Continuity of the maximal operator in Sobolev spaces
2006
We establish the continuity of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on Sobolev spaces W 1,p (R n ), 1 < p < ∞. As an auxiliary tool we prove an explicit formula for the derivative of the maximal function.
Novel approach to study the perception of animacy in dogs.
2017
Humans tend to perceive inanimate objects as animate based on simple motion cues. So far this perceptual bias has been studied mostly in humans by utilizing two-dimensional video and interactive displays. Considering its importance for survival, the perception of animacy is probably also widespread among animals, however two-dimensional displays are not necessarily the best approach to study the phenomenon in non-human species. Here we applied a novel method to study whether dogs recognize a dependent (chasing-like) movement pattern performed by inanimate agents in live demonstration. We found that dogs showed more interest toward the agents that demonstrated the chasing-like motion, compar…
Développement humain et loi log-périodique
2002
We suggest applying the log-periodic law formerly used to describe various crisis phenomena, in biology (evolutionary leaps), inorganic systems (earthquakes), societies and economy (economic crisis, market crashes) to the various steps of human ontogeny. We find a statistically significant agreement between this model and the data.
EnglishOpinions on the pauperism of Camus are influenced by his knowledge of classical antiquity, but his proposals are in the line of Catholic social thought that begins to conform in France from 1840. Camus is among the first scholars in Spain to expose the ideas of the main ideologists of this ideological current.
Introduction to the English Edition: Birth and Development of an Institutionalist Theory of Money
2020
For a long time, books were the medium of diffusion favoured by researchers seeking to expound their approaches and their findings. The book format enabled authors to unfold their ideas gradually, to debate the arguments advanced by their contemporaries and to situate themselves precisely relative to their predecessors.
Are high-temperature fractionations in the solar nebula preserved in highly siderophile element systematics of the Earth's mantle?
2004
The relative abundances of the highly siderophile elements (HSE) Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, Rh, and Pd in relatively pristine lherzolites differ from solar abundance ratios and are several orders of magnitude higher than predicted for equilibrium distribution between metal/silicate (core-mantle). The samples are characterized by a mean Ca/Al ratio of 1.18 ± 0.09 σM and a mean Ca/Si ratio of 0.10 ± 0.01 σM, overlapping with a mean Ca/Al of 1.069 ± 0.044 σM and a mean Ca/Si of 0.081 ± 0.023 σM found in chondrites (Wasson and Kallemeyn 1988). Interestingly, the CI-normalized abundance pattern shows decreasing solar system normalized abundances with increasing condensation temperatures. The abundance of …
Bill2d - a software package for classical two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems
2015
Abstract We present Bill2d , a modern and efficient C++ package for classical simulations of two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Bill2d can be used for various billiard and diffusion problems with one or more charged particles with interactions, different external potentials, an external magnetic field, periodic and open boundaries, etc. The software package can also calculate many key quantities in complex systems such as Poincare sections, survival probabilities, and diffusion coefficients. While aiming at a large class of applicable systems, the code also strives for ease-of-use, efficiency, and modularity for the implementation of additional features. The package comes along with a use…
Non-stationary pre-envelope covariances of non-classically damped systems
1991
Abstract A new formulation is given to evaluate the stationary and non-stationary response of linear non-classically damped systems subjected to multi-correlated non-separable Gaussian input processes. This formulation is based on a new and more suitable definition of the impulse response function matrix for such systems. It is shown that, when using this definition, the stochastic response of non-classically damped systems involves the evaluation of quantities similar to those of classically damped ones. Furthermore, considerations about non-stationary cross-covariances, spectral moments and pre-envelope cross-covariances are presented for a monocorrelated input process.
Field-portable Mössbauer spectroscopy on Earth, the Moon, Mars, and beyond
2011
ABSTRACT Iron occurs naturally as Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , and, to a lesser extent, as Fe 0 . Many fundamental (bio)geochemical processes are based on redox cycling between these oxidation states. Mossbauer spectroscopy provides quantitative information about the distribution of Fe among its oxidation states, identification of Fe-bearing phases, and relative distribution of Fe among those phases. Portable, miniaturised Mossbauer spectrometers were developed for NASA9s Mars Exploration Rovers (in operation since 2004) and provide a means for non-destructive, in-situ field investigations. On Mars, these instruments provided evidence for aqueous activity with implications for habitability, were applied…
