Le Gag
2015
2015
The study begins with an analysis of the reasons why the images of the American version of Murena are censored, with modest veils being thrown upon any instance of nudity while this version rather emphasizes the violence of the graphic novel in its translation and adaptation choices. That paradoxical attitude is discussed in the context of the ambiguities developed in the US culture as regards the representation of nudity being a reminder of the human species’ animal dimension in a society still fraught with puritanical assumptions. Although those ambiguous choices may be ascribed to the publisher’s wish to adapt Murena to the young readers regarded as their main target, they may also repre…
2017
What happens when feminine authors investigate porn-comics and draw themselves in it ? Self-depiction of feminine authors conveys something original in a field where it usually is a way to express a private fantasy. From feminist comics of the 70s to the most recent porn comics, authors’ bodies are not sex objects anymore, they are the subject of a narration. Self-depiction is a new material for porn-comics and gives sincerity to the stories, it may be a way to express political views. Self-fantasy, sex confession or physical metamorphosis are the multiple ways self-depiction provides the feminine author to strengthen her authorship. Implicitly those self-depicted porn-authors draw up an in…
2021
The translation of slang is a thorny issue for any translator. First, we define the object of study, the classic slang and the language of the trenches, to clarify the choice that pushes the authors of comics and graphic novels to privilege this language. We then discuss, on the one hand, the difficulties of translating this lexicon into Italian and, on the other hand, the possible translational strategies to be able to align, as faithfully as possible, with the style of the original text without transforming it; to do this, we have taken into consideration Tardi and Verney’s graphic novel Putain de guerre, Seif Eddine Nechi’s comic De plomb et de sang and Bagères and François’s graphic nov…

El dibujado: volver a la pared
2021
The exhibition El dibujado by Paco Roca (IVAM, 2019) is an exploration of the paradigm shift brought forth by the abandonment of paper and reproducibility as a space for the dissemination of the comic strip. The exhibition hall of a museum (the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno) becomes a space for formal and ephemeral experimentation at different levels, from the purely creative to the pondering about the unexplored possibilities of the language of the comic book. With this exhibition cartoonist Paco Roca poses a challenge to a spectator who is called to leave his/her role as a visitor and become the reader of an experience in which s/he becomes a part of the work’s own narrative. The a…
2016
ABSTRACT The technological advances and the development of the digital image have allowed the latest cinema to approach comic as it never did before. With the new digital tools, filmmakers who didn’t found before the right way to emulate on screen the language of comics, have found new expressing possibilities for the cinematographic image. Thanks to the digital technology, the film frames find meeting points with the comic frames through the acceleration, deceleration and the freezing of the image, among other resources. Qualitative research and content analysis will be used in this essay to study the different ways in which cinema, with the complicity of the latest technological advances,…
Something Borrowed : Interfigural Characterisation in Anglo-American Fantasy Comics
2016
It is no secret that comics’ formal structure resembles a pastiche: images, words and gaps of different styles and abstraction levels mix to tell a story that is more than their sum. Is it any wonder, then, that modern, myth-driven graphic novels tend to borrow their content elements – such as characters – from several heterogeneous sources as well? Wolfgang G. Müller's little-known but widely applicable theory of interfigurality (1991) shows how literary characters gain depth and resonance by sharing elements with characters in other works. The chapter revises his theory and shows how it could also be used in the analysis of comic book characters. Fantasy comics from Vertigo series like Fa…
