Previous work has indicated that the turnover of chloroplast ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1. 39) may be controlled by the redox state of certain cysteine residues. To test this hypothesis, directed mutagenesis and chloroplast transformation were employed to create a C172S substitution in the Rubisco large subunit of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The C172S mutant strain was not substantially different from the wild type with respect to growth rate, and the purified mutant enzyme had a normal circular dichroism spectrum. Archaeology, chronology, and age-diet insights of two late fourth millennium cal BC pit graves from central southern Iberia (Córdoba, Spain)

This study presents the isotopic ratios, radiocarbon datings, and anthropological analyses of five (N = 5) Early Copper Age individuals from two archaeological sites (Arruzafa and Iglesia Antigua de Alcolea) of the Middle Guadalquivir Valley near the city of Córdoba (Spain). Four had been buried in the same grave, possibly in a single event or in a very short time lapse. The collagen residue analyses of the individuals offer δC values ranging between −20.08 and −18.4 and δN values between 8.57 and 11.15. Element-Specific Magnetic and Electronic Properties of Epitaxial Heusler Films

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) provides an experimental access to element-specific electronic properties of thin epitaxial films of Heusler alloys. The combination of bulk-sensitive transmission and surface-sensitive electron yield methods reveals quantitative information on bulk and interface properties. Extreme cases of magnetically dead and life layers at interfaces illustrate the high potential of XMCD. The dependence of XMCD on disorder, structure and composition is discussed as well as dynamic properties investigated by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and XMCD. Primary structure and unusual carbohydrate moiety of functional unit 2-c of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH)

Abstract The complete amino acid sequence of the Megathura crenulata hemocyanin functional unit KLH2-c was determined by direct sequencing and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry of the protein, and of peptides obtained by cleavage with EndoLysC proteinase, chymotrypsin and cyanogen bromide. This is the first complete primary structure of a functional unit c from a gastropod hemocyanin. KLH2-c consists of 420 amino acid residues. Circular dichroism spectra indicated approx. 31% β-sheet and 29% α-helix contents. Sub-nanosecond resolution x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy of magnetization processes in a permalloy ring

Fast magnetization processes in a microstructured permalloy ring with 80 µm o.d. and 30 nm thickness have been observed by photoemission electron microscopy exploiting x-ray magnetic circular dichroism as the magnetic contrast mechanism. As a high speed probe we employed synchrotron radiation pulses at the ESRF (Grenoble) operated in 16-bunch mode, yielding photon pulses of 105 ps FWHM with a period of 176 ns. Quantitative measurements of magnetic stray field dynamics of Permalloy particles in a photoemission electron microscopy

By example of a Permalloy particle (40 × 40 μm(2) size, 30 nm thickness) we demonstrate a procedure to quantitatively investigate the dynamics of magnetic stray fields during ultrafast magnetization reversal. The measurements have been performed in a time-resolving photoemission electron microscope using the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In the particle under investigation, we have observed a flux-closure-dominated magnetic ground structure, minimizing the magnetic stray field outside the sample. Interactions of benzodiazepines with human serum albumin. Circular dichroism studies.

The circular dichroism spectra of 12 benzodiazepine derivatives studied in presence of human serum albumin are presented. Nearly all substances give biphasic extrinsic Cotton effects. At the CD maxima the molar ellipticities and the anisotropy factors are calculated. The influence of the chemical structure of the benzodiazepines on the induced Cotton effect is discussed. There is a linear correlation between the anisotropy factors and the logarithms of the partition coefficients of the substances. It is suggested that the phenyl ring of the benzodiazepine molecule is one of the essential groups for the binding of these substances to human serum albumin.
