Adjusting Software Revenue and Pricing Strategies in the Era of Cloud Computing

2016

Competitive forces shape software revenue and pricing models in cloud computing.Different revenue and pricing models lead to different competitive strategies.Software firms apply mixed revenue models, or a hybrid pricing mechanism.Software renting provides flexibility for software providers against competition.Software architecture may either limit possibilities for different revenue models. Recent research has recognized cloud computing as a new paradigm of servitization in which software products are offered based on service contracts. Thus, instead of selling software licenses, software vendors can rent software as a service to customers. However, it is still unclear how software provide…

Comparison of different revenue models in SaaS

2012

Cloud computing brings new possibilities for software firms to sell their products within a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. However, although SaaS provides new revenue models, it may not easily achieve a profitable revenue stream. For customers, SaaS promises cost savings related to IT expenses. However, it may be difficult to estimate which revenue model will be best for a given situation. In this paper I present the common revenue models used in SaaS, examining their advantages and disadvantages from the point of view of the software provider and the customer. Evaluation of an Educational Video Production Environment

2019

In this paper, a cloud-based solution for the easy production and meaningful distribution of video-based learning material is presented and evaluated. Using this system, lecturers can produce video material with their own computers anywhere, at any time. The system enables the production of longer lecture videos as well as short videos, each containing only one of the course's topics. The system also handles video sharing for students automatically in a meaningful way through the course's table of contents. An evaluation of the first production version of the video production and distribution system was carried out by collecting qualitative material from the lecturers and students.

Abstract. In-situ ice crystal size distribution measurements are presented within the tropical troposphere and lower stratosphere. The measurements were performed using a combination of a Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP-100) and a Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), which were installed on the Russian high altitude research aircraft M55 "Geophysica" during the SCOUT-O3 campaign in Darwin, Australia. One of the objectives of the campaign was to characterise the Hector convective system, which appears on an almost daily basis during the pre-monsoon season over the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin. In total 90 encounters with ice clouds, between 10 and 19 km altitude were selected from the dat…

Vertical grid refinement for stratocumulus clouds in the radiation scheme of a global climate model

2021

Abstract. In this study, we implement a vertical grid refinement scheme in the radiation routine of the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM-HAM, aiming to improve the representation of stratocumulus clouds and address the underestimation of their cloud cover. The scheme is based on a reconstruction of the temperature inversion as a physical constraint for the cloud top. On the refined grid, the boundary layer and the free troposphere are separated and the cloud's layer is made thinner. The cloud cover is re-calculated either by conserving the cloud volume (SC-VOLUME) or by using the Sundqvist cloud cover routine on the new grid representation (SC-SUND). In global climate simulations, we find…

Abstract. This study uses the EMAC atmospheric chemistry-climate model to simulate cloud properties and estimate cloud radiative effects induced by aerosols. We have tested two prognostic cloud droplet nucleation parameterizations, i.e., the standard STN (osmotic coefficient model) and hybrid (HYB, replacing the osmotic coefficient by the κ hygroscopicity parameter) schemes to calculate aerosol hygroscopicity and critical supersaturation, and consider aerosol–cloud feedbacks with a focus on warm clouds. Both prognostic schemes (STN and HYB) account for aerosol number, size and composition effects on droplet nucleation, and are tested in combination with two different cloud cover parameteriz…

Effects of model configuration for superparametrised long-term simulations – Implementation of a cloud resolving model in EMAC (v2.50)

2019

Abstract. A new module has been implemented in the ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) Model that simulates cloud related processes on a much smaller grid. This so called superparametrisation acts as a replacement for the convection parametrisation and large-scale cloud scheme. The concept of embedding an ensemble of cloud resolving models (CRMs) inside of each grid box of a general circulation model leads to an explicit representation of cloud dynamics. The new model component is evaluated against observations and the conventional usage of EMAC using a convection parametrisation. In particular, effects of applying different configurations of the superparametrisation are analyzed in a…

Size Matters More Than Chemistry for Cloud-Nucleating Ability of Aerosol Particles

2006

Size-resolved cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) spectra measured for various aerosol types at a non-urban site in Germany showed that CCN concentrations are mainly determined by the aerosol number size distribution. Distinct variations of CCN activation with particle chemical composition were observed but played a secondary role. When the temporal variation of chemical effects on CCN activation is neglected, variation in the size distribution alone explains 84 to 96% of the variation in CCN concentrations. Understanding that particles' ability to act as CCN is largely controlled by aerosol size rather than composition greatly facilitates the treatment of aerosol effects on cloud physics in re…

Global Understanding Environment: Towards Self-managed Web of Everything

2012

Current Web grows rapidly to several directions (from the Web of Documents to the Webs of Humans, Things, Services, Knowledge, Intelligence, etc.). Consequently the recent and future Web-based applications, systems and frameworks (like, e.g., Social and Ubiquitous Computing, SOA and Cloud Computing, etc.) should take into account challenges related to extremely high heterogeneity of components and exponentially increased complexity of a business logic connecting and making them interoperable. Enabling self-management enhanced with semantic technology seems to be an only option to handle that. We suggest adding a "virtual representative" to every resource in the Web to solve the global inter…
