Neighborhood resources associated with active travel in older adults: A cohort study in six European Countries

2020

Objectives: To study associations between perceived neighborhood resources and time spent by older adults in active travel. Methods: Respondents in six European countries, aged 65–85 years, reported on the perceived presence of neighborhood resources (parks, places to sit, public transportation, and facilities) with response options “a lot,” “some,” and “not at all.” Daily active travel time (total minutes of transport-related walking and cycling) was self-reported at the baseline (n = 2,695) and 12–18 months later (n = 2,189). Results: Reporting a lot of any of the separate resources (range B’s = 0.19–0.29) and some or a lot for all four resources (B = 0.22, 95% confidence interval [0.09, …

Preliminary results for application of culture-independent molecular methods to olive brines bacterial communities.

2006

Transformation of green table olives requires a brining stage during which olives ferment. In naturally transformed olives, both flavour improvement and debittering are associated to fermentation. Because of brine features, naturally occurring bacteria and yeasts are progressively selected by the high salt concentration, low pH and phenolic compounds with antimicrobial activity. The establishment of an adequate fermenting microflora is essential to obtain a good and safe product; then, during transformation, control of chemical and microbiological parameters is crucial. Currently, microflora is periodically monitored by plate-counting of main groups. These routine analyses, however, don’t s…

Un passo avanti e un passo indietro nell’Antropocene: Rights for Ecosystem Services, comunità locali e REDD

2019

L’autrice del libro When Rights Embrace Responsibilities. The author of the book When Rights Embrace Responsibilities. Biocultural Rights and Conservation of the Environment replies to the comments raised by Francesco Viola and Gianfrancesco Zanetti in the present journal issue. She also dwells on some topics of her book …

Unraveling biotic interactions determining soil microbial community assembly and functioning

2019

National audience; Microbial communities are at the heart of all ecosystems and yet, a sound understanding of the ecological processes governing the assembly of these communities in the environment is missing. To address the role of biotic interactions in assembly and functioning of the soil microbiota, we used a top down manipulation approach based on the removal of various populations in a natural microbial community. Suspensions of the soil microbiota were subjected to various biocidal and filtration treatments before being inoculated into the same sterilized soil. We hypothesized that if biotic interactions are an important shaping force of the microbiota assembly, removal of microbial …

Gir boplikt lavere boligpriser?

2020

Branding as a lever for resilient transformation

2020

The branding impulse can catalyse tourism and community’s resilience promoting the reactivation of small towns through targeted transformations of built heritage and unused building stock, social innovation initiatives, and new forms of production. It can create a more adaptive process and opportunities for networks of small villages in inner areas where tourism can merge with different work/life models. The B4R work in Sicani hills in Sicily offers a framework for the region’s development and manages to describe a path for activate “reserves of resilience” for new sustainable lifestyles. The settlement development options that the study displays can be used as a model for similar considera…

Have information technologies forgotten pedestrians?

2018

Worldwide, pedestrians make up close to half of all motor-vehicle related fatalities but disproportionally little of the research in Information Technologies (IT) in general and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in particular has aimed at pedestrian safety improvements. This paper analyses and compiles three different ways so that IT and ITS can be used in order to improve mobility and safety of pedestrians in urban spaces: (a) for contacting and/or being localized, (b) for guidance (leading/navigating), (c) for alerting or informing of a danger. The aim is to categorize recent experiences where ITS can improve pedestrians’ mobility and safety so that new ideas based on ITS will be d…

From the Blogosphere into Real Politics: The Use of ICT by the Five Star Movement

2014

Research on ICT and the public discourse often focuses on how ICT can be used to increase citizen participation in political decision-making processes. The Italian Five Star Movement (5SM) represents a novel approach to using ICT to include citizens, and a big challenge for the traditional political actors. The 5SM was initiated outside the established political systems, with the use of Internet tools as cornerstones to promote political actions based on the directly expressed will of citizens. In this paper, based on an exploratory case study approach and informed by the introduction of E-Democracy models, we investigate the role of ICT in various phases of the 5SM, from its birth through …
