Rigidity of commutators and elementary operators on Calkin algebras

1998

LetA=(A 1,...,A n ),B=(B 1,...,B n )eL(l p ) n be arbitraryn-tuples of bounded linear operators on (l p ), with 1<p<∞. The paper establishes strong rigidity properties of the corresponding elementary operators e a,b on the Calkin algebraC(l p )≡L(l p )/K(l p ); $$\varepsilon _{\alpha ,b} (s) = \sum\limits_{i = 1}^n {a_i sb_i } $$ , where quotient elements are denoted bys=S+K(l p ) forSeL(l p ). It is shown among other results that the kernel Ker(e a,b ) is a non-separable subspace ofC(l p ) whenever e a,b fails to be one-one, while the quotient $$C(\ell ^p )/\overline {\operatorname{Im} \left( {\varepsilon _{\alpha ,b} } \right)} $$ is non-separable whenever e a,b fails to be onto. These re…

Toward a quasi-Möbius characterization of invertible homogeneous metric spaces

2020

We study locally compact metric spaces that enjoy various forms of homogeneity with respect to Mobius self-homeomorphisms. We investigate connections between such homogeneity and the combination of isometric homogeneity with invertibility. In particular, we provide a new characterization of snowflakes of boundaries of rank-one symmetric spaces of non-compact type among locally compact and connected metric spaces. Furthermore, we investigate the metric implications of homogeneity with respect to uniformly strongly quasi-Mobius self-homeomorphisms, connecting such homogeneity with the combination of uniform bi-Lipschitz homogeneity and quasi-invertibility. In this context we characterize spac…

The volume of geodesic balls and tubes about totally geodesic submanifolds in compact symmetric spaces

1997

AbstractLet M be a compact Riemannian symmetric space. We give an analytical expression for the area and volume functions of geodesic balls in M and for the area and volume functions of tubes around some totally geodesic submanifolds P of M. We plot the graphs of these functions for some compact irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank two.

On $p$-Dunford integrable functions with values in Banach spaces

2018

[EN] Let (Omega, Sigma, mu) be a complete probability space, X a Banach space and 1 X. Special attention is paid to the compactness of the Dunford operator of f. We also study the p-Bochner integrability of the composition u o f: Omega->Y , where u is a p-summing operator from X to another Banach space Y . Finally, we also provide some tests of p-Dunford integrability by using w*-thick subsets of X¿.

Some remarks on nonsmooth critical point theory

2006

A general min-max principle established by Ghoussoub is extended to the case of functionals f which are the sum of a locally Lipschitz continuous term and of a convex, proper, lower semicontinuous function, when f satisfies a compactness condition weaker than the Palais-Smale one, i.e., the so-called Cerami condition. Moreover, an application to a class of elliptic variational-hemivariational inequalities in the resonant case is presented. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2007.

Near abelian profinite groups

2012

Abstract A compact p-group G (p prime) is called near abelian if it contains an abelian normal subgroup A such that G/A has a dense cyclic subgroup and that every closed subgroup of A is normal in G. We relate near abelian groups to a class of compact groups, which are rich in permuting subgroups. A compact group is called quasihamiltonian (or modular) if every pair of compact subgroups commutes setwise. We show that for p ≠ 2 a compact p-group G is near abelian if and only if it is quasihamiltonian. The case p = 2 is discussed separately.

Locally compact groups which are just not compact

2010

A Just-Non-Compact group, or briefly a JNC group, is a Hausdorff topological group which is not a compact group but all of whose proper Hausdorff quotients are compact groups. Intuitively, it is clear that these groups are rich in compact quotients. Locally compact JNC groups are largely described in the present paper.

Analysis of geometric operators on open manifolds: A groupoid approach

2001

The first five sections of this paper are a survey of algebras of pseudodifferential operators on groupoids. We thus review differentiable groupoids, the definition of pseudodifferential operators on groupoids, and some of their properties. We use then this background material to establish a few new results on these algebras, results that are useful for the analysis of geometric operators on non-compact manifolds and singular spaces. The first step is to establish that the geometric operators on groupoids are in our algebras. This then leads to criteria for the Fredholmness of geometric operators on suitable non-compact manifolds, as well as to an inductive procedure to study their essentia…

WEAKLY COMPACT HOMOMORPHISMS BETWEEN SMALL ALGEBRAS OF ANALYTIC FUNCTIONS

2001

The weak compactness of the composition operator CΦ(f) = f ○ Φ acting on the uniform algebra of analytic uniformly continuous functions on the unit ball of a Banach space with the approximation property is characterized in terms of Φ. The relationship between weak compactness and compactness of these composition operators and general homomorphisms is also discussed.
