Women cross borders: economic migration in contemporary Italian and Polish graphic novels
2014
This article provides a comparative analysis of two European graphic novels of the past decade that focus on the theme of female economic migration, namely Sara Colaone’s Ciao ciao bambina (2010) and Agata Wawryniuk’s Rozmowki polsko-angielskie (2012). By exploring these two distinctive immigrant stories, which depict the Italian migration to Switzerland in the 1950s and the contemporary Polish migration to Britain, respectively, this article illustrates the shifting experiences of mobility in Europe across decades. While the Italian narrative presents the stay abroad as a chance to achieve independence and personal fulfilment, the Polish comic views it as a mere financial opportunity. This…
Sports heroes in graphic narratives

Although formulating a single definition of comics as a medium is an arduous task, many scholars argue that the form depends primarily on sequentiality, i.e., the arrangement of several images to c...
An Unexplained Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation-II in a Child with Neurohepatic Involvement, Hypercholesterolemia and Hypoceruloplasminemia
2017
We report on a 12-year-old adopted boy with psychomotor disability, absence seizures, and normal brain MRI. He showed increased (but initially, at 5 months, normal) serum cholesterol, increased alkaline phosphatases, transiently increased transaminases and hypoceruloplasminemia with normal serum and urinary copper. Blood levels of immunoglobulins, haptoglobin, antithrombin, and factor XI were normal. A type 2 serum transferrin isoelectrofocusing and hypoglycosylation of apoCIII pointed to a combined N- and O-glycosylation defect. Neither CDG panel analysis with 79 CDG-related genes, nor whole exome sequencing revealed the cause of this CDG. Whole genome sequencing was not performed since th…

2017
During the 19th Century and with the first translations of Don Quixote to japanese, Cervantes’ work started to be part of the country’s mass culture. As a manifestation of this phenomenon, the manga absorbed the image of the knight-errant. This comic genre adapted it to its aesthetic criteria and merged it with its history and folklore. At the same time, the manga has been exported to Western world, where readers and artists are familiarized with its characteristical style. Hence, Don Quixote works together with the manga as a bidireccional bridge between Japan and Spain. Far from the novel, the universality of this classic will find its way into the drawing and will take as base the popula…
Sophisticated humor against COVID-19 : the Polish case
2021
Abstract The analysis undertaken in the article focuses on a group of memes selected from the database which drew on culture-specific references. Specifically, they embrace the memories of socialist times and call on references to comic films and easily recognized characters in order to bring out the re-discovered absurdity of the current COVID-19 situation. This material seems ideal to revisit Raskin’s early notion of sophistication, which was broadly argued to derive from intertextuality as well complexity of references that function as sources of humor. In all the examples discussed we can observe the intertextual and metatextual elements, multiple levels and shifts in points of view and…

Multi-omics profiling reveals that eating difficulties developed consecutively to artificial nutrition in the neonatal period are associated to speci…
2015
Prolonged enteral or parenteral nutrition in neonatal periods sometimes results in eating difficulties persisting for years, with reduced food intake through the oral route and thereby reduced stimulation of the oral cavity. Aiming at describing the consequences on oral physiology, saliva of 21 children with eating difficulties (ED) was compared to that of 23 healthy controls, using various omics and targeted methods. Overall, despite heterogeneity within the groups (age, medication etc.), the three spectral methods (MALDI-TOF, SELDI-TOF, (1)H NMR) allowed discriminating ED and controls, confirming that oral stimulation by food intake plays a role in shaping the composition of saliva. Saliv…
