Becton Dickinson Directigen EZ Flu A+B assay in the diagnosis of pandemic influenza A H1N1 2009 virus infection in adult patients

2011

To the editor: The recent emergence and spread of the pandemic influenza A H1N1 2009 virus demands the evaluation of rapid antigen assays for their ability to detect this novel subtype of influenza A virus. Data on the ability of BD Directigen EZ Flu A+B immunochromatographic (IC) assay (Beckton Dickinson and Company, Sparks, MD, USA) to detect the pandemic influenza A virus strain in fresh clinical samples have been recently published. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 In these studies, the majority of specimens were collected from pediatric patients, and the sensitivities reported ranged from 46·8% to 76·6%. As viral shedding in the upper respiratory tract during influenza virus infection is of greater m…

Columnar supramolecular architecture of crystals of 2-(4-Iodophenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline derived from values of intermolecular interaction energy

2011

Using results of X-ray diffraction study supramolecular architecture of crystals of 2-(4-iodophenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline has been analyzed on the basis of quantum-chemical calculations of intermolecular interactions energy. It is demonstrated that these crystals have three levels of organization. Molecules form stacked dimers with the highest binding energy (first level). These dimers represent basic unit of infinite columns stabilized by stacking interactions between dimers (second level). The energy of intermolecular interactions between neighbouring stacked columns is very close. This does not allow to figure out any layers in the crystal. Therefore crystals of this compound have columna…

Exploring the “Cozy Cabal of Academics, Dealers and Collectors” through the Schøyen Collection

2020

In the wake of the trade in ancient materials, several ethical and political issues arise that merit concern: The decimation of the cultural heritage of war-torn countries, proliferation of corruption, ideological connotations of orientalism, financial support of terrorism, and participation in networks involved in money laundering, weapon sales, human trafficking and drugs. Moreover, trafficking and trading also have a harmful effect on the fabric of academia itself. This study uses open sources to track the history of the private Sch&oslash

Flavonoids as noncompetitive inhibitors of Dengue virus NS2B-NS3 protease: Inhibition kinetics and docking studies

2014

NS2B-NS3 is a serine protease of the Dengue virus considered a key target in the search for new antiviral drugs. In this study flavonoids were found to be inhibitors of NS2B-NS3 proteases of the Dengue virus serotypes 2 and 3 with IC50 values ranging from 15 to 44 μM. Agathisflavone (1) and myricetin (4) turned out to be noncompetitive inhibitors of dengue virus serotype 2 NS2B-NS3 protease with Ki values of 11 and 4.7 μM, respectively. Docking studies propose a binding mode of the flavonoids in a specific allosteric binding site of the enzyme. Analysis of biomolecular interactions of quercetin (5) with NT647-NHS-labeled Dengue virus serotype 3 NS2B-NS3 protease by microscale thermophoresis…

Perioperative nonspecific histamine release : a new classification by aetiological mechanisms and evaluation of their clinical relevance

1993

As a consequence of the performance of a randomized controlled clinical trial on perioperative histamine release and cardiovascular and respiratory disturbances, several types of increases in plasma histamine had to be distinguished instead of only two which existed at the beginning of the study: drug-induced allergic and pseudoallergic reactions. First of all, the new classification by aetiology (clinical epidemiology) was derived from a meta-analysis (secondary analysis) of the most recent literature. According to that histamine release in the perioperative period has several, different causes and is involved in several, different disease manifestations. A clear distinction (classificatio…

Adaptive PI Control of Bottom Hole Pressure during Oil Well Drilling

2018

Abstract In this paper, we studied the bottom hole pressure (BHP) control in an oil well during drilling. Today marginal wells with narrow pressure windows are frequently being drilled. This requires accurate and precise control to balance the bottom hole pressure between the pore and fracture pressure of the reservoir. This paper presents three control schemes to stabilize the BHP prole, including proportional-integral(PI) control, PI with feed-forward control and adaptive PI with feed-forward control. The proposed schemes are carried out through simulations on a high-fidelity hydraulic drilling simulator for flow rate changes and BHP set-point changes. In fast set-point changes and flow r…

Padure (Beltes) piliakalnio (Latvija) osteologinė medžiaga: rūšių pasiskirstymas ir skerdimo technologija

2013

In the excavated Padure (Beltes) hill-fort in Latvia, cultural layers from the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age (Stage 1), and the Middle Iron Age and the Late Iron Age (Stage 2), were detected, which, besides the archaeological material typical of that period, provided abundant zooarchaeological material. This article presents the investigation data from the zooarchaeological material of both stages: the data relate to the butchering techniques used, and the identification of the composition of the faunal species. The investigation was carried out in the bioarchaeological laboratory of the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology at Klaipėda University. As is proven by the …

Radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors with small electrodes for High Luminosity LHC

2019

Abstract The upgrade of the tracking detectors for the High Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC) requires the development of novel radiation hard silicon sensors. The development of Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors targets the replacement of hybrid pixel detectors with radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors. We designed, manufactured and tested radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors in the TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging technology with small electrodes pixel designs. These designs can achieve pixel pitches well below current hybrid pixel sensors (typically 50 ×  50 μ m ) for improved spatial resolution. Monolithic sensors in our design allow to reduce multiple scattering by thinning to a total si…

Electrostatic Tuning of the Ligand Binding Mechanism by Glu27 in Nitrophorin 7

2018

AbstractNitrophorins (NP) 1–7 are NO-carrying heme proteins found in the saliva of the blood-sucking insect Rhodnius prolixus. The isoform NP7 displays peculiar properties, such as an abnormally high isoelectric point, the ability to bind negatively charged membranes, and a strong pH sensitivity of NO affinity. A unique trait of NP7 is the presence of Glu in position 27, which is occupied by Val in other NPs. Glu27 appears to be important for tuning the heme properties, but its influence on the pH-dependent NO release mechanism, which is assisted by a conformational change in the AB loop, remains unexplored. Here, in order to gain insight into the functional role of Glu27, we examine the ef…
