On the Trustworthiness of Error-Correcting Codes

The use of error-correcting codes protects data against accidental or intentional errors, but to what extent can a decoded message be trusted? To answer this question, one has to take the role of the receiver. First, the maximum number of errors Lambda acceptable for decoding is fixed. With the weight distribution, the probability of false decoding can be calculated, conditioned on such a Lambda-bounded strategy. This probability is a monotonously increasing function in the channel error probability p and in the maximum number of accepted errors Lambda. We propose a low complexity analog joint source channel coding Multiple Description (MD) scheme for transmitting the symbols of a Gaussian source across a pair of independent AWGN channels. The outputs of these channels have each a separated receiver, whereas a third receiver has both outputs available. At the transmitter side, a pair of bandwidth-reduction analog mappings are used for joint source-channel coding. The present paper looks at the potential of the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and its underlying basis in attachment theory for use in psychotherapeutic work. We summarize the basic tenets of attachment theory, detail the content and structure of the AAI, provide instructions for conducting the AAI, and introduce the Main et al. (2002) coding system. We then report on associations between AAI-Attachment groups and psychosomatic diseases and, finally, demonstrate applications of the AAI in clinical work and research.
Cloning and sequencing of the chicken egg-white avidin-encoding gene and its relationship with the avidin-related genes Avrl-Avr5

Abstract The gene encoding chicken egg-white avidin (Avd) was amplified from chromosomal DNA, cloned and sequenced. The entire coding region of preavidin (pre-Avd) containing four exons was identified by comparing the Avd gene (1119 bp) with the cDNA. It had a high identity percentage (91–95%) with the previously isolated Avd-related genes 1–5 (Avrl–Avr5) . Interestingly, comparison of Avd with the Avr genes showed that the introns were better conserved (on average 97%) than the exons (90%). The Avd gene, as well as the cDNA, encodes a Gln residue at position 53 of the mature protein, which is in contrast to the previously determined amino-acid sequence.

This paper describes the design and performance of a secraphone that, when plugged between any conventional telephone set and the public telephone network, protects the speech information travelling through the PSTN. The device has a transparent operating mode that does not alter the signal and a secure mode, accessed upon request of any of the speakers, that encrypts the speech with digital techniques, assuring privacy against unwanted listeners.
