Evaluation of plasma antioxidant status after red wine intake

2015

Several studies report that the plasma antioxidant capacity (PAC) increases after a single ingestion of red wine. However, data on the different behaviour of PAC after food intake in subjects of the same sex are still lacking. On the basis of these observations some investigations were undertaken in order to evaluate the effects of red wine intake on PAC in a homogeneous groups of healthy female volunteers (n=18). Additionally, the possible correlation between increase of PAC values and increase in uric acid levels was also assessed. PAC and uric acid concentrations were determined before wine intake and 50, 120 and 240 minutes thereafter. The results obtained following these studied highli…

Plasticity

2020

Although the expression πλαστική τέχνη [plastic art] has Greek origins, the derivative term “plasticity” enters the European languages only in the Modern Age. The term has a double meaning: it indicates, at the same time, the art of manipulating a ductile substance and the ability to transform oneself to recreate formal qualities in response to external events (positive meaning of plasticity) or to cancel pre-existing formal configurations, originating morphological novelties (negative meaning of plasticity). For this reason, the birthplace of plasticity is the domain of art but the term is used with different connotations also in the morphological, physicochemical and medical fields.

Transport of Antarctic stratospheric strongly dehydrated air into the troposphere observed during the HALO-ESMVal campaign 2012

2015

Abstract. Dehydration in the Antarctic winter stratosphere is a well-known phenomenon that is annually observed by satellites and occasionally observed by balloon-borne measurements. However, in situ measurements of dehydrated air masses in the Antarctic vortex are very rare. Here, we present detailed observations with the in situ and GLORIA remote sensing instrument payload aboard the German aircraft HALO. Strongly dehydrated air masses down to 1.6 ppmv of water vapor were observed as far north as 47° S in an altitude between 12 and 13 km in the lowermost stratosphere. The dehydration can be traced back to individual ice formation events above the Antarctic Peninsula and Plateau, where ice…

Measurement of top quark and W boson polarisation observables with t-channel single-top-quark events in the ATLAS experiment

2017

The implementation of new special education legislation in Finland

2014

This article examines the implementation of new special education legislation in Finland among students with significant disabilities. The data consist of a nationwide survey and field observations. In the analysis, a policy implementation framework is utilized as a theoretical lens. The findings suggest that schools and municipalities that had participated in long-term development projects had more capacity and willingness to reform special education practices substantially, suggesting that learning in one policy area can transfer to other domains across multiple levels of national and local governments. The key findings highlight the significance of professional trust as a policy instrum…

Od krytyki do czytelnictwa. Juliana Korhausera działalność krytycznoliteracka w pierwszej dekadzie XXI wieku

2015

The article is an attempt to recognize Julian Kornhauser’s critical idiom in the first decade of 21st century. The author takes steps to inscribe the critical project of The Inner World author into the congenial paradigm of the French thematic school (borders of empathy and identification, fascination and understanding, authenticity), and to pinpoint the basic ideas that Kornhauser’s critical thought circulates around (the issue of authenticity and identity of a poem persona and a critic).

Amphoteric, prevailingly cationic L-arginine polymers of poly(amidoamino acid) structure: Synthesis, acid/base properties and preliminary cytocompati…

2013

A linear amphoteric poly(amidoamino acid), L-ARGO7, is prepared by Michael-type polyaddition of L-arginine with N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide. Chain-extension of acrylamide end-capped L-ARGO7 oligomers with piperazine leads to high-molecular-weight copolymers in which L-arginine maintains its absolute configuration. Acid/base properties of L-ARGO7 polymers show isolectric points of ≈10 and positive net average charges per repeating unit at pH = 7.4 from 0.25 to 0.40. These arginine-rich synthetic polymers possibly share some of the unique biological properties of polyarginine cell-permeating peptides. In vitro tests with mouse embryo fibroblasts balb/3T3 clone A31 show that L-ARGO7 polymers a…

Halogen-Bonded Co-Crystals of Aromatic N-oxides : Polydentate Acceptors for Halogen and Hydrogen Bonds

2017

The C-ethyl-2-methylresorcinarene (1) forms 1:1 in-cavity complexes with aromatic N,N′-dioxides, only if each of the aromatic rings has an N−O group. The structurally different C-shaped 2,2′-bipyridine N,N′-dioxide (2,2′-BiPyNO) and the linear rod-shaped 4,4′-bipyridine N,N′-dioxide (4,4′-BiPyNO) both form 1:1 in-cavity complexes with the host resorcinarene in C4v crown and C2v conformations, respectively. In the solid state, the host–guest interactions between the 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane N,N′-dioxide (BiPyPNO) and the host 1 stabilize the unfavorable anti-gauche conformation. Contrary to the N,N′-dioxide guests, the mono-N-oxide guest, 4-phenylpyridine N-oxide (4PhPyNO), does not form an…
