The mathematical formalism of category theory allows to investigate musical structures at both low and high levels, performance practice (with musical gestures) and music analysis. Mathematical formalism can also be used to connect music with other disciplines such as visual arts. In our analysis, we extend former studies on category theory applied to musical gestures, including musical instruments and playing techniques. Some basic concepts of categories may help navigate within the complexity of several branches of contemporary music research, giving it a unitarian character. Este artículo se basa en la idea de cómo la comunicación musical activa no solo elementos musicales sino culturales y sociales. Como práctica social, la música muestra tanto su poder comunicativo como los límites de la comunicación (entendida como un intercambio de mensajes y significados). En este sentido, el ruido se presenta como un factor de disrupción en el circuito semiótico y en las relaciones sociales. La cuestión del ruido se trata como un aspecto liminar del sonido y la música, como puede observarse en diversos ejemplos tomados de la vanguardia (ruidismo) hasta la música popular contemporánea (noise), pasando por géneros musicales particulares como el punk-rock o la música tecno.
Can hydrophobic interactions be correctly reproduced by the continuum models?

The ability of the continuum models to describe hydrophobic interactions is investigated. In this work we have studied the interactions between two methane molecules in aqueous solution by means of a continuum model. The resulting potential of mean force is in good agreement with those obtained using Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics techniques. The three energy contributions appearing in the continuum energy partition (electrostatic, dispersion−repulsion, and cavitation) have been analyzed. Recently, we looked more closely into the Rabinovich–Fabrikant system, after a decade of study [Danca & Chen, 2004], discovering some new characteristics such as cycling chaos, transient chaos, chaotic hidden attractors and a new kind of saddle-like attractor. In addition to extensive and accurate numerical analysis, on the assumptive existence of heteroclinic orbits, we provide a few of their approximations.

Reduced gravitational force strongly weakens the buoyancy convection, so the convective oscillations in the melt become impossible [1]. Charged colloidal particles in a charged wedge: do they go in or out?

Using real-space microscopy experiments, theory and computer simulation, we study the behaviour of highly charged colloidal particles which are confined between two highly charged plates forming a wedge geometry. Under low salt conditions it is experimentally observed that colloidal particles accumulate in the cusp of a wedge to form dense fluid or crystalline ordered structures. This behaviour is found for various cell geometries, salt concentrations and gravitational strengths, and even stays stable when additional convection is present in the system. We have developed a detailed mathematical model and numerical simulation tools based on the streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) finite element formulation for the Czochralski silicon crystal growth. In this paper we consider the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of the time-dependent melt flow and temperature field in a rotationally symmetric crystal growth environment. Abstract The onset of natural convection in a vertical porous cylinder saturated by a fluid is studied. The lateral confinement of the porous cylinder is due to an external porous medium having a permeability much smaller than that of the cylinder. Thus, the vertical side boundary of the cylinder is permeable and constrained by given pressure and temperature distributions. The lower and upper plane boundaries of the cylinder are impermeable walls. The lower wall is subject to a uniform heat flux, while the upper wall has a uniform temperature.
