Disrupting neural activity related to awake-state sharp wave-ripple complexes prevents hippocampal learning

2012

Oscillations in hippocampal local-field potentials (LFPs) reflect the crucial involvement of the hippocampus in memory trace formation: theta (4–8 Hz) oscillations and ripples (~200 Hz) occurring during sharp waves are thought to mediate encoding and consolidation, respectively. During sharp wave-ripple complexes (SPW-Rs), hippocampal cell firing closely follows the pattern that took place during the initial experience, most likely reflecting replay of that event. Disrupting hippocampal ripples using electrical stimulation either during training in awake animals or during sleep after training retards spatial learning. Here, adult rabbits were trained in trace eyeblink conditioning, a hippoc…

Learning English through and for singing : learner experiences of the interrelation of music and language

2015

Intrinsic Lipschitz Graphs and Vertical β-Numbers in the Heisenberg Group

2016

The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study some basic concepts of quantitative rectifiability in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$. In particular, we aim to demonstrate that new phenomena arise compared to the Euclidean theory, founded by G. David and S. Semmes in the 90's. The theory in $\mathbb{H}$ has an apparent connection to certain nonlinear PDEs, which do not play a role with similar questions in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Our main object of study are the intrinsic Lipschitz graphs in $\mathbb{H}$, introduced by B. Franchi, R. Serapioni and F. Serra Cassano in 2006. We claim that these $3$-dimensional sets in $\mathbb{H}$, if any, deserve to be called quantitatively $3$-rectifi…

Spectral multipliers and wave equation for sub-Laplacians: lower regularity bounds of Euclidean type

2018

Let $\mathscr{L}$ be a smooth second-order real differential operator in divergence form on a manifold of dimension $n$. Under a bracket-generating condition, we show that the ranges of validity of spectral multiplier estimates of Mihlin--H\"ormander type and wave propagator estimates of Miyachi--Peral type for $\mathscr{L}$ cannot be wider than the corresponding ranges for the Laplace operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$. The result applies to all sub-Laplacians on Carnot groups and more general sub-Riemannian manifolds, without restrictions on the step. The proof hinges on a Fourier integral representation for the wave propagator associated with $\mathscr{L}$ and nondegeneracy properties of the sub…

Il balaneion dell'agorà di Solunto

2019

Ettore Gabrici, who first excavated the structure located in the northwest corner of Solunto’s agora in 1920-21, identified the remains as part of a thermal bath, despite missing some of the key elements which usually characterize this type of buildings (hypocaust, praefurnium, heating pipes). After the re-examination of the architectural elements, this paper suggests a different interpretation which takes into account archaeological evidences from the broader Mediterranean context (especially from Sicily and the Punic world). The results here presented could actively contribute to a better understanding of the hydraulic engineering in Sicily during the Hellenistic Period. As a matter of fa…

The Relationship Between Musical Structure and Emotion in Classical Piano Scores : A Case Study on the Theme of La Folia

2017

We explored the relationship between musical structure and emotion on different variations of La Folia – a musical theme of Portuguese origin based on a standard harmonic progression. Our approach aims to extend previous research by investigating more factors and comparing different models for music emotion. In a pilot study, 12 participants rated the emotion associated to the stimuli on a graduate scale from 1 to 10, according to 3 different models for music emotion: the valence/arousal-based emotion model (Russell, 1980), a discrete emotion approach (Izard, 1972), and the Geneva Emotional Music Scale (GEMS) (Zentner et al., 2008). Stimuli were commercial recordings of the first 8 bars of …

Self-Consistent Charge Density-Functional Tight-Binding Parametrization for Pt–Ru Alloys

2017

We present a self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) parametrization for PtRu alloys, which is developed by employing a training set of alloy cluster energies and forces obtained from Kohn-Sham density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Extensive simulations of a testing set of PtRu alloy nanoclusters show that this SCC-DFTB scheme is capable of capturing cluster formation energies with high accuracy relative to DFT calculations. The new SCC-DFTB parametrization is employed within a genetic algorithm to search for global minima of PtRu clusters in the range of 13-81 atoms and the emergence of Ru-core/Pt-shell structures at intermediate alloy compositions, consi…

Federaliści i rozłam między klasycznością a modernością

2014

The article shows how the classical political thinking, based on civic virtues, and modernist thinking, based on individualism and self-interest, formed the basis of the U.S. Constitution. The Founding Fathers did not realize the full extent of the rift between classicism and modernity. When, as a result of intellectual discussions and practice of social life, this divide began to become more and more obvious, there has been a transition from the classical to the modernist paradigm in American politics. However, the dispute between classicism and modernity still continues and takes on new forms. On the one hand, contemporary political thinking is seen as a triumph of modernism, in which the…

BUILDING THE PROJECT TEAM AND PROJECT ORGANIZATION – CHALLENGES AND OBSTACLES

2011

The building of a project team can be one of the first hurdles the future team manager faces. The blame for this can be constraints in terms of resources to fund salaries, lack of adequate or properly trained personnel, unavailability of specialists the manager needs within the project in the period this is scheduled, but also other causes. The building of a project team process must also correlated with its future structure, the two components influencing each other in both directions. Choosing an appropriate structure for the project to be implemented is not only necessary, but, moreover, may prove fatal to the extent that is not obtained.
