Formulation and test of an ice aggregation scheme for two-moment bulk microphysics schemes

A simple formulation of aggregation for 2-moment bulk microphysical models is de-rived. The solution involves the evaluation of a double integral of the collection kernelweighted with the crystal size (or mass) distribution. This quantity is to be inserted intothe differential equation for the crystal number concentration which has classical form. The double integrals are evaluated numerically for log-normal size distributions overa large range of geometric mean masses. A polynomial fit of the results is given thatyields good accuracy. Various tests of the new parameterization are described: aggre-gation as stand-alone process, in a box-model, and in 2-D simulations of a cirrostratuscloud. …

Pseudo-abelian integrals: Unfolding generic exponential case

The search for bounds on the number of zeroes of Abelian integrals is motivated, for instance, by a weak version of Hilbert's 16th problem (second part). In that case one considers planar polynomial Hamiltonian perturbations of a suitable polynomial Hamiltonian system, having a closed separatrix bounding an area filled by closed orbits and an equilibrium. Abelian integrals arise as the first derivative of the displacement function with respect to the energy level. Reference-point-independent dynamics of molecular liquids and glasses in the tensorial formalism.

We apply the tensorial formalism to the dynamics of molecular liquids and glasses. This formalism separates the degrees of freedom into translational and orientational ones. Using the Mori-Zwanzig projection formalism, the equations of motion for the tensorial density correlators S(lmn,l'm'n')(q-->,t) are derived. For this we show how to choose the slow variables such that the resulting Mori-Zwanzig equations are covariant under a change of the reference point of the body fixed frame. We also prove that the memory kernels obtained from mode-coupling theory (MCT) including all approximations preserve the covariance. Zeros of {-1,0,1}-power series and connectedness loci for self-affine sets

We consider the set W of double zeros in (0,1) for power series with coefficients in {-1,0,1}. We prove that W is disconnected, and estimate the minimum of W with high accuracy. We also show that [2^(-1/2)-e,1) is contained in W for some small, but explicit e>0 (this was only known for e=0). These results have applications in the study of infinite Bernoulli convolutions and connectedness properties of self-affine fractals.

Generalised power series solutions of sub-analytic differential equations

Abstract We show that if a solution y ( x ) of a sub-analytic differential equation admits an asymptotic expansion ∑ i = 1 ∞ c i x μ i , μ i ∈ R + , then the exponents μ i belong to a finitely generated semi-group of R + . Singularity formation and separation phenomena in boundary layer theory

In this paper we review some results concerning the behaviour of the incompressible Navier–Stokes solutions in the zero viscosity limit. Most of the emphasis is put on the phenomena occurring in the boundary layer created when the no-slip condition is imposed. Numerical simulations are used to explore the limits of the theory. We also consider the case of 2D vortex layers, i.e. flows with internal layers in the form of a rapid variation, across a curve, of the tangential velocity.

Analytical techniques for the determination of bismuth in solid environmental samples

Abstract Bismuth is a trace element of the Earth’s crust, which is becoming environmentally significant. Although bismuth has relatively low toxicity, it can form characteristic intracytoplasmatic inclusions. This article illustrates the increasing need for fast pre-treatment techniques and highly sensitive detection methods for accurate measurements of bismuth at extremely low concentrations in solid environmental matrices.

Pre-treatment with high doses of cocaine decreases the reinforcing effects of cocaine in the conditioned place preference paradigm.

The aim of the present study was to determine if pre-exposure to high doses of cocaine can subsequently alter the rewarding effects of this drug. Adult male mice received a pretreatment of physiological saline, or 12.5 or 25 mg/kg of cocaine (one injection a day for five days). After an interval of six days without injections, the rewarding effects of low doses of cocaine (0.5, 1 or 1.5 mg/kg) were evaluated in the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Doses of 1 and 1.5 mg/kg induced a clear CPP in animals pre-treated with saline but were ineffective in those pre-treated with 25 mg/kg of cocaine. Only the dose of 1.5 mg/kg induced CPP in mice pre-treated with 12.5 mg/kg of cocaine. …
