Analyzing the security of Windows 7 and Linux for cloud computing
2013
We review and analyze the major security features and concerns in deploying modern commodity operating systems such as Windows 7 and Linux 2.6.38 in a cloud computing environment. We identify the security weaknesses and open challenges of these two operating systems when deployed in the cloud environment. In particular, we examine and compare various operating system security features which are critical in providing a secure cloud. These security features include authentication, authorization and access control, physical memory protection, privacy and encryption of stored data, network access and firewalling capabilities, and virtual memory.

Abstract. The growth of small cloud droplets and ice crystals is dominated by the diffusion of water vapor. Usually, Maxwell's approach to growth for isolated particles is used in describing this process. However, recent investigations show that local interactions between particles can change diffusion properties of cloud particles. In this study we develop an approach for including these local interactions into a bulk model approach. For this purpose, a simplified framework of local interaction is proposed and governing equations are derived from this setup. The new model is tested against direct simulations and incorporated into a parcel model framework. Using the parcel model, possible i…
IT Technology Implications Analysis on the Occupational Risk: Cloud Computing Architecture
2014
Abstract The present paper is divided into three major areas: the analysis of occupational risk implications at national and international level, the European priorities in terms of occupational risk and the existing cloud computing services. Since human resource is present within each organization, it is required a comprehensive and actual assessment of the processes in which they participate. Like in any daily activity, processes and people contribute to the emergence of risks. If each organization creates healthy and safe workplaces that means that it contributes to the sustainable development of the area in which it operates. It can be said that occupational risk assessment and occupati…

3-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Interaction of a Supernova Remnant Shock with an Isolated Cloud
2006
We report on a computational key-project in astrophysics. The project is aimed at studying the interaction of a supernova shock wave with interstellar clouds. We describe the numerical code used, namely FLASH, a multi-dimensional astrophysical hydrodynamics code for parallel computers developed at the FLASH center (The University of Chicago); our team collaborates with, and contributes to, the FLASH project. We discuss the resources required for the whole project, the I/O management, the performance and the scalability of the code on IBM/Sp4 at CINECA. Finally, we present a selection of results. © 2005 IEEE.
Transferring deep learning models for cloud detection between Landsat-8 and Proba-V
2020
Abstract Accurate cloud detection algorithms are mandatory to analyze the large streams of data coming from the different optical Earth observation satellites. Deep learning (DL) based cloud detection schemes provide very accurate cloud detection models. However, training these models for a given sensor requires large datasets of manually labeled samples, which are very costly or even impossible to create when the satellite has not been launched yet. In this work, we present an approach that exploits manually labeled datasets from one satellite to train deep learning models for cloud detection that can be applied (or transferred) to other satellites. We take into account the physical proper…
Mobile cloud computing educational tool for image/video processing algorithms
2011
This paper shows the importance and benefit of coupling cloud computing with mobile especially due to power limitations that mobile devices exhibit. Moreover, the work done shows that mobile computing can be applied for educational purposes, where a tool for students termed Mobi4Ed is presented. This educational tool aims at exploiting the concept of cloud computing in the context of image and video processing, where students can assess several algorithms in real-time. Two possible system architectures are detailed, where one uses the cellular channel and the other uses the data channel. Consequently, one of the approaches is adopted and a detailed simulation is done where an Android client…
Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation and User Scheduling for Collaborative Mobile Clouds With Hybrid Receivers
2016
In this paper, we study the resource allocation and user scheduling algorithm for minimizing the energy cost of data transmission in the context of OFDMA collaborative mobile cloud (CMC) with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) receivers. The CMC, which consists of several collaborating MTs offers one potential solution for downlink con- tent distribution and for the energy consumption reduction at the terminal side. Meanwhile, as RF signal can carry both informa- tion and energy simultaneously, the induced SWIPT has gained much attention for energy efficiency design of mobile nodes. Previous work on the design of CMC system mainly focused on the cloud formulation o…

Reproducing cloud microphysical and irradiance measurements using three 3D cloud generators
2007
Using three cloud generators, three-dimensional (3D) cloud fields are reproduced from microphysical cloud data measured in situ by aircraft. The generated cloud fields are used as input to a 3D radiative transfer model to calculate the corresponding fields of downward and upward irradiance, which are then compared with airborne and ground-based radiation measurements. One overcast stratocumulus scene and one broken cumulus scene were selected from the European INSPECTRO field experiment, which was held in Norwich, UK, in September 2002. With these data, the characteristics of the three different cloud reproduction techniques are assessed. Besides vertical profiles and histograms of measured…
