Reader Comments Agentive Power in COVID-19 Digital News Articles: Challenging Parascientific Information?
2022
The recent COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an enormous stream of information. Parascientific digital communication has pursued different avenues, from mainstream media news to social networking, at times combined. Likewise, citizens have developed new discourse practices, with readers as active participants who claim authority. Based on a corpus of 500 reader comments from The Guardian, we analyse how readers build their authorial voice on COVID-19 news as well as their agentive power and its implications. Methodologically, we draw upon stance markers, depersonalisation strategies, and heteroglossic markers, from the perspective of discursive interpersonality. Our findings unearth that stan…
The ten grand challenges of synthetic life
2011
The construction of artificial life is one of the main scientific challenges of the Synthetic Biology era. Advances in DNA synthesis and a better understanding of regulatory processes make the goal of constructing the first artificial cell a realistic possibility. This would be both a fundamental scientific milestone and a starting point of a vast range of applications, from biofuel production to drug design. However, several major issues might hamper the objective of achieving an artificial cell. From the bottom-up to the selection-based strategies, this work encompasses the ten grand challenges synthetic biologists will have to be aware of in order to cope with the task of creating life i…
Do Individual Effects Reflect Quantitative or Qualitative Differences in Cognition?
2021
Rouder and Haaf (2020) posed the important question if there are some individuals whose behavior is not in accordance with well-established experimental effects and whether these individual differences are quantitative or qualitative in nature. In our commentary, we discuss the distinction between quantitative and qualitative individual differences and between individual and average causal effects and come to the conclusion that this is not a new question, but in fact one that has already been discussed by Gordon W. Allport (1937) and Donald B. Rubin (1974, 1978). Moreover, we critically examine their proposed rule of thumb to collect about 100 trials per experimental condition to reliably …
Newborn infants' auditory system is sensitive to Western music chord categories
2013
Neural encoding of abstract rules in the audition of newborn infants has been recently demonstrated in several studies using event-related potentials (ERPs). In the present study the neural encoding of Western music chords was investigated in newborn infants. Using ERPs, we examined whether the categorizations of major vs. minor and consonance vs. dissonance are present at the level of the change-related mismatch response (MMR). Using an oddball paradigm, root minor, dissonant and inverted major chords were presented in a context of consonant root major chords. The chords were transposed to several different frequency levels, so that the deviant chords did not include a physically deviant f…
Sensory analysis with consumers using Free-Comment : analyses, performances and extensions
2021
Free-Comment (FC) consists in panelists describing the products using their own terms. Despite its benefits, notably the circumvention of limitations inherent to pre-established lists of sensory descriptors, FC remains rarely used because its performances are not well documented and its analyses and range of application remain limited. This thesis aims to overpass these limitations, highlighting the benefits and the potency of FC and thus put it in the spotlight for sensory analysis with consumers. For the pretreatment of FC data, a semi-automatized procedure is proposed. It enables the practitioners to extract an a posteriori list of sensory descriptors with a compromise between minimizing …
Commenting on Historical Writings in Medieval Latin Europe : A Reconnaissance
2015
Modern scholarship seems to undervalue medieval commentaries on historical writings. This article intends to bring this phenomenon to scholars’ attention by providing a preliminary overview of the forms and subjects of such commentaries. It examines various types of evidence including not only a few commentaries proper (Nicolas Trevet’s on Livy and John of Dąbrówka’s on Vincent of Cracow), but also different apparatus consisting of more or less systematic interlinear and marginal glosses and commentary-like additions to vernacular translations, mostly of Italian and French origin. It begins by considering various consultation-related signs and annotations, such as cross-references. Then, it…
“Un atteggiamento irenico”. Su alcune pagine culioliane di Tullio De Mauro
2017
The paper aims to analyze the culiolian background of Minisemantica (henceforth, MS). It is one of the most important theoretical work of Tullio De Mauro. As we will show, MS adopted two distinct but related concepts of the metalinguistic culiolian repertoire: a) the concept of «epilinguistic activity»; b) the concept of «enunciative space». The paper is divided into three parts. The first one is devoted to analyze the general architecture of MS. The second part is about the culiolian concepts. Finally, the third one seeks to identify some significant traces of the culiolian linguistics in more recent De Mauro’s works.
