Ca2+ and bicarbonate contents (<0.5 g/L). Although investigations on Mg2+ extraction from bitterns in the form of Mg(OH)2(s) have already been performed, product purity has never been properly addressed. Mg(OH)2(s) is a chemical compound of great interest and extensive utility in num…
