Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are expected to become a fundamental element of the electricity infrastructure, thanks to their ability to decouple generation and demand over time. BESSs can also be used to store electricity during low-price hours, when the demand is low, and to meet the demand during peak hours, thus leading to savings for the consumer. This work focuses on the economic viability of BESS from the point of view of the electricity customer. Inclined rectangular weirs, also named pivot weirs, are used both to adjust the upstream water level and to increase the flow capacity compared with that of normal rectangular weirs. However, the experimental studies available in the literature present contradictory conclusions for the inclined weir discharge capacity. The role of extracellular polymeric substances on aerobic granulation with stepwise increase of salinity

Abstract A granular sequencing batch reactor (GSBR) worked for 164 days to study the effect of salinity on aerobic granulation. The feeding had an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.6 kg COD⋅m −3 ⋅d −1 and a gradual increase of salinity (from 0.30 to 38 g NaCl − ⋅L −1 ) to promote a biological salt-adaptation. First aggregates (average diameter ≈ 0.4 mm) appeared after 14 days. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) analyses revealed that proteins were mainly higher than polysaccharides, and microorganisms metabolized EPSs as additional carbon source, mostly in feast phase, to face the energy demand for salinity adaptation. Low-accuracy sensing is very common for the large hydraulic machines and does not allow for directly measuring the relative velocity which can be, otherwise, required for the control and monitoring purposes. Fractional-Order System Identification of Viscoelastic Behavior: A Frequency Domain Based Experimental Study

In this work, the fractional-order modeling of viscoelastic behavior is investigated based on measurement data in the frequency domain. For the results of two different test setups we apply existing parameter estimation algorithms designed for fractional-order transfer functions. These algorithms require a priori knowledge of the system structure including the commensurate order of differentiation. An iterative procedure is used to evaluate the influence of the unknown structure. The measured polymer samples show a viscoelastic stress response. Quasi-Static Displacement Self-Sensing Measurement for a 2-DOF Piezoelectric Cantilevered Actuator

This paper proposes a self-sensing measurement technique to perform the precise estimation of the displacements along two axes in a two-degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) piezoelectric actuator. For that, a new electrical circuit scheme that permits charge amplification is first proposed to match the different electrodes combination of the 2-DOF actuator. Then, a new bivariable observer that precisely estimates the displacements is calculated and implemented experimentally in a cascade with the electrical circuit to complete the self-sensing. Power losses in power-split CVTs: A fast black-box approximate method

Abstract This paper addresses the mechanical losses of planetary transmissions, with particular attention to power-split CVTs in their hybrid electric versions. It provides unified layout-independent analytical relationships, which can be used for both analysis, design and control purposes, and a simplified approach; the latter overcomes the necessity to segment the operating range of the power-split CVT in order to keep its loss model physically consistent. An example of application to a real hybrid electric PS-CVT is performed to show the simplicity, accuracy and generality of the proposed method.
Preventing the oil film instability in rotor-dynamics

Horizontal rotor systems on lubricated journal bearings may incur instability risks depending on the load and the angular speed. The instability is associated with the asymmetry of the stiffness matrix of the bearings around the equilibrium position, in like manner as the internal hysteretic instability somehow, where some beneficial effect is indeed obtainable by an anisotropic configuration of the support stiffness. Hence, the idea of the present analysis is to check if similar advantages are also obtainable towards the oil film instability. Abstract Friction Stir Extrusion is an innovative production technology that enables direct wire production via consolidation and extrusion of metal chips or solid billets. During the process, a rotating die is plunged into a cylindrical chamber containing the material to be extruded. The stirring action of the tool produces plastic flow in the extrusion chamber, densifying and heating the charge so that finally, fully dense rods are extruded. Experiments have been carried out in order to investigate the influence of process parameters and initial temper of the base material on the process variables and on the extrudates’ mechanical properties.
