Exploring the work in the blogosphere: the paradox of collaborative learning
2016
Educating reflective Enterprise Systems practitioners: a design research study of the iterative building of a teaching framework
2013
This research paper reports on the iterative design of a teaching framework developed for teaching Enterprise Systems ES classes for Information Systems IS graduates. These systems embed technical complexity and create organizational challenges when implemented in organizations. Therefore, teaching good ES classes is pedagogically challenging for faculty, and ES curricula are difficult for students. We have gradually designed and rebuilt curricula and teaching frameworks over 8years. This has also resulted in a set of eight design principles. We report from our design and evaluation process and present our final artefact, the teaching framework. The aim is to educate reflective practitioner…
Developing a formative assessment system for mathematics using mobile technology: A student centred approach
2012
The success of mobile technology for learning tools depends not only on the technical design aspects but also on pedagogical issues. Students' involvement in designing the tools is one of the key factors for their engagement in technology supported learning. Students should be actively involved in developing innovative solutions which are likely to improve their skills as well as their performance. In this study work, the students participated in iterative design processes of a mobile tablet based peer-to-peer assessment system (P2PASS) for mathematics, and in real life deployment on a mathematics course. The paper reports on two major concepts: the user centred design in practice and the p…
Wiki-mediated Collaborative Writing in Teacher Education - Assessing Three Years of Experiences and Influencing Factors
2014
Wikis have been reported as tools that promote collaborative writing in educational settings. Examples of wikis in teacher education are group projects, glossary creation, teacher evaluation, and document review. However, in spite of studies that report on successful stories, the claim that wikis support collaborative writing has not yet been firmly confirmed. Most studies are limited to participantsâ subjective perceptions, and do not take into account influencing factors, or the relationships between wikis and the learning environment. In this paper, studentsâ collaborative writing activities over a period of three years are investigated using a taxonomy of action categories and the w…
Wiki as a collaborative writing tool in teacher education: Evaluation and suggestions for effective use
2014
The students did not collaborate much by revising each other's contributions to the wikis. The students did not use the discussion page to address critical reflections on collaboration.Factors influencing wiki-based collaborative writing in teacher education are discussed.Suggestions for effective use of wikis as collaborative writing tools are presented. Wiki technology provides new opportunities to foster collaborative writing in teacher education. To empirically evaluate the level of collaborative writing in a wiki-based environment, this article used three methods and their combination. The first method was the history function that records all students' actions, enabling to trace all ch…
Using Wikis to Evaluate Students’ Contributions to Collaborative Writing in Teacher Education
2015
Wikis as collaboration tools may serve various purposes in teacher education such as group project, glossary creation, teacher evaluation, and document review. However, despite their potentialities for collaboration, it is still difficult to determine the extent to which students contribute to collaborative writing. Research studies are mostly perception-based and limited to participants’ subjective views. Recently, a growing number of research studies have used the data log of the wiki that enables the retrieval of students’ contributions to collaborative writing. The data log is inherently more reliable than participants’ subjective perceptions to explore collaborative writing activities …
Secondary school students’ collaboration during dyadic debates face-to-face and through computer chat
2009
Communicative competence needed in today's constructive learning environments both in virtual and physical classrooms requires most of all critical and argumentative thinking skills as well as abilities to use reciprocal and collaborative language. This study clarifies the quality of secondary school students' collaboration in dyadic face-to-face and computer chat debates during argumentative discussions. The speech acts produced in 24 debates were first classified into either on-task or off-task categories. The on-task speech acts were then further classified into six collaborative and two non-collaborative categories. The students commonly presented questions and made requests for clarifi…
A wiki task for first-year university students : the effect of scripting students' collaboration
2015
Abstract This study investigates the effect of a collaboration script - i.e. a set of instructions to improve collaboration between learning partners - for a wiki task. Participants were first-year university students in Educational Sciences ( N = 186) collaborating in groups of five during a three-week period to create a wiki on peer assessment in education. Two conditions were contrasted: a scripted and a non-scripted condition. The effect of scripting was measured in four ways (questionnaires, log-file analyses, group product scores, and individual pre–post-test scores). Results show significant positive effects of scripting with respect to the collaborative group processes and students…
Learning to collaborate: Designing collaboration in a 3-D game environment
2006
To respond to learning needs, Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) must provide instructional support. The particular focus of this paper is on designing collaboration in a 3-D virtual game environment intended to make learning more effective by promoting student opportunities for interaction. The empirical experiment eScape, which encourages learners to solve problems collaboratively, is also presented. eScape is a design experiment, comprising both the process of designing a collaborative game environment and an empirical study where data is collected using a variety of methods and analysed, after which the findings and conclusions serve as a basis for further design work. By …
