Climate and extreme rainfall events in the Mono river basin (West Africa): investigating future changes with Regional Climate Models.
2020
This study characterizes the future changes in extreme rainfall and air temperature in the Mono river basin where the main economic activity is weather dependent and local populations are highly vulnerable to natural hazards, including flood inundations. Daily precipitation and temperature from observational datasets and Regional Climate Models (RCMs) output from REMO, RegCM, HadRM3, and RCA were used to analyze climatic variations in space and time, and fit a GEV model to investigate the extreme rainfalls and their return periods. The results indicate that the realism of the simulated climate in this domain is mainly controlled by the choice of the RCMs. These RCMs projected a 1 to 1.5 °
Statistical analysis of very high-resolution precipitation data and relation to atmospheric circulation in Central Germany
2019
The cumulative occurrence of heavy precipitation and flood events during recent years in various Central European locations emphasises the urgent need to improve extreme rainfall observations and forecasts. Precipitation gauges based on a weighing system allow the recording of intense short-term precipitation events with a very high temporal resolution (down to 1 min). In this study, observational data that were collected during the period 2000 to 2016 for 126 stations of two corresponding measuring networks in the Central German state of Hesse were investigated for the first time to answer the following questions: (1) Are the recorded high-resolution precipitation data plausible and…
Approaching electrical tomography
2009
A general approach to electrical tomography is here described, based on the distribution of the experimental data to the set of voxels in which the subsoil has been divided. This approach utilizes the sensitivity coefficients as factors of the convolution procedure to execute the back projection of the data, to obtain the 3D pictures of the subsoil. A subsequent probabilistic filtering technique is described to improve the pictures in view of sharp boundary models. Some models are finally presented, mostly regarding cubic buried anomalies as well as pipe-shaped and L-shaped anomalies.
”Juhannuksena sää saattaa olla lämmin” : Mitä sanomalehtien sääkirjoitukset kertovat suomalaisten suhteesta säähän ja ilmastoon?
2020
Major loss of coralline algal diversity in response to ocean acidification
2021
[Abstract] Calcified coralline algae are ecologically important in rocky habitats in the marine photic zone worldwide and there is growing concern that ocean acidification will severely impact them. Laboratory studies of these algae in simulated ocean acidification conditions have revealed wide variability in growth, photosynthesis and calcification responses, making it difficult to assess their future biodiversity, abundance and contribution to ecosystem function. Here, we apply molecular systematic tools to assess the impact of natural gradients in seawater carbonate chemistry on the biodiversity of coralline algae in the Mediterranean and the NW Pacific, link this to their evolutionary h…
2019
Powdery mildew, one of the most widespread grapevine disease, causes damage to the plant foliage, reduces yields and altersquality of grapes. This fungus development is strongly controlled by climate conditions and viticulture requires in many regionslarge quantities of pesticides for disease control. Projecting the impacts of climate change on these disease and developinga better understanding of future disease risk is crucial, given the increasing societal pressure for pesticide reduction andsustainability. This study focused on (i) the elaboration of an empirical model that establishes links between monthly climate dataand annual powdery mildew pressure in Champagne and (ii) the use of t…

2002
In order to evaluate for the vineyard, the additional risk of freezing, which could be generated by a railway embankment of the High Speed Line (TGV «Paris-Strasbourg») a canvas cover of the future embankment (length 480 m, height 3 m maxi) was drawn up in the bottom of a wineyard slope. Measurements of Actinothermal Index (AI) Temperatures, at the height of the bud (at 50 cm of the surface) and measurements of of cold air windslopes, were carried out on a microclimatic scale. We recorded 19 points of measurements, without then with the presence of the canvas cover, for the nights characterized by a radiative cooling (wind £ 2m.s-2, clear sky) during spring 2001. The possible incidence of t…
