Health Promotion Interventions in Sports Clubs: Can We Talk About a Setting-Based Approach? A Systematic Mapping Review
2019
Many researchers and authorities have recognized the important role that sports clubs can play in public health. In spite of attempts to create a theoretical framework in the early 2000s, a thorough understanding of sports clubs as a setting for health promotion (HP) is lacking. Despite calls for more effective, sustainable, and theoretically grounded interventions, previous literature reviews have identified no controlled studies assessing HP interventions in sports clubs. This systematic mapping review details how the settings-based approach is applied through HP interventions in sports clubs and highlights facilitators and barriers for sports clubs to become health-promoting settings. In…

Sport organizations and crime: indissoluble binomial? A sociological and economic analysis for possible solutions
2011
The fundamental principles which should guide the activities of football teams are contaminated by criminal phenomena that produce, as the main effect, the loss of confidence from the fans. The reasons of the crisis of credibility in the sports organizations are both economic and social. This seems paradoxical in light of the circumstances under which: under the social profile has demonstrated a negative correlation between sport and widespread crime; under economic profile, the soccer is the one sport that is characterized by consistent and staggering increases in turnover. Modern society facilitates the scenario described above, because it is fragmented and characterized by dynamic proces…
Applying health promoting sports club standards in the Netherlands
2014
This study explores health promotion activity of Dutch sports clubs by using the Health Promoting Sports Clubs (HPSC) standards, which are developed in Finland and here applied to the Dutch sports context. The standards consist of 23 items which cover different perspectives on health promotion. The standards form an overall HPSC index, which is used to create health promotion profiles for the sports clubs. 17 sports clubs from the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch participated in this study, of which 42 club officials (1-6 per club) evaluated their own club on all HPSC standards on a five-point Likert scale. Per club, the average score on each standard was calculated. The average on the HPSC…
Resting electrocardiogram and blood pressure in young athletes and nonathletes : A 4-year follow-up
2022
A follow-up data on electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure (BP) changes in adolescent athletes are scarce. We compared ECG and BP between adolescent athletes and non-athletes in a 4-year follow-up. A total of 154 youth sports clubs (SC) in Finland and 100 secondary schools for comparison data participated in this observational follow-up study. Those who maintained or adopted SC participation are referred to as “Always athletes” (n=137), those who never participated in SC as “Never athletes” (n=108) and those who dropped out of SC during the follow-up as “Changers” (n=116). The mean age of the participants was 15.5 (0.6) years in all study groups at baseline. Resting ECG including heart …
Brand social representations: strategic perspectives for a fitness club
2009
International audience; The aim of this study was to identify an accurate tool to enable fitness club managers to discover those opinions or stereotypes which represent obstacles to joining their organisations. Starting with brand image, the analysis then considered social representations as relevant constructs for apprehending these opinions or prejudices. The use of a word association task and the model of basic cognitive schemes (Rouquette, 1990; 1994) provided access to the salient elements of the social representations of a particular sport brand and the way they are structured. The procedure combining these two stages represented a diagnostic tool for identifying the attractive and un…
Measuring Health Promotion in Sports Club Settings: A Modified Delphi Study
2019
Settings-based approaches have become an increasing health promotion focus since the World Health Organization’s 1986 Ottawa Charter. While schools, cities, and prisons have implemented this approach, its development within sports environments is recent. Sports are a popular leisure-time activity, requiring validated tools to measure health promotion activity. This study’s aim was to develop a measurement tool based on international consensus that measures perceptions of health promotion within sports clubs. It is grounded in the settings-based approach and builds on theory from previous works expanding their context and knowledge. An online, three-round international Delphi study was cond…

Health promoting sports federations : theoretical foundations and guidelines
2023
Background: Researchers and policy-makers have highlighted that the potential for organized sports to promote health has been underexploited. Sports clubs have limited capacity to promote health due to their voluntary nature and have called for support from their national sports federations. The present article provides guidelines, based on the theoretical principles of health promoting sports clubs and an analysis of practical tools and proven strategies, to support national sports federations to invest in health promotion (HP). Methods: A qualitative iterative study was undertaken, based on five 2-h meetings of a group of 15 international researchers in HP in sports clubs. Notes and minut…
Julkiset palvelutuotantotehtävät suomalaisten liikuntaseurojen muodonmuutosten lähteenä
2022
Lähestymme tutkimusaihettamme vertailemalla kahdeksaa julkiseen palvelutuotantoon paikallisesti sitoutunutta liikuntaseuraa. Tutkimusaineistomme koostuu tapaustutkimusseurojen to…
