Spatially resolved observation of dynamics in electrical and magnetic field distributions by means of a delayline detector and PEEM

2005

Abstract Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) was exploited to observe the dynamics in local field distributions on microstrip-line devices with a best time resolution of 133 ps. A delayline detector system served as imaging unit capable of a time resolving data acquisition and processing. The setup can be operated at the resolution limit of the PEEM of about 20 nm while a continuously illuminating UV-lamp excites the photoelectrons in threshold photoemission. A pulsed photon source is not needed to obtain time resolved images, the time reference of the data acquisition was taken by a periodic signal (clock, here typ. 100 MHz) in phase with the pulse pattern applied to the microstrip-li…

Comparison of complex fractionated atrial electrograms at cellular scale using numerical and experimental models.

2010

This study investigates the existence of the pseudo complex fractionated atrial electrogram (CFAE) at cellular level. Our assumptions are based on the fact that CFAEs are linked to the generation of the spiral waves. These are created using a numerical model and an experimental model of in vitro culture of neonatal rats cardiac cells. Pseudo bipolar electrograms resulting from these two models are compared qualitatively and some patterns could be identified as CFAE signature.

Rollvection versus linearvection: Comparison of brain activations in PET

2004

We conducted a PET study to directly compare the differential effects of visual motion stimulation that induced either rollvection about the line of sight or forward linearvection along this axis in the same subjects. The main question was, whether the areas that respond to vection are identical or separate and distinct for rollvection and linearvection. Eleven healthy volunteers were exposed to large-field (100 degrees x 60 degrees ) visual motion stimulation consisting of (1) dots accelerating from a focus of expansion to the edge of the screen (forward linearvection) and (2) dots rotating counterclockwise in the frontal plane (clockwise rollvection). These two stimuli, which induced appa…

Direct detection of the elusive 229thorium isomer: Milestone towards a nuclear clock

2017

Recently, the first direct detection of the long-searched low-lying isomeric first excited state of 229Th could be realized via its internal conversion decay branch, which confirms the isomer's existence and lays the foundation for precise studies of its decay parameters, in particular its half-life and excitation energy. Follow-up studies confirmed the theoretically expected lifetime reduction by about 109 of neutral 229mTh compared to charged isomers with τ∼10 μS thus emphasizing the need to efficiently suppress internal conversion when aiming for the detection of a potential photonic decay branch of 229mTh. Work towards precisely determining the excitation energy of the thorium isomer is…

Ortho-H2 and the age of prestellar cores

2013

Prestellar cores form from the contraction of cold gas and dust material in dark clouds before they collapse to form protostars. Several concurrent theories exist to describe this contraction but they are currently difficult to distinguish. One major difference is the timescale involved in forming the prestellar cores: some theories advocate nearly free-fall speed via, e.g., rapid turbulence decay, while others can accommodate much longer periods to let the gas accumulate via, e.g., ambipolar diffusion. To tell the difference between these theories, measuring the age of prestellar cores could greatly help. However, no reliable clock currently exists. We present a simple chemical clock based…

Tunable liquid lens equipped virtual reality adapter for scientific, medical, and therapeutic goals

2018

We adapted virtual reality appliances to use them in scientific medical diagnostics and therapeutic aims by incorporated as part of appliance ocular system two electrically tunable Optotune liquid lenses, controllable by computer USB ports within 20D range. In present time we used the appliance to investigate the mono- and/or binocularly illusory perception dominances (Shapiro and al;2008), nonlinearities caused by controversial Gestalt recognition of motion. Back layer of stimuli elements contained internal motion sources - clockwise spinning disk on neutral background. Disk consisted of centrosymmetric radial rays which luminance was sinus mode modulated along the disc circumference. Spin…

Dynamic Phase Diagram of the REM

2019

International audience; By studying the two-time overlap correlation function, we give a comprehensive analysis of the phase diagram of the Random Hopping Dynamics of the Random Energy Model (REM) on time-scales that are exponential in the volume. These results are derived from the convergence properties of the clock process associated to the dynamics and fine properties of the simple random walk in the $n$-dimensional discrete cube.

Circadian rhythms in ischaemic heart disease

2022

Abstract Circadian rhythms are internal regulatory processes controlled by molecular clocks present in essentially every mammalian organ that temporally regulate major physiological functions. In the cardiovascular system, the circadian clock governs heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac metabolism, contractility, and coagulation. Recent experimental and clinical studies highlight the possible importance of circadian rhythms in the pathophysiology, outcome, or treatment success of cardiovascular disease, including ischaemic heart disease. Disturbances in circadian rhythms are associated with increased cardiovascular risk and worsen outcome. Therefore, it is important to consider circadian rhy…

Conflicting molecular phylogenies of European long-eared bats (Plecotus) can be explained by cryptic diversity

2002

Abstract Conflicting phylogenetic signals of two data sets that analyse different portions of the same molecule are unexpected and require an explanation. In the present paper we test whether (i) differential evolution of two mitochondrial genes or (ii) cryptic diversity can better explain conflicting results of two recently published molecular phylogenies on the same set of species of long-eared bats (genus Plecotus). We sequenced 1714 bp of three mitochondrial regions (16S, ND1, and D-loop) of 35 Plecotus populations from 10 European countries. A likelihood ratio test revealed congruent phylogenetic signals of the three data partitions. Our phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that the exis…
