Power allocation for two-cell two-user joint transmission
2012
In this paper, we develop a power allocation scheme for the downlink of a two-cell two-user joint transmission system. The objective is to maximize the sum rate under per-cell power constraints. We study a worst case scenario where the carrier phases between the two base stations are un-synchronized, so that joint transmission must be performed without precoding. The derived power allocation scheme is remarkably simple, i.e., each cell transmits with full power to only one user. Note that joint transmission is still possible, when two cells select the same user for data transmission. Moreover, we prove that, in this scenario, the joint transmission case happens with higher probability when …
Virtual PhD courses – A new mode of PhD education?
2012
Published version of an article from the proceedings of the NOKOBIT conference. Also available from Tapir:http://www.tapironline.no/fil/vis/1029 This paper presents experiences from a joint virtual PhD course for doctoral students at a Norwegian and a US university. Based on an experiential learning approach, the course focused on practices for virtual research collaboration. Through six synchronous online sessions, interspersed with interaction in sub-teams, the participants worked on developing a joint conference publication. This gave the PhD students first-hand experience with working in a virtual research team. Based on our analysis of the experiences from the course, we discuss challe…
Modeling a teacher in a tutorial-like system using Learning Automata
2012
Published version of a chapter in the book: Transactions on Computational Collective Intelligence VIII. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-34645-3_2 The goal of this paper is to present a novel approach to model the behavior of a Teacher in a Tutorial- like system. In this model, the Teacher is capable of presenting teaching material from a Socratic-type Domain model via multiple-choice questions. Since this knowledge is stored in the Domain model in chapters with different levels of complexity, the Teacher is able to present learning material of varying degrees of difficulty to the Students. In our model, we propose that the Teacher will be able to as…
A Research Review on Building Information Modeling in Construction―An Area Ripe for IS Research
2012
Published version of article of an article in the journal: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. Also available from the publisher : http://http://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/vol31/iss1/10/ This article presents a review of the research on Building Information Modeling (BIM) in construction, with the aim of identifying areas in this domain where IS research can contribute. The concept of BIM comprises an infrastructure of IT tools supporting collaborative and integrated design, assembly, and operation of buildings. This integrated construction approach, with all stakeholders editing or retrieving information from commonly shared models, requires major changes to well-establis…
Improving data quality in construction engineering projects : an action design research approach
2014
Aurthor's version of an article in the journal: Journal of Management in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0000202 The topic of data and information quality (DQ/IQ) is a longstanding issue of interest in both academia and practice in the construction engineering field. Poor DQ/IQ has led to poor engineering drawings that, in turn, have led to delays and, eventually, cost overruns. In this paper, a study is reported that took an action design research (ADR) approach to develop and evaluate a DQ/IQ assessment tool, which is called the information quality system (IQS), in a large global engineering and construction company. The eval…
Influences of culture, geography and infrastructure on website localization decisions
2012
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the role played by culture, geography and infrastructure on European airline's decision to launch market‐specific websites.Design/methodology/approachLogistic regression analysis based on 440 observations of home‐target country dyads collected from websites of nine European airlines, and supplemented by additional sources of macro level indicators. The unit of analysis is the country dyad.FindingsCultural distance between home and target country, geographical distance between home and target country, website traffic volumes originating from target country, demand conditions in target country, and competition intensity in target country all infl…
Dialectics and contradictions in public procurement of information systems
2014
Published version of a chapter from the book M. Janssen, H. Scholl, M. Wimmer & F. Bannister (Eds.), Electronic Government : Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2014. Also available on SpringerLink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-662-44426-9_24 Public procurement of Information Systems is a highly complex process. Not surprisingly, systems often fail to meet the needs for which they were procured. One of the main causes of this is the contradictions between goals of different stakeholders. Identifying and understanding these conflicts and contradictions are essential to develop strategies to improve the procurement process. In this paper, we present a case study where we examined the procurement p…
Experiences from global e-collaboration: Contextual influences on technology adoption and use
2005
The article presents a cross-case comparison of experiences from organizational adoption and use of e-collaboration technologies in two large global companies. Challenges in the global implementation process were found to increase with the organizational and geographical scope of the implementation, level of autonomy in the adoption process, cultural diversity, technological heterogeneity, and level of work process support embedded in the system. Alignment with existing collaborative work practices resulted in faster adoption of the technological solution. Highly competitive conditions restricted the resources available for training and experience transfer between projects. Clients’ prefere…
Experimental investigation on PLC signal crossing of power transformers
2014
In this work the use of PLC in MV-LV networks is investigated, by means of experimental tests in the case of a two-ways MV/LV communication between two secondary substations. The two substations are connected by a MV overhead power line. Moreover each substation has a by-pass connection at MV bus-bars and a MV/LV power transformer. A ST7580 transceiver is used to inject the communication signal. The transceiver is embedded in a new interface device developed by the authors. In the paper the communication issues are introduced and some experimental tests are presented and discussed. Such tests have been carried out in the presence of voltage net, i.e. 24 kV, with the aim to verify the possib…
