Contextualizing Unguru’s 1975 Attack on the Historiography of Ancient Greek Mathematics

In 1975 S. Unguru published his controversial paper on the need to rewrite the history of ancient Greek mathematics. The origin of the paper is sketched according to Unguru’s own story, and then the paper is contextualized in some of the historiographic and disciplinary discussions and shifts taking place during the decade before its publication. The focus is not only on the history of (Greek) mathematics (J. Klein , A. Szabo , M. S. Mahoney ), but a rather broad approach is taken to capture the wider (U.S.-American, academic) discourse around questions of professionalisation of history of science/mathematics. The reconstruction of ensemble d–f of the Akhmîm Papyrus, better known as the Strasbourg Papyrus, which attests approximately eighteen of the over seventy new lines of Empedocles’ physical poem, has drawn the attention of scholars over recent years. Thanks to the good condition of the papyrus and the coincidence with two Empedoclean lines, already known from the indirect tradition, ensemble d–f 1–10a presents a well-restored text and an intelligible sense. In contrast, because of the damaged state of the papyrus, the restoration of d–f 10b–18 is more complicated. La Antígona de Fenicias o la larga sombra de la Antígona de Sófocles

La sombra de la Antígona de Sófocles ha mediatizado la transmisión e interpretación de las Fenicias de Eurípides. Tres pasajes de Fenicias proyectan en conjunto la imagen de una Antígona muy humana y de una gran entereza de ánimo, próxima al personaje de Sófocles. El primero, la teichoscopía del prólogo; el segundo, una escena central, vv. 1264‑1283, preludio del último estásimo. En el tercero, formado por dos escenas, vv. 1480‑1539 y 1540‑1580, el protagonismo de Antígona es notable y revelador de su carácter. La ausencia del primero, cuya autenticidad ha sido cuestionada, privaría a la Antígona de Fenicias de unos rasgos de carácter que en conjunto hacen de ella un personaje muy humano.

The Bavarian J. A. Schmeller hoped that the Swiss educational reformer Pestalozzi would appoint him as a teacher. When this failed, he joined the Swiss military in Spanish services carrying out Pestalozzi's principles at military schools by teaching languages in Tarragona and Madrid, and, finally, at a private teaching institute in Basle. He was inspired by the Swiss dialect dictionary when he decided to make a Bavarian dialect dictionary and, based on this, a Bavarian dialect grammar. This was the beginning of German scientific dialectology. He was appointed member of the Bavarian Academy of Science and professor at Munich university. By comparing Heracles in the grip of madness to a furious bull assailing its prey, the tragedian clearly shows the inexorability of the divine will and its arbitrariness, and emphasizes madness itself through images traditionally associated with the bull. This survey provides a sort of ‘counterpoint’ to the way in which the history of research has actually gone. In reaction to the ‘Religionsgeschichtliche Schule’, nowadays the Jewish origins of NT Christology are usually pointed out. But when we pay attention to its ‘reception’ in Greco-Roman culture, some of the old findings may still prove useful. This article seeks to check this, taking into account especially the alternative models of explanation offered by the ‘New Religionsgeschichtliche Schule’.

Curial and Guelfa, by an unknown author, is a chivalric romance written in a realistic style. Planned within the medieval tradition, although infl uenced by Italian Humanism, it was composed in fluent Catalan, but subject to several linguistic and cultural interferences. It was probably conceived and written in Italy in the decade of 1440. The author not only knows deeply the courteous volgare language, but also the literary one (especially Boccaccio), with which he enriches a Catalan language probably learnt in Valencia. The Byzantine Scholia to Aristotle and Empedocles’ Cosmic Cycle

Abstract Some Byzantine scholia to Aristotle offer numerical indications on the time-length of some phases of Empedocles’ cosmic cycle. In recent years an interpretation has become established, according to which the scholia pro-vide evidence for a cycle with three periods: the Sphairos and two opposite phases of Love’s and Strife’s unfolding. This paper emphasizes, in contrast, that the picture of the cycle we can draw from the scholia is not as clear-cut as generally supposed. On the contrary, the scholia can be adapted to dif-ferent, even contrasting, reconstructions of the Empedoclean cycle.
