Multivariate geophysical survey to detect a shallow fault zone in a landfill project area

2018

An integrated analysis of 2D high-resolution shallow seismic refraction tomographies (SRT) and electrical resistivity tomographies (ERT) has been carried out along a slope where the presence of a fault zone was assumed. It was also applied a post-inversion k-means cluster analysis of the P-wave velocity, the density of the seismic rays and the electrical resistivity of the interpretation models. Distribution maps of the cluster in multi-space were built, allowing to better definethe lateral geometry of a NE-SW directed band composed of intensely tectonized carbonate breccias. Finally, the fracturing and kinematic analysis on fault planes observed along the trenches, highlighted systems of l…

Mercury$$^\mathrm{\textregistered }$$: A Software Based on Fuzzy Clustering for Computer-Assisted Composition

2019

We present Mercury, a new software for computer-assisted composition based on fuzzy clustering algorithms. This software is able to generate a big number of transitions between any two different melodies, harmonic progressions or rhythmical patterns. Mercury works with symbolic music notation. The software is, therefore, able to read music and to export the generated musical production into MusicXML format. This paper focusses on some theoretical aspects of the CFT algorithm implemented in the software in order to create those complete transitions, overviewing not only the structure of the program but the user’s interface and its music notation module. Finally, the wide variety of compositi…

Melatonin and phytomelatonin: Chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, distribution and bioactivity in plants and animals—an overview

2021

Melatonin is a ubiquitous indolamine, largely investigated for its key role in the regulation of several physiological processes in both animals and plants. In the last century, it was reported that this molecule may be produced in high concentrations by several species belonging to the plant kingdom and stored in specialized tissues. In this review, the main information related to the chemistry of melatonin and its metabolism has been summarized. Furthermore, the biosynthetic pathway characteristics of animal and plant cells have been compared, and the main differences between the two systems highlighted. Additionally, in order to investigate the distribution of this indolamine in the plan…

Clustering-Based Algorithm for Connectivity Maintenance in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

2014

International audience; Among recent advances in wireless communication technologies' field, Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) have drawn the attention of both academic and industry researchers due to their potential applications including driving safety, entertainment, emergency applications, and content sharing. VANET networks are characterized by their high mobile topology changes. Clustering is one of the control schemes used to make this global topology less dynamic. It allows the formation of dynamic virtual backbone used to organize the medium access, to support quality of service and to simplify routing. Mainly, nodes are organized into clusters with at least one cluster head (CH) …

Improving the Performance Metric of Wireless Sensor Networks with Clustering Markov Chain Model and Multilevel Fusion

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/783543 Open access The paper proposes a performance metric evaluation for a distributed detection wireless sensor network with respect to IEEE 802.15.4 standard. A distributed detection scheme is considered with presence of the fusion node and organized sensors into the clustering and non-clustering networks. Sensors are distributed in clusters uniformly and nonuniformly and network has multilevel fusion centers. Fusion centers act as heads of clusters for decision making based on majority-like received signal strength (RSS) with comparis…

Clustering Bacteria Species Using Neural Gas: Preliminary Study

2009

In this work a method for clustering and visualization of bacteria taxonomy is presented. A modified version of the Batch Median Neural Gas (BNG) algorithm is proposed. The BNG algorithm is able to manage non vectorial data given as a dissimilarity matrix. We tested the modified BNG on the dissimilarity matrix obtained from sequences alignment and computing distances using bacteria genotype information regarding the16S rRNA housekeeping gene, which represents a stable part of bacteria genome. The dataset used for the experiments is obtained from the Ribosomal Database Project II, and it is made of 5159 sequences of 16S rRNA genes. Preliminary results of the experiments show a promising abil…

Structural Analyses in the Study of Anxiety and Anxiety-Related Behaviour

2016

According to the latest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, anxiety encompasses various conditions sharing an excessive sense of fear and/or apprehension for no evident reason and related behavioural disturbances (Association, 2013). The association of such a gloomy symptomatology, with the great diffusion in the general population, explains the critical impact of anxiety disorders on inter-personal relationships and job-related activities (Greenberg et al.,1999; Wittchen & Hoyer, 2001; Keeley & Storch, 2009). Hence, anxiety disorders represent an important and consistent topic of discussion, not only in terms of underlying neuro-psychological processes but, …

Comparative analysis of eight cytotoxicity assays evaluated within the ACuteTox Project.

2013

A comparative analysis of eight cytotoxicity assays [the 3T3 and normal human keratinocytes Neutral Red Uptake (NRU) assay, the primary rat hepatocytes, human HepG2 and 3T3 MU assay, and the human A.704, SH-SY5Y and HepG2 cells propidium iodide (PI) assay] included in several work packages of the EU Integrated Project ACuteTox, has been carried out. The aim was to evaluate whether cells originating from liver, kidney and brain provided different in vitro acute toxicity results, and the influence of primary liver cells versus cell lines originated from the same tissue. Spearman rank correlation analysis and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis were performed based on the IC50 (50% inhibitory concen…

Metabolic profiling reveals distinct variations linked to nicotine consumption in humans--first results from the KORA study.

2008

Exposure to nicotine during smoking causes a multitude of metabolic changes that are poorly understood. We quantified and analyzed 198 metabolites in 283 serum samples from the human cohort KORA (Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg). Multivariate analysis of metabolic profiles revealed that the group of smokers could be clearly differentiated from the groups of former smokers and non-smokers. Moreover, 23 lipid metabolites were identified as nicotine-dependent biomarkers. The levels of these biomarkers are all up-regulated in smokers compared to those in former and non-smokers, except for three acyl-alkyl-phosphatidylcholines (e.g. plasmalogens). Consistently significant r…

Population genetics of cucumber mosaic virus infecting medicinal, aromatic and ornamental plants from northern Italy

2012

An epidemiological survey carried at the Herb Garden of Casola Valsenio (Emilia Romagna region; Northern Italy) from 2006 to 2009 resulted in finding Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) as the infectious agent of several ornamental, medicinal and aromatic plants. All CMV-infected plant species showed leaf symptoms followed, in some cases, by flower colour-breaking and stunting. Genetic analysis consisted in the characterization of movement protein gene of each CMV-isolate by single strand polymorphism analysis and sequencing. Phylogenetic trees identified only two isolates as member of subgroup II, while all other isolates were part of subgroup IA. This survey confirms an unexpected increment of CM…
