Coronal Loops: Observations and Modeling of Confined Plasma

2010

Coronal loops are the building blocks of the X-ray bright solar corona. They owe their brightness to the dense confined plasma, and this review focuses on loops mostly as structures confining plasma. After a brief historical overview, the review is divided into two separate but not independent sections: the first illustrates the observational framework, the second reviews the theoretical knowledge. Quiescent loops and their confined plasma are considered, and therefore topics such as loop oscillations and flaring loops (except for non-solar ones which provide information on stellar loops) are not specifically addressed here. The observational section discusses loop classification and popula…

Quantum Probes for the Characterization of Nonlinear Media

2021

Active optical media leading to interaction Hamiltonians of the form H=λ˜(a+a†)ζ represent a crucial resource for quantum optical technology. In this paper, we address the characterization of those nonlinear media using quantum probes, as opposed to semiclassical ones. In particular, we investigate how squeezed probes may improve individual and joint estimation of the nonlinear coupling λ˜ and of the nonlinearity order ζ. Upon using tools from quantum estimation, we show that: (i) the two parameters are compatible, i.e., the may be jointly estimated without additional quantum noise

Estudio comparativo de dos metodologías aplicadas para la comprensión de la música contemporánea en la educación secundaria obligatoria

2016

In this paper we try to discover which methodology is more appropriate for the comprehension of the contemporary music in the Secondary Education. For that purpose by a quasi-experiment, mixed, qualitative and quantitative, the preserved results through the application of two different methodologies have been compared: a traditional one base on the masterly class and another based in different kinds of audition. The obtained results after the didactical application on the quantitative level weren´t significant, however, on the qualitative level we could also observe that the pupils who subjected to that methodology had more advantageous results regarding to the comprehension of the contempo…

Review of Classical Non-self-adjoint Spectral Theory

2019

The first section of this chapter deals with Fredholm theory in the spirit of Appendix A in Helffer and Sjostrand (Mm Soc Math Fr (NS) 24–25:1–228, 1986), see also an appendix in Melin and Sjostrand (Asterique 284:181–244, 2003) and Sjostrand and Zworski (Ann Inst Fourier 57:2095–2141, 2007). The remaining sections give a brief account of the very beautiful classical theory of non-self-adjoint operators, taken from a section in Sjostrand (Lectures on Resonances) which is a brief account of parts of the classical book by Gohberg and Krein (Introduction to the Theory of Linear Non-Selfadjoint Operators. Translations of Mathematical Monographs, vol 18. AMS, Providence, 1969).

Solid sediment transport in turbulent channel flow over irregular rough boundaries

2017

Abstract The presence of a loading of dispersed particles in a turbulent flow affects the dynamics of the carrier flow field which, in turn, drives grains movement. The focus of the paper is on the analysis of the coupling effects between near-bed turbulence structures and the dynamics of dispersed suspended solid particles in wall-bounded turbulent multiphase flows. We consider turbulent horizontal channel flows bounded by rough boundaries. The friction Reynolds number of the unladen flow is R e τ = 180 and the dispersed phase spans one order of magnitude of particle diameter. To analyze sedimentation and suspended phase transport, we adopt concepts and modeling ideas derived from the Eule…

On the order of indeterminate moment problems

2013

For an indeterminate moment problem we denote the orthonormal polynomials by P_n. We study the relation between the growth of the function P(z)=(\sum_{n=0}^\infty|P_n(z)|^2)^{1/2} and summability properties of the sequence (P_n(z)). Under certain assumptions on the recurrence coefficients from the three term recurrence relation zP_n(z)=b_nP_{n+1}(z)+a_nP_n(z)+b_{n-1}P_{n-1}(z), we show that the function P is of order \alpha with 0<\alpha<1, if and only if the sequence (P_n(z)) is absolutely summable to any power greater than 2\alpha. Furthermore, the order \alpha is equal to the exponent of convergence of the sequence (b_n). Similar results are obtained for logarithmic order and for more ge…

Are compliance constants ill-defined descriptors for weak interactions?

2013

Just as the potential energy can be written as a quadratic form in internal coordinates, so it can also be expanded in terms of generalized forces. The resulting coefficients are termed compliance constants. In this article, the suitability of compliance constants as non-covalent bond strength descriptors is studied (a) for a series of weakly bound hydrogen halide–rare gas complexes applying a configuration interaction theory, (b) for a double stranded DNA 4-mer using approximate density functional methods and finally (c) for a double stranded DNA 20-mer using empirical force fields. Our results challenge earlier studies, which concluded the inappropriateness of compliance constants as soft…
