Coffee Intake and Liver Steatosis: A Population Study in a Mediterranean Area
2018
Coffee drinking seems to have several beneficial effects on health outcomes. However, the effect on hepatic steatosis, depending on a high alcohol consumption (AFLD, alcoholic fatty liver disease) or on metabolic factors (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD), is still equivocal. Thus, we aimed to explore the potential association between coffee consumption and the presence and severity of hepatic steatosis in people with NAFLD or AFLD. In this cross-sectional study, coffee drinking was recorded using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and categorized as yes vs. no and as 0, 1, 2, ≥3. The degree of fatty liver was assessed through a standardized ultrasound examination (sc…
Coffee and its chemopreventive components Kahweol and Cafestol increase the activity of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase in rat liver—compariso…
2003
Abstract A lower rate of colon cancer was observed in consumers of coffee with a high content of the diterpenes Kahweol and Cafestol (K/C). In animal models, K/C have been found to protect against the mutagenic/carcinogenic effects of compounds such as 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), aflatoxin B1, and 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene. Thus far, such chemoprotection by K/C has been attributed to modifications of xenobiotic metabolism, e.g. enhanced detoxification by UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UDPGT) and/or glutathione transferase (GST). In the present study, we investigated the potential of several coffee-related treatments (K/C [1:1], Cafestol-alone, Turkish coffee) …
Total polyphenol excretion and blood pressure in subjects at high cardiovascular risk.
2011
Background and aims Dietary factors are critical for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, but data on the effects of specific nutrients on blood pressure (BP) are scarce. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between total polyphenol excretion (TPE) in urine, as an objective measurement of total polyphenol intake and BP in an elderly population at high cardiovascular risk. Methods and results Cross-sectional substudy of 589 high-risk participants entering in the PREDIMED trial. BP was measured and TPE was determined in urine by Folin–Ciocalteu assay. A significant positive association was observed between TPE in urine and daily intake of fruit and vegetables (F&V), c…
High-birth weight and other risk factors for Wilms tumour: results of a population-based case-control study.
2001
Wilms tumour, or nephroblastoma, is one of the childhood cancers included in two recent population-based case-control studies in West Germany. Altogether, 177 children under the age of 10 years with Wilms tumour diagnosed between 1988 and 1994 and 2006 control children sampled from population registration files participated. Information on potential risk factors was obtained from the parents using a questionnaire and by subsequent telephone interview. We found an association with a high birth weight >4000 g (odds ratio 1.58; 95% confidence interval 1.01–2.48), which was somewhat stronger for children aged 2 years or older. Findings for young maternal age at birth and certain parental occupa…
Dietary intake and major food sources of polyphenols in a Spanish population at high cardiovascular risk: the PREDIMED study.
2013
[Background and aims]: Epidemiological data have shown an inverse association between the consumption of polyphenol-rich foods and the risk of cardiovascular disease or overall mortality. A comprehensive estimation of individual polyphenol intake in nutritional cohorts is needed to gain a better understanding of this association. The aim of this study was to estimate the quantitative intake of polyphenols and the major dietary sources in the PREDIMED (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) cohort using individual food consumption records. [Methods and results]: The PREDIMED study is a large, parallel-group, multicentre, randomised, controlled 5-year feeding trial aimed at assessing the effects …
Assessing the Impact of Temporary Retail Price Discounts Intervals Using SVM Semiparametric Regression
2009
Although the marketing literature has found that temporary retail price discounts cause a significant sales increase, little is known about the specific characteristics of deals that influence the magnitude of the sales spike. In this paper, we analyse the impact of the length of temporary retail price discounts periods on the sales increase using scanner-store daily-sales data for two frequently purchased product categories: ground coffee (a storable category) and yogurt (a perishable category).Wedevelop a robust semiparametric regression model based on support vector statistical theory with several previously proposed predictors along with a daily time description. This model also makes i…
Coffee grounds as filler for pectin: Green composites with competitive performances dependent on the UV irradiation.
2017
Novel composite bioplastics were successfully prepared by filling pectin matrix with treated coffee grounds. The amount of coffee dispersed into the pectin was changed within a wide filler range. The morphology of the pectin/coffee hybrid films was studied by microscopic techniques in order to investigate their mesoscopic structure as well as the sizes distribution of the particles dispersed into the matrix. The micrographs showed that the coffee grounds are uniformly dispersed within the polymeric matrix. The morphological characteristics of the biocomposite films were correlated to their properties, such as wettability, water uptake, thermal behavior and mechanical performances. Dynamic m…
The association between coffee and caffeine consumption and renal function: insight from individual-level data, Mendelian randomization, and meta-ana…
2022
IntroductionBy applying on two-sample Mendelian randomization and systematic review and meta-analysis we investigated the association between caffeine and coffee intake with prevalent CKD and markers of renal function.Material and methodsFor the individual data analysis we analysed the NHANES data on renal function markers and caffeine intake. MR was implemented by using summary-level data from the largest ever GWAS conducted on coffee intake (N=91,462) and kidney function.ResultsFinally, we included the data of 18,436 participants, 6.9% had prevalent CKD (based on eGFR). Caffeine intake for general population was 131.1±1.1 mg. The percentage of participants with CKD, by caffeine quartile w…
Fumo, caffè e rischio di Sclerosi Multipla: uno studio caso-controllo
2007
A lot of studies support hypothesis that Multiple Sclerosis (MS) rises from interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors, not yet identified. As regards environmental factors, we investigated association between disease and exposure to smoking and coffee, wether in incidence or in progression of disease. We led a study by a case-control scheme 1:1, where comparison was between a MS patient and an healthy subject. MS patients (cases) were recognized among people attended in MS Ambulatory at the Neurosciences Department of University Hospital of Palermo. Healthy subjects (controls) were recognized by an epidemiological survey leaded on territory. Cases and controls wer…
Analysis of mycotoxins in coffee and risk assessment in Spanish adolescents and adults.
2015
Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by fungal secondary metabolism that cause toxicological effects. Coffee is a highly popular beverage that is susceptible to contamination by mycotoxigenic fungi. The aim of the present study was to determine the presence of the following 21 mycotoxins in coffee using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS-IT): aflatoxin B1, B2, G1 and G2; ochratoxin A; nivalenol; deoxynivalenol; 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol; 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol; diacetoxyscirpenol; neosolaniol; T-2 and HT-2 toxin; sterigmatocystin; enniatin A, A1, B, and B1; beauvericin; and fumonisin B1 and B2. We aimed to determine differences by coffee process (coffee maker, electri…
