Benign intracranial hypertension associated to blood coagulation derangements

2006

Abstract Background Benign Intracranial Hypertension (BIH) may be caused, at least in part, by intracranial sinus thrombosis. Thrombosis is normally due to derangements in blood coagulation cascade which may predispose to abnormal clotting activation or deficiency in natural inhibitors' control. The aim of the study is to examine the strength of the association between risk factors for thrombosis and BIH. Patients and methods The incidence of prothrombotic abnormalities among a randomly investigated cohort of 17 patients with BIH, was compared with 51 healthy subjects matched for sex, age, body mass index, height and social background. Results The number of subjects with protein C deficienc…

MODIFICATION OF COAGULATION IMBALANCE DURING ANTITHROMBIN TREATMENT IN PREECLAMPTIC PATIENTS: OUR EXPERIENCE

2008

Preeclamptic conditions are often associated with a natural inhibitor consumption. Many studies have evidenced validity of antithrombin (AT) treatment during preeclamptic conditions. The aim of the study is to restore a congruous coagulation imbalance with administration of AT under the guide of thromboelastographic monitoring (TEG).

Octaplex in routine clinical use for prophylaxis and therapy of bleeding in patients with prothrombin complex factor deficiency

2007

Octaplex is a new prothrombin complex concentrate that is indicated for treatment or perioperative prophylaxis of bleeding in patients with deficiency of the prothrombin complex coagulation factors, such as deficiency caused by treatment with vitamin K antagonists or by liver failure, when rapid correction of bleeding is required. The study was conducted to demonstrate both prevention of bleeding and achievement of haemostasis in acute bleeding and to obtain further information about the safety of administration of Octaplex.

Thrombin generation in cardiovascular disease and mortality – results from the Gutenberg Health Study

2020

Thrombin generation may be a potential tool to improve risk stratification for cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the relation between thrombin generation and cardiovascular risk factors, cardiovascular diseases, and total mortality. For this study, 5,000 subjects from the population-based Gutenberg Health Study were analyzed in a highly standardized setting. Thrombin generation was assessed by the Calibrated Automated Thrombogram method at 1 and 5 pM tissue factor triggers in platelet-poor plasma. Lag time, endogenous thrombin potential, and peak height were derived from the thrombin generation curve. Sex-specific multivariable linear regression analysis adjusted…

Platelet Aggregation, Coagulation and Fibrinolysis at Rest and after Bicycle Ergometer Test in CHD

1980

Several observers have suggested that a dysfunction of dynamic balance between platelet aggregation, coagulation and fibrinolysis may be a factor in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. This dysfunction, presumably, is correlated with the atherosclerotic vascular lesions, that could reduce the parietal synthesis of heparan-sulphase, prostacyclin and plas minogen activator.

c.451dupT in KLKB1 is common in Nigerians, confirming a higher prevalence of severe prekallikrein deficiency in Africans compared to Europeans

2020

Essentials Prekallikrein (PK) deficiency is a recessive trait with isolated aPTT prolongation. KLKB1 c.451dupT is common in Nigerians (7/600 alleles) and absent in a European group (0/600). To date, all genotyped PK-deficient patients of African ancestry were homozygous for 451dupT. Diagnostics of isolated aPTT prolongation in African descendants should include PK testing. ABSTRACT: Background Severe prekallikrein deficiency (PK deficiency) is an autosomal-recessive condition thought to be very rare. Recently we reported that the previously unnoticed variant c.451dupT, p.Ser151Phefs*34 in KLKB1, which is listed in databases aggregating genome data, causes PK deficiency and is common in Afri…

Hemostasis in brain tumor surgery using the Aquamantys system

2014

Background: Adequate hemostasis in cranial and spinal tumor surgery is of paramount importance in neurosurgical practice. Generalized ooze bleeding from the surgical walls cavity, coming from neoplastic vessels or nervous tissue, may be problematic. Recent technical advances have dramatically reduced intraoperative complications related to blood loss. Several techniques are usually employed to control hemostasis in tumor surgery, including preoperative embolization, intraoperative hypotension, electrical coagulation, and local application of fibrin sealants or hemostatic matrix, which influence coagulation. Material/Methods: Our aim in this study was to evaluate the efficacy and the safety …

Retinal vein occlusion: current treatment.

2010

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a pathology noted for more than 150 years. Although a lot has been written on the matter, it is still a frequent condition with multifactorial etiopathogenesis with many unclear aspects. The RVO pathogenesis has varied systemic and local implications that make it difficult to elaborate treatment guidelines. The management of the patient with RVO is very complex and a multidisciplinary approach is required in order to identify and correct the associated risk factors. Laser therapy remains the gold standard in RVO, but only modest functional improvement has been shown in branch retinal occlusion forms. Multicenter studies of intravitreal drugs present them as a…
