2021

We observe insult as a linguistic form (Dérive and Dérive 2004; Laforest and Vincent 2004; Lagorgette and Larrivée 2004) within a deliberately heterogeneous, chronologically and genre-wise, corpus of comics and GR. Since this category of literature tends to reproduce a semblance of oral and informal language, our study will also observe insult and swearing as forms of social interaction (Ernotte and Rosier 2004) in the context of all degrees of offense and rudeness expressed in comics and GR from the 1930s to the present; from the weakest (Tintin, Picsou, Almanacco Topolino) to the strongest (De Plomb et de sang by Seif Eddine Nechi; La guerre des tranchées by Jacques Tardi; Peppino Impasta…

Dialettica di riso e pianto in "Leonce und Lena" di Georg Buechner

2023

Leonce and lena by Georg Buechner is a typical example of the mixture of tragic and comic in 19th century drama. A sentimental comedy and merciless political satire at the same time, this play by Buechner has often been interpreted as an example of theatre of estrangement

2018

During a workshop dedicated to adapting academic articles in comic form, the authors teamed up to produce four pages based on an article written by Sebastien Laffage-Cosnier, which was published in Society and Leisure (Volume 38, 2015 – Issue 3) ntitled “The French Snow Class: How the Focus of a School Innovation Changed from Physical Education to Academic Learning (1953–1981)”. The drawings on the following pages are the result of this common work, the process of which is described by the creators. This experience was also an opportunity to further their reflections on the process of academic writing in comics, which, although marginal, is gathering more and more attention from academics a…

Male coloration and species recognition in sympatric flycatchers

1994

Currently favoured views for explaining ornaments in males emphasize female preference such that females benefit from increased offspring production, good genes of the offspring, or the attractiveness of sons. Results from long-term studies in the pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca suggest that factors associated with species recognition may also be important for male coloration. In sympatry the collared flycatcher F. albicollis is dominant in competition for nesting sites over the pied flycatcher. Bright pied flycatcher males resemble collared flycatcher males and suffer from interspecific interference, whereas dull and female-like males can acquire nesting sites close to those of the coll…

Heterospecific female mimicry in Ficedula flycatchers

2014

Mimicry is a widespread phenomenon. Vertebrate visual mimicry often operates in an intraspecific sexual context, with some males resembling conspecific females. Pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) dorsal plumage varies from the ancestral black to female-like brown. Experimental studies have shown that conspecific and heterospecific (collared flycatcher, F. albicollis) individuals of both sexes respond, at least initially, to brown individuals as if they were female. We quantified the perceptual and biochemical differences between brown feathers and found that brown pied flycatcher males are indistinguishable from heterospecific, but not from conspecific, females in both aspects. To our kno…
