Casual, Colloquial, Commonsensical: A News Values Stylistic Analysis of a Populist Newsfeed

This study explores a mediated variety of right-wing populist discourse in the digital context, given the populists’ inclination to bypass legacy media to connect directly to the citizens to garner political support. It analyzes a sample of the Tea Party’s newsfeed headlines posted in the spring of 2019. A corpus of 308 headlines collected according to a “constructed week” formula has been coded first according to selected news values parameters (Bednarek and Caple 2017), and then with respect to stylistic devices operationalized in terms of “casual,” “colloquial” and “commonsensical” expressions. Comparison of Road Safety Policy Objectives in Poland and in the European Union

The aim of the chapter is to identify main actions undertaken within the Polish road safety policy and to assess its efficacy based on the system approach, as well as to present recommendations for enhancing road safety in Poland. In the first part of the chapter key objectives of the EU road safety policy are elaborated. Then, the situation in Poland related to the number of road fatalities and to the causes of accidents is described, and policy instruments in Poland are presented. The aim of this research is to find a solution for the standardization of road signs in the EU zone by a comparative analysis of different national sign systems to establish a common set from a single country. Implementation science has been developed to help understand why evidence-based practices are not adopted as rapidly as they might. We describe here the process a rehabilitation center in Paraguay is undergoing to transform itself into a state-of-the-art early intervention program. We describe the organization and its contextual strengths and barriers, the model it chose to implement, and the implementation procedures it has attempted. Uusitalo and Takala address the food waste problem as a societal phenomenon and examine ethical virtues, values linked to them and food practices in two different time periods: agrarian society (1885–1917) and mature consumer society (2008–2017), in Finland. They use data from newspapers to uncover how ethical principles can underpin understanding of the food waste phenomenon. The study shows how the virtues adopted by food chain actors guide their practices towards sustainable ways of handling excess food.
